Biography
Origin
Bertram Larvan
Five years ago, he was reading about how pests whether they were animals or insects had been responsible for the loss of millions of dollars across society. This led to Bertram contemplating that if he could devise a way of eliminating them then he could make a fortune. Larvan decided on creating a 'mechanical insect' that would be tasked with eliminating the pest but needed funding for his work. As a result, he approached bank after bank about his invention but he lacked the money to build even a model of his creation. Thus, he had nothing to show the banks who refused to offer money for his work without a working prototype. Thus, Larvan came to see himself and his robotic pest-killer being rejected by society. The constant rejections led to his fiancé Alice Morse breaking off their engagement. This led to Larvan deciding to use his creations to embark on a life of crime. This would see him use his robotic creations to perform thefts that could not be connected to him. Larvan came to establish a basement laboratory that was located on the outskirts of Ivy Town. Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
Personality and attributes
After falling into a life of crime, he came to be a costumed super-criminal where he went by the name of the Bug-Eyed Bandit. (Atom v1 #26)
Looking to make a fortune, he developed a pest-killer but required money to built a working prototype. However, the banks refused to offer him money without a model of his creation. The constant rejections led to him becoming bitter as a result. He embarked on a life of crime to punish society for rejecting him and his creations. (Atom v1 #26)
At one point, he was engaged and had a fiancé named Alice Morse but Bertram's bitterness and fixation on his invention led to him neglecting her where she ultimately broke their relationship off. (Atom v1 #26)
Though their relationship was over, Bertram did not like Alice to be involved with another man. This led to him considering Ray Palmer a rival who had stolen Larvan's girl. (Atom v1 #26)
Powers and abilities
Bertram Larvan was born an ordinary human being with no special inherent powers. Whilst growing up, he showed a talent for invention and robotics but could not delve much into the work as he came from a poor background. (Atom v1 #26)
He was responsible for the creation of a 'mechanical insect' that was controlled by electronic impulses where they were programmed to achieve certain tasks. Initially, he had intended them on being a pest-killer where they were to automatically target and destroy insect, bird or any other animal life that were preying on humans. However, he would later modify them when he decided to become a super-criminal. These machines were built of plastic and steel mesh where they were activated by solar cells whilst being equipped with a score of miniature weapons. Each of these flying insects was said to be a flying arsenal where they carried weapons such as gas, blades and could emit electrical charges. He was able to create a variety of different models of such bugs that included fire-bugs capable of emitting intense heat. They could be instructed to steal items from a person and fly off with them. (Atom v1 #26)
To control his creations, he would sometimes carry on him a small device that would help him direct their actions. (Atom v1 #26)
