History

The Lemurians were an aquatic offshoot of Atlanteans that came to inhabit the underwater city of Lemuria located deep in Earth's oceans. According to their own half-forgotten tales, their people had split off from Atlantis ages ago where they began to dwell beneath the ocean humans knew as the Pacific Ocean. Whilst there, they began building an empire in a place where the waters began to change them where they began to develop more serpentine features. (Sub-Mariner v1 #10)

Around 4,000 years ago, the surface world experienced devastation from the Athens War which was when a small population of biracial hybrids emerged within the undersea kingdoms. This group had long been marginalized where they had come to call for unity and equality during the reconstruction of the underwater cities. In this time, a persuasive voice emerged among one of their kind in a figure known as Natlus. Those who could not be swayed by his oratory skills were soon crushed by the force he was able to wield. Through his mastery of magic, he was able to force himself onto the throne of Atlantis and rule as its king. He came to be the first king of the united Atlantis-Lemurian confederacy where he ruled for nearly a century. In this time, he had attempted to unite the Atlantean and Lemurian peoples in order to make them one people thus making them united instead of a divided race. However, the houses that held sway over both Atlantis and Lemuria rejected his efforts where they worked a slow, long and bitter campaign to return to the old ways. Fearing the progress he heralded, they could not accept the changes planned by King Natlus. Thus, they worked to turn the people against him where fear led to rebellion. Defeated, Natlus was placed in stasis and trapped within the Romanche Trench in a tomb where both Atlantean as well as Lemurian sigils warned against his release. In the aftermath, both underwater people attempted to erase him from history with future kings warning that if Natlus was ever freed then he would seek to conquer the deep sea kingdoms before turning his attention to the surface. Centuries ago, a figure emerged among their people who took the name Lord Naga where he adopted the seven-headed serpent as his symbol with him ruling all of Lemuria as a single empire. Served by his soldiers, he ruled like a tyrant over the Lemurians many of whom resented him. Their one hope that he would eventually die but Naga had the royal alchemists help fashion the Serpent Crown. The power of the helm conferred immortality to Lord Naga and for their reward he had the alchemists that made it slain at their own hands after being compelled to do so by the crown. Thus, the long-lived Lemurians continued to suffer under Naga's relentless rule until many years later when the abuse of power provoked desperation and rebellion among the people. One night, a group of Lemurians snuck into the palace royal and stole the Serpent Crown and hid it in Antarctica where it became lost following a cataclysm. Deprived of his relic, Lord Naga came to dispatch Questers to seek out the helm and return it to him. (Sub-Mariner v1 #10)

In charge of Lemuria, Attuma looked to simply use it as a means to conquering Atlantis itself. However, he felt the Lemurian army would be insufficient for this goal. Instead, he decided to use the Lemurian skill in alchemy to create a weapon for this task. Many Lemurians though were dissatisfied with Attuma's reign and came to oppose him where they formed the Lemurian Rebel Army under Canor. Their spies came to learn that Attuma's chief wizard had created Alkahest that was a universal solvent able to dissolve anything. At the time, the Hulk had been dispatched into the region to deal with the threat of Attuma only to be nearly killed by the warlord. Linking up with the Lemurian Rebel Army, Hulk came to aid them in stopping Attuma's plan which was the genocide of the surface which he would then use to claim rule over the Atlanteans.
