Biography
The Bajorans were a humanoid species who were the inhabitants of the planet Bajor.
Once a species known for a rich and ancient civilization—boasting architects, artists, and philosophers that flourished while humans were still 'living in caves' until their society had been shattered by the Cardassian annexation of their homeworld. Following this invasion, millions of Bajorans were forced into exile, scattered across the sector in various refugee camps situated on the borders of the Federation. Life in these camps was described as a grueling struggle for survival against starvation and disease, as the Cardassians had stripped their planet of its resources and left its people with nothing. By the time of the Federation's direct involvement in the sector, the Bajoran population had fractured into various groups: some remained in the camps hoping for a peaceful return, while others formed militant resistance factions that launched terrorist strikes against Cardassian targets. This era was marked by a profound sense of loss, as the people struggled to maintain their traditional naming customs and religious identity while living as a stateless race under the constant shadow of their occupiers. Overview
In appearance, Bajorans resembled humans but were distinguished by a series of four to seven horizontal ridges across the bridge of the nose, which in this initial introduction included subtle additional ridges above the inner eyebrows. Culturally, they were identified by a decorative, chained earring worn as a symbol of their heritage and faith; in this first appearance, females were observed wearing the piece on the left ear while males wore it on the right. Their naming customs were notably the reverse of the human standard, with the family name traditionally preceding the given name. Having lived as a displaced people for four decades, many were seen in tattered, drab-coloured rags and functional tunics within refugee camps, though some chose to assimilate by allowing their name order to be distorted or by removing their traditional jewellery to comply with external uniform standards. Bajoran religion centers around the polytheistic worship of beings known to the Bajorans as the Prophets, who are said to have occasionally revealed future events to various individuals via encounters with energy vortex orbs known as Tears of the Prophets.
