Abraham Lincoln (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)
From Multiversal Omnipedia
The Abraham Lincoln was a U.S. Navy frigate sent to seek and destroy what the American government thought was a sea monster, but was in reality the submarine Nautilus. Its captain was Commander Farragut. In 1866, the Abraham Lincoln encountered the Nautilus at sea and after Ned Land's harpoon failed to pierce the submarine's hull, the Lincoln fired on it. The Nautilus retaliated by ramming the frigate, damaging its rudder. The impact threw Land overboard as well as French scientist Professor Arronax. His assistant Conseil dived in to save him. With its rudder broken, the Lincoln drifted helplessly on the tide, and floated out of reach of the three stranded men in the water, forcing them to find salvation with the nearby Nautilus instead.
