General Anatol Gogol was the head of the KGB during the Cold War. A fair-minded and compassionate man, Gogol advocated peace with the West, but never missed an opportunity which would give the Russians the upper hand against either the Americans or the British. He eventually retired and was replaced as the head of the KGB by Leonid Pushkin.
