Biography
Anette Birkin (Japanese: アネット・バーキン, Hepburn: Anetto Bākin) was a female human who was born in the modern age on Earth. She was noted to had studied to be a virologist where she started her career at the Umbrella Corporation. This saw her being stationed at their U.S.A.'s Arklay Laboratory, under the head of research, Dr. William Birkin. The two married in the mid-1980s where by 1986 Annette had given birth to their daughter Sherry Birkin. While they were married, Annette felt they had prioritized their research careers over it. By 1998, the relationship between the Birkins and Umbrella HQ began to quickly deteriorate with William's hopes of a promotion to the corporation's head office being unfulfilled. Like his friend Dr. Albert Wesker, he felt the need to leave Umbrella, but could not go without the virus being completed. Annette assisted her husband in his work with the G-Virus, which they conducted together in the underground labs beneath Raccoon City. At the N.E.S.T. laboratory, they both continued research on the G virus and the development of bioweapons with this new virus, including several guinea pigs for such research being the children of the city's orphanage. To ensure all the necessary security so that this new research did not get out of control for both Annette and William , including the antiviral DEVIL, the researcher decided to make a security key for her entire laboratory in the form of a necklace, which would be given as a gift to her daughter Sherry Birkin on her birthday.
The relationship between the researchers and Umbrella continued to deteriorate, causing the corporation itself to attempt to take the research on the G-Virus out of the NEST laboratory. This caused the corporation to determine the suspension of research carried out at the laboratory and cut off funding for said research. Annette stayed with her husband, as they made preparations to sell the virus to the U.S. military in exchange for protection. With Umbrella having spies within the U.S. military, the gamble was quickly uncovered. Further research funding was cut, and the company made demands for the virus to be handed over. During these developments, Annette agreed to an interview with freelance reporter Ben Bertolucci, who told her he was doing a story on Umbrella's new scholarship program. Bertolucci instead interrogated her about N.E.S.T. and Golgotha, alarming her with his information-gathering skills and forcing her to leave.
On the night of 22 September, operators from the Umbrella Security Service infiltrated N.E.S.T. intent on arresting the Birkins and retrieving the virus. While successful in stealing most of the strains, William was shot in the heat-of-the-moment and left to die. Annette arrived quickly to investigate the disturbance, and found him dying with gunshot wounds. Soon after, he infected himself with Golgotha, which mutated his body to recover his injuries, transforming him into a large and powerful G mutant. Finding him mutating, her love for him prevented her from killing him there and then, against her better judgement. William left the lab, continuing to mutate while chasing the USS team. The subsequent battle resulted in several "t" samples being released into the sewers, allowing rats to be infected, which would later contaminate the city's drinking water. Fiercely loyal to her husband's work, Annette held onto one of the few remaining samples of the G-Virus after William became mutated as a result of an attack by the Cleaners.
Despite being a terrible mother who neglected her daughter, she called Sherry shortly after the accident and told her to go to the RPD, where, Annette hoped, she'd be safe.
Annette ended up being one of the only researchers inside the underground labs to avoid becoming infected with the T-Virus, and she did so by staying mobile and avoiding mutants and zombies alike. During one stroll through the sewers Annette encountered, by chance, Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong. She shot Leon, then, holding Ada at gunpoint, told her how William had become mutated, and all about the G-Virus, planning to shoot Ada anyway. But when she moved to do so, Ada reacted quickly and knocked Annette over a railing and into a deep pool of water.
Although Annette survived, she was badly injured. Found by Claire Redfield, she was aghast to learn that Sherry hadn't remained at the police station. She then limped her way back to the underground labs, where she cornered Leon and taunted him by revealing that Ada was not who she claimed to be. When Ada set the facility's self-destruct sequence into action, Annette was crushed beneath falling debris. Again, she survived, and followed Leon to the main shaft of the facility. There, she came upon him and Ada, and shot Ada, presumably killing her before finally collapsing from her own fatal injuries. Moments later, Sherry and Claire arrived, and Annette had one last tearful good-bye with her daughter, apologizing for being such a neglectful mother, before she finally expired.
