  • Real World: March 3. The New York Post runs an article on David Rorvik's book In His Image, in which the author claimed to have taken part in the successful creation of a human clone.
  • Real World: May 25. At Northwestern University, a bomb explodes in the security section of campus, injuring one guard. This is the first known attack by the Unabomber.
  • Real World: July 25. Louise Brown, the first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization, is born.
  • Real World: August 7. U.S. President Jimmy Carter declares a federal emergency at the contaminated Love Canal neighborhood of Niagara Falls, New York.
  • Real World: September 17. The Camp David Accords are signed by Anwar Sadat, President of Egypt, and Menachem Begin, Prime Minister of Israel, at Camp David, Maryland.
  • Real World: November 18. Jim Jones, leader of the People's Temple cult, leads his followers in a mass-suicide at their compound in Jonestown, Guyana. More than 900 people (including more than 200 children) die, including Jones himself.
