Biography
Umar was a female member of the race of Faltine that were beings of energy that inhabited another dimension. Her genitor was the Faltinian Sinifer who gathered enough energy to birth two offspring that were Umar and her brother Dormammu. The two were unlike others of their kind where they showed an obscene lust for matter in addition to their regular source of nourishment that was energy which they used to create spidery forms for one another. This drew the ire of their parent who to put an an end to the two abominations but together they turned their genitor into dark dead matter. The crime was so horrifying that it was impossible for the minds of the Faltine to conceive and they came to rally together to banish the evil pair from their dimension. Travelling into the lower dimensions, Umar and Dormmamu came to devour anything into their own beings where they eventually made their way into the realm that was the Dark Dimension. (Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme v1 #22)
She later became curious about the life of a mortal and took on the form of a beautiful woman where she approached the young Prince Orini. Umar came to tempt him into an affair where the two spent a night in carnal passion. Afterwards, she found out that she had become pregnant and was repulsed at the concept of giving life. Despite that, she gave birth to a daughter named Clea who was given to Orini to care for where he kept secret from their daughter the identity of her mother. (Doctor Strange v2 #9)
After her brothers seeming death, Umar came to take charge of the Dark Dimension where the supremacy over the Mindless Ones had passed on to her. Umar was able to stop the invasion of the Dark Dimension by the Mindless Ones, and became ruler of the Dark Dimension. (Strange Tales v1 #150)
This sight drove Umar almost to madness, and she traveled to Earth to destroy it in revenge. There, she battled the Ancient One. Strange defeated her by summoning another monster; Zom, forcing her to flee. (Strange Tales v1 #156)
Umar later freed Doctor Strange thus enabling him to defeat Dormammu. (Doctor Strange v1 #173)
Afterwards, Umar attacked Doctor Strange and Clea on Earth, and transported the essence of Dormammu to Earth's core, where he reformed. (Doctor Strange v2 #6) With Orini, Umar defeated Doctor Strange on Dormammu's behalf. (Doctor Strange v2 #7) With Dormammu, Umar battled the Scarlet Witch, Vision, and Agatha Harkness. (Giant-Size Avengers v1 #4) Umar's seduction of Orini resulting in the birth of Clea was then recounted. Umar stole Dormammu's power, using it to battle Doctor Strange and Clea. Umar was defeated when Gaea caused Dormammu's power to return to him. (Doctor Strange v2 #9) Umar later battled Thor in an attempt to disrupt a chess match between Odin and Dormammu. (Thor Annual v1 #9) Umar later intervened in Doctor Strange's battle with a deranged Black Knight. (Doctor Strange v2 #68) She conjured a sea serpent and water elementals to attack Doctor Strange and the Black Knight on Earth. (Doctor Strange v2 #69) Following that point, Umar served as Dormammu's subordinate again where she assisted him in his schemes and helped resurrect him when he fell in battle. While Dormammu was gone, Umar ruled the Dark Dimension until she was overthrown by Clea, who discovered the truth of her parentage during the struggle. (Doctor Strange v2 #72)
Dormammu returned to overthrow Clea leading to her and Doctor Strange escaping the demon where they came to meet Umar. The demoness wanted to kill Doctor Strange when she noticed that her spell was also affecting Clea. Clea revealed that they had been married and that there now was a mystical link between them. Umar stopped her attack and admitted to Clea that she was unable to kill her own daughter. She assisted Strange and Clea in overthrowing Dormammu. Umar tricked her brother by suggesting that they divide the rulership over the Dark Dimension into two parts. Dormammu agreed and Umar banished him to his part which was the domain of the Mindless Ones. Meanwhile, Umar made peace with Strange and Clea and ruled the Dark Dimension with Baron Mordo at her side whilst Clea returned to Earth with Strange. (Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme v1 #24)
According to one account, Umar had been killed by her brother with the Hood learning of this from Satana when he had questions about the demon Dormammu. (Dark Reign: The Hood v1 #3)
She was briefly summoned to Earth by the power of the wishing well when Amadeus Cho accidentally wanted allies for the Hulk to battle monsters in Las Vegas. At the end of the battle, she abducted the Hulk and took him to the Dark Dimension to be her consort. He aided her in pushing back the Mindless Ones allowing her to fortify her kingdom as she took him to be her lover. (Incredible Hulks v1 #633) However, her world came under attack from Tyrannus who controlled the dragon Fin Fang Foom and alongside his lover the Red She-Hulk they ravaged the realm. This led to Umar and Hulk battling the two with the power of the wishing well leading to an eternal battle where the Jade Giant's unleashed the power of the Worldbreaker thus destroying everyone only for them to be restored by the well's magic. This continued until Umar convinced the two gamma-powered beings to return to Earth where she commented that they were a good couple as the pair departed her realm. (Incredible Hulks v1 #635)
Later on, the mystical realms came under attack from the Three Mothers who began attacking the warlords in order to sacrifice magical beings to the Peregrine Child. Umar conspired with Aggamon, Dagoth, and Tiboro to pool their power in Kaecilius. Kaecilius would kill Doctor Strange and destroy the mystical barrier around Earth, and the warlords could flee there and let its heroes battle the threat. (Death of Doctor Strange v1 #4) The extent of the threat saw the warlords abandoning their realms to flee from the danger. By this point, Doctor Strange had been killed meaning that Earth was deprived of protection from the Sorcerer Supreme. The chaos caused by the death of Doctor Strange allowed for the warlords including Umar to set up their strongholds on Earth as they tried to defend themselves from the Three Mothers. (Death of Doctor Strange v1 #2) By this point, she established her stronghold of New Umarria and claiming the title of Queen of Antarctica. (Strange v3 #2)
