History

Automatons (Japanese: 自動人形オートマトン, Hepburn: Ōtomaton) were mystically animated constructs developed as a result of magical Machinart that developed in the world. Magi known as Puppeteers were responsible for the control and actions of these Automatons. Among the finest institutions in the world for the training of Puppeteers was the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart. The school served as host for the Walpurgis Night Festival that served as a proving ground for the Wise Man who was chosen from among its top 100 students.

One particular skilled female Puppeteer by the name of Shoko Karyusai created the Oborofuji type Autmaton's for the Japanese Army's Imperial Guard Divisions. Their creator felt that these were ultimately failures in her eyes as they lacked any beauty. However, their destructive power led to her becoming famous for her crafting skills which in turn led to her achieving a great amount of influence within the military.

In Britain, a company called Divine Works (D-Works) was responsible for creating two lines of Automatons. One was the Garm series built from the prototype Yomi and made through the use of sonic magic circuits whilst the other was the Cherubim series. These were Automatons meant to serve the military with only one production model to be selected. Whilst the Cherubim series was superior, they were more difficult and expensive to produce whilst the Garm were more manageable for a Puppeteer.

Overview

In appearance, Machine Dolls were artificial beings that came in a variety of shapes and forms ranging from human, animal or completely inhuman. These machines came in a variety of forms from humanoid ones to animalistic ones and even more mechanical appearing versions. These range in shapes and sizes depended on the purpose of the Automaton along with the natural of their supernatural abilities. Their powers could range from superhuman strength to controlling water or electricity or breathing fire.

Automatons relied on their Puppeteers magic to survive and when damaged they healed on close proximity to their masters. Typically, Automatons were unable to perform magic if situated far from their master as they could not generate their own magical power. Due to that, it was natural for the Automaton to feel affection for their Puppeteer.

A chief element in the Machinarts was the use of magical circuits that were an alternative to performing a magical ritual. Such circuits were comparative to an engine that could be used to produce a magical effect. The most widely used of the magical circuits was Eve's Heart that was present in all Automatons that was responsible for their animation. These circuits allowed Automatons to function independently and thus were vital giving a doll their intelligence. The heart of an Automaton was their Magic Circuit located in their chest which sustained them and gave them a link to their Puppeteer that gave them life. With it, skilled craftsmen could achieve great work and even create Automatons that were nearly identical to human beings. It was said that Automatons did not die unless one took out their Eve's Heart.

A number of such machines were crafted through flesh that was a forbidden act. Such Automatons were known as Banned Dolls as they broke all the Magical Code of Ethics. This was on account of them being composed of living material such as organs and contained parts of animals or even humans. Banned Dolls were unlike ordinary ones in that they were able to generate some of their own magic even if away from their master.

Automatons were seen as non-living things that were not people. Most Puppeteers treated Automatons as objects rather than as separate entities from their masters. It was said to not be unusual for a Banned Doll to be dismantled once it had outlived its usefulness.
