Biography

Fin Fang Foom in Strange Tales v1 #89.

Fin Fang Foom was a male member of the dragonic alien shapeshifting Makluan race from the planet 'Kakaranthara that was located in the Greater Magellanic Cloud. The race of dragons quickly learnt to not practice the art of war or risk laying waste to their world. Thus, a peaceful culture came to develop where they founded themselves on science and the arts. Makluan society came to be a tranquil and peaceful one with no hunger or want experienced by their kind. This led to boredom to be experienced by a number Makluans who sought a challenge and entertainment. Observing other worlds, these Makluans that included Fin Fang Foom saw planets in the Milky Way Galaxy where there was war and violence. Excited at this prospect, the disaffected dragons travelled to a primitive violent world that turned out to be Earth. Once there, their ship ended up crashing on the planet thus trapping the 10 Makluans on the surface where they ended up living amongst humanity. (Iron Man v1 #274)

In the 8th century, he briefly awakened only to be returned to his sleep through the application of a special slumber. Over time, he was regarded in Chinese legend where he slumbered in an area known as the Valley of the Sleeping Dragon. This saw guards being placed by his tomb whose duty was to prevent the dragon from awakening again where they came to pass this duty onto their descendants over the years. (Strange Tales v1 #89)

During the mid-1700's, the early Qing Dynasty conducted an operation in the Tianjin Prefecture that was set up at the Valley of the Sleeping Dragon that threatened to awaken Fin Fang Foom. As a result, the Sorcerer Brothers Zheng Yu and Zheng Yi led the Five Weapons Society in stopping them. This led to the group being declared criminals when in reality they were heroes of China looking to stop the dragon from awakening but were unable to prevent Fin Fang Foom from rising leading to a battle with the alien dragon. (Shang-Chi v1 #1)

Beaten by the thunder god, he managed to evade death by falling in the Arctic Circle where he took refuge in order to build his strength over the years. Frozen in the ice, he remained until he was discovered by Dr. Jerry Carpenter from the nearby Polar Station One who believed he had uncovered an unknown species of dinosaur. Digging into the ice, he awoke the dragon with Foom killing the scientist and using his body as a host to help build his strength once again. Once at the base, he moved from Carpenter's body into a new host in the form of Carl Roberts though his former vessel's remains were discovered by the personnel at the base. At this time, Polar Station One had found Bruce Banner in the snow and the brought him to their base where the conditions caused him to turn into the Hulk. It was then that Fin Fang Foom decided to reveal himself leading to a battle with the Green Goliath. In their fight, Foom attempted to convince the Hulk to join him in conquering the Earth but the Jade Giant instead threw the dragon with such strength that he crashed on the Moon whereupon the Makluan made the long journey back to Earth. (Hulk vs. Fin Fang Foom v1 #1)

During the Leviathon invasion of Earth, Fin Fang Foom confronted Kei Kawade alongside Gorgilla, Green Thing, and Zzutak. Fin Fang Foom was the one who told Kei about the recklessness of his monster summoning through drawing. (Monsters Unleashed v1 #1) Fin Fang Foom was later seen falling out of the sky alongside the other monsters. (Monsters Unleashed v2 #2) Fin Fang Foom rallied the other monsters to help fight the Leviathon Tide where Tim Boo Ba told him that they are not fighting on their own volition. Fin Fang Foom and the other monsters teleported away following their victory against the Leviathons. (Monsters Unleashed v2 #3) Kei Kawade teleported Fin Fang Foom to help the Heroes for Hire against the Leviathons in Hell's Kitchen. (Monsters Unleashed v2 #4) When the Leviathon Mother defeats most of the heroes and Goliathons, Fin Fang Foom engages the Leviathon Mother and is swallowed until Kei Kawade arrives with his own monsters. Following the Leviathon Mother's death and the retreating of the other Leviathons, Fin Fang Foom and the other Goliathons confronted Kei. Though Kei thanks them for their help, Fin Fang Foom warns Kei about summoning them again whereupon the dragon and the other Goliathons teleported away. (Monsters Unleashed v2 #5)

In time, Foom grew tired of the constant fighting and his thoughts drifted to the more peaceful life of Kakaranthara but could not return to that life. Despite that, he thought that there was a way of quelling his anger and went to another world in order to nurture a brood of Makluans. Many of the resultants eggs were stillborn but one bore a child though Fin Fang Foom came to believe that the great rage within him could doom the hatchling to a life of violence. Thus, he left the child to foster parents whilst he returned to Earth and once more returned to his vicious ways. This led to him wondering once more if that was his only fate and came to meditate on this matter. Over the course of weeks, he meditated in an attempt to find balance and thought that perhaps through his shapeshifting powers he could maybe find a form that could bring him peace. The act resulted in a splintering of his essence that grew into new dragon that embodied his darker traits of guilt, selfishness and rage whilst his own more peaceful self emerged in a diminutive form that avoided conflict. The darker aspects of his persona sought his destruction forcing Fin Fang Foom to flee as he avoided confrontation with them. To save himself, he snuck into Avengers Mountain in an effort for the Avengers to destroy his darker selves. However, Avengers Mountain was besieged by the other space dragons and it was only Broo who convinced Foom to confront himself and re-absorb these essences back into him. Restored, Fin Fang Foom was ready to attack the Agents of Wakanda until Okoye brought in reinforcements from the Warriors Three. They were prepared to slay the Makluan but Broo convinced them to hold their swords with Foom agreeing to a ceasefire as he departed the scene. (Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda v1 #8)

Notes

  • Fin Fang Foom was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby where he made his first appearance in Strange Tales v1 #89 (October, 1961).
  • In Alter Ego. 3 #104 (2011), Writer-editor Stan Lee's inspiration for the character's name was the title of the 1934 movie version of the long-running British stage musical Chu Chin Chow and said in an interview in 2005:
When I was a kid, I loved going to the movies. When I say a kid, I mean 10, 11, 12 years old. And there was one movie I'd seen. I remember nothing about it except the name. It took place in China, I believe, and the name of the movie was Chu Chin Chow. Now I have no idea what it meant — I don't know if it was somebody's name or a country or a city, but I never forgot that name. Those three words just stuck in my memory: Chu Chin Chow. So when I was looking for the name of a monster, I remember Chu Chin Chow... and that particular meter, that beat, somehow led to Fin Fang Foom."
  • In Hulk vs. Fin Fang Foom v1 #1 (2008), Fin Fang Foom received an entry in the issue where it stated that his real name was unknown and he was affiliated with the Dragon Lords of Kakaranthara.

Alternate Versions

  • In Old Man Quill v1 (2019), an alternate version of Fin Fang Foom was shown to inhabit the universe that was home to Old Man Logan designated as Earth-807128. This was an Earth where the superheroes were massacred by its supervillains who came to rule the planet 55 years later. During this time, Fin Fang Foom was captured by the kingdom of Doctor Doom where a device was placed to control him where he was used in a territory ruled by Taskmaster. Taskmaster used Fin Fang Foom as the final challenger in a gladiatorial match and used to dispose of enemies. He fought the Guardians of the Galaxy where Star-Lord removed the control device on him thus freeing the dragon who turned his rage on his captors before departing to parts unknown.
