Overmind (Starcraft)

The Overmind is a video game character who features in Starcraft.

Biography

The Overmind was a hive-mind intelligence created by the ancient Xel'Naga by a faction under the control of renegades led by Amon. They had sought to create beings that represented purity of essence as part of their efforts to corrupt their species Infinite Cycle. Thus, they came upon the planet Zerus that was deemed with savage predators known as the Zerg that had the natural ability to steal essence from other life forms. The creatures were genetically modified to become the Zerg Swarm which required a guiding intelligence to keep it under their control. Thus, a hive mind intelligence was formed that became the Overmind that was given a hidden mandate by Amon to seek out another species known as the Protoss who represented the other half of the Infinite Cycle as beings of purity of form. The Overmind was tasked with assimilating the Protoss in order to merge the two halves of the Xel'Naga's creation. Around this time, the greater force of the Xel'Naga learnt of Amon's experiments and arrived on Zerus to stop their kin. In response, he unleashed the Zerg Swarm with the Overmind dispatching his forces to attack the ships in orbit where many of them were destroyed and the creatures assimilated. It was then that the Overmind learnt of the Protoss and departed Zerus with the Swarm in order to assimilate them.

The original Overmind was destroyed by the Protoss (specifically Tassadar, who crashed his ship Gantrithor into the entity). A second Overmind was nearly formed by surviving Cerebrates on Char, but it was subdued (while still immature) by the UED, using psionic-dampening drugs. However, Kerrigan was able to invade Char and destroy the fledgling Overmind, assuring her rule of the Zerg swarms.
