Biography

Betty Brant

She had a blonde haired brother by the name of Bennett Brant. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #11) At some point, her mother gave Betty a heart shaped pendant before dying. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #665)

When she was younger, she and her brother came to befriend Gordon Savinski who was a student at Empire State University. At some point, he became involved with Betty but they would eventually break up. Around this time, Savinski came to involve Bennett in gambling where they came to lose and end up owing money to the gangster Blackie Gaxton. After that point, Gordon severed ties with Bennett leaving his former friend deep in debt. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #12)

Her secretarial job at the Bugle was taken to help her brother Bennett Brant pay back his gambling debts. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #11)

Peter had already noticed his attraction to Betty, and was impressed when she stood up to J. Jonah Jameson over publishing slandering articles against Spider-Man. They began dating shortly afterwards, when Betty was impressed by Parker's kindness when taking care of his ill Aunt May. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #9)

With the help of Doctor Octopus, Blackie Gaxton kidnapped both Bennett and Betty as insurance against anyone preventing him leaving the country. Bennett was double-crossed when Gaxton refused to free him of his debts and was fatally shot during a melee between Gaxton's gang, Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man. At first, Betty blamed Spider-Man for the death of her brother and told Spider-Man that she never wanted to see him again, but she realized later on that she was wrong and that he had only been trying to help. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #11) However the blossoming romance between Betty and Peter continued but was cut short, when Betty feared that Peter cared more for his classmate Liz Allan. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #13) This misunderstanding led to their relationship finally coming to an end. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #17) Soon after Peter and Betty's break up she started dating fellow Daily Bugle employee reporter Ned Leeds. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #18)

Upon his return, she and Ned began dating again. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #29) Eventually, Leeds decided to propose to Betty though secretly she still loved Peter. Parker then did his best to alienate her for her own good. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #30)
