Biography
Abathur was an organism that was created by the Overmind during the departure of the Zerg from their homeworld of Zerus. The hive-minded race sought out to assimilate other forms of life and incorporate it within the Swarm in order to achieve perfection. To aid in this process, the Overmind used genetic sequences from various races that were assimilated in order to spin an organism to improve the Zerg’s evolution. There would be no other creature like it as it would be a brood of one leading to the emergence of Abathur.
After the capture of Sarah Kerrigan, the Overmind sensed within the Terran the potential to become its greatest creation. Thus, she was given over to Abathur who had her go through a painful transformation into becoming one of the Zerg.
Abathur was a unique Zerg creature who served as the supreme Evolution Master and genetic librarian for the Zerg Swarm. He was originally spun from the DNA sequences of numerous distinct alien species by the Zerg Overmind, who deliberately left him devoid of a driving ego or the capacity for independent command so he would focus entirely on genetic enhancement. Following the death of the Overmind, Abathur became a feral entity wandering the tunnels of the planet Char until Sarah Kerrigan returned to reclaim her authority over the scattered Broods. Found residing within the evolution pit aboard a massive Zerg Leviathan space vessel, Abathur immediately recognized Kerrigan, though he bluntly analyzed her current physical state as heavily infected with inferior Terran matter compared to her former, more efficient Queen of Blades form. Despite his cold evaluation of her current biology, he eagerly offered his services to examine genetic strands, spin complex DNA sequences, and continuously guide the evolutionary development of the Swarm's combat organisms under her command.
Kerrigan, now following her own agenda, found Abathur aboard a leviathan. To her frustration, Abathur seemed to consider her and the Queen of Blades as separate entities. In Abathur's view, the Queen of Blades had carried ancient zerg qualities, with only minor terran influence. Kerrigan as she was now, was 'infected' with more terran matter. He offered to 'improve' Kerrigan but she refused. She was, however, willing to let Abathur evolve the Swarm. She was suffering from memory loss, and could not recall her background with the creature. Abathur obliged. While Kerrigan was out on missions, Abathur experimented on zerg and searched for worlds where he could derive strains from existing breeds. When readied, he showed these to Kerrigan through demonstrations, and evolved the appropriate strain chosen by her. Kerrigan eventually learnt the truth of what Abathur had done to her after her infestation at Tarsonis. She told him that she'd have killed him if he wasn't vital to her plans. Abathur was puzzled by her anger.
Kerrigan brought her Swarm to the icy moon of Kaldir. Abathur commented that the zerg were suffering due to the moon's extreme cold, with temperatures as low as that of deep space. He explained that apart from the leviathan and Mutalisks, there was no need to have driven the Swarm to adapt to such cold temperatures beforehand. He informed Kerrigan that he would look for local fauna, to assimilate their essence to allow the zerg to better cope with the conditions. He recommended that the Swarm absorb ursadon matriarch essence to achieve this end. In the conflict that resulted against the protoss forces present on the moon, a prisoner was taken at Abathur's request. He wanted to dissect her, even though protoss genetic material was useless to the Swarm. Instead, Kerrigan kept the protoss as a prisoner. In the subsequent battle, Abathur was able to reconstruct the hydralisk. He recommended that Kerrigan's forces retrieve biomass the protoss had stored. The protoss forces on the ground were defeated, but they still had a spaceworthy vessel that they intended to escape to Shakuras. By implanting the prisoner with a parasite and letting the protoss teleport her away, Kerrigan was able to use the parasite to cripple the protoss ship from the inside. Abathur was impressed with Kerrigan's lateral thinking, but did not know the parasite's origins. Kerrigan revealed that she had created it herself, that Abathur wasn't the only one able to spin sequences. Taking in the 'revelation', Abathur continued his work.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Abathur was a colossal, grotesque, and heavily asymmetric extraterrestrial organism who resembled a massive, segmented larval slug. His upper body featured a large, broad head adorned with multiple smaller, lidless yellow eyes and a complex mouth apparatus flanked by twitching, clawed biological mandibles. His long, thick body was protected by an overlapping layer of rigid, dark purple and gray chitinous carapace plates that ran down his back, while his soft underbelly remained exposed to interact with delicate biomatter. Lacking any traditional limbs for bipedal movement, his lower form tapered off into an elongated tail, and several thin, dexterous appendages extended from his front torso to manipulate genetic strands. He spent his time suspended vertically inside the damp, biological chambers of the Leviathan's evolution pit, entirely bare of any clothing, gear, or cybernetic armor, completely exposing his raw, pulsing alien biology to his surroundings. His position within the Swarm led to him being referred to as the Evolution Master.
Powers and abilities
Abathur possessed an unparalleled, super-genius level of biological intellect that enabled him to view all organic tissue as raw potential to be dismantled, woven, and re-engineered. He possessed the absolute capability of genetic manipulation, allowing him to absorb alien biomass, consume flesh, splinter bone, and isolate useful DNA sequences directly inside his own physical form. By weaving and spinning these captured strands, he could rapidly alter the evolutionary trajectory of the Zerg, implementing immediate physical adaptations such as expanding brain matter or increasing muscle density across entire Broods. He displayed a unique form of telepathic resonance that allowed him to project genetic instructions directly into developing Zerg larvae, enabling him to branch existing species into entirely new combat strains on command. Additionally, his massive larval physiology provided him with an immense level of baseline physical durability, a completely non-centralized internal anatomy, and the unique native ability to seamlessly survive inside the hazardous, heavily acidic environments of a Zerg hive organism.
