Garokk

Half a thousand years ago, he was a lowly sailor on-board the H.M.S. Drake that was bound for passage to the south. During their third month, they hit ice and remained trapped for seven days where they faced being frozen by the cold environment. However, they were hit by an iceberg causing the crew to fall into the waters where he nearly died in the frozen setting only to end up in the warm Savage Land. Nearly driven mad from the experience, he felt forsaken by the creator and wandered the strange jungle he found himself in. He stumbled on a clearing before a giant stone idol where he found a chalice filled seemingly with water. Driven by thirst, he drank the contents but the drink was an offering by the natives to their god Garokk. Chasing him, the man fled the angry tribesmen who wanted to kill him for the sacrilege he had committed leading to him fleeing into the jungle. He was always on the run where he came to learn of the true nature of the Savage Land. (Astonishing Tales v1 #3)

Through means forgotten, he came to find a way out of the Savage Land and returned to his native land in England. Once there, he found that many years had passed and that everyone he knew had grown old and died whilst he remained the same. He came to learn that the contents of the offering to Garokk had transformed him where first it meant he could not die and he later started mutating in an inhuman appearing being with a stone-like skin. (Astonishing Tales v1 #3)

In other media

  • In X-Men, Garokk appeared as a villain in the two part story "Savage Land, Strange Heart". It was revealed that long ago he ruled the Savage Land with his great power until a powerful enemy that was the High Evolutionary defeated him. His foe calmed the raging power of the Savage Land depleting Garokks power who was banished into a rocky prison of a giant stone head leaving powerless. Garokk remained in thus state for many years as he remained trapped and unable to interact. This was until the X-Men battled Mr. Sinister along with his henchmen at the Citadel. In the fight, Storm used her elemental powers with these unwittingly awakening Garokk who was weakened but alive. To increase his powers, he intended to tap into the geothermal powers of the Savage Land with the process turning him into a giant. However, Sauron who sought revenge on Garokk and power for himself decided to tap into the energy. The result was the titanic Garokk and Sauron coming into conflict with one another with the two's devastating attack destroying their new found power. Garokk in the aftermath was returned to his rocky prison form and lamented at how close he was to his victory.
