Big Man (Janice Foswell)

Main Article: Janice Foswell

Janice Foswell was the daughter of Frederick Foswell where her father had sent her to Europe to receive her education.

The Big Man observed Spider-Man, and thought to herself of how she had waited years for the chance to get revenge on the Wall-Crawler. She was about to shoot at Spider-Man, but was interrupted by a young kid coming to the roof of the building to feed his pigeons. After Spider-Man and the young kid talked for a while, the Big Man decided to shoot anyway. Both Spider-Man and the young kid managed to dodge the bullets, but Big Man escaped before Spider-Man could capture him. Spider-Man learned that the kid’s pigeon had been killed by a bullet. Later, the Human Torch was attacked in his Fantasti-Car by Fancy Dan and Montana of the Enforcers. While fighting the two criminals, the Big Man shot the Human Torch with some kind of gas that extinguished his flame, and the Enforcers managed to knock the non-flaming Human Torch out. The Big Man told the Enforcers that the setting-up of Spider-Man was all going according to the plan. Later at a warehouse, a meeting with lots of random gangsters was taking place; the Big Man was about to hold an auction for the Human Torch, when Spider-Man arrived and freed the Torch, and they began to fight the gangsters. The fighting came to a halt when Sandman and the Crime-Master arrived. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #39)

Big Man (Frederick Foswell, Junior)

Main Article: Frederick Foswell, Junior

Frederick Foswell, Junior was the blonde haired son of Frederick Foswell, Senior and brother to Janice Foswell. After his fathers death, he came to believe the words of J. Jonah Jameson that Spider-Man was ultimately responsible for his fathers death and that his dad was not a criminal. This saw him devote his life to listening to Jameson's words whilst plotting his revenge against Spider-Man. He ultimately decided to act when Jameson began to praise Spider-Man and call him a hero where he believed that Jonah had been blackmailed or brainwashed. Thus, Freddie hired the services of Arcade and developed a giant mechanical suit formed in the appearance of the Big Man whilst he orchestrated a plot to murder Spider-Man. Notes

  • The concept of the Big Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko where it made its first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #10 (March, 1964).

Alternate Versions

  • In Ultimate Spider-Man v1 #9 (2001), an alternate version of the character appeared in the setting of the Ultimate Marvel reality that was designated as Earth-1610 in the Multiverse. Frederick Foswell operated as the notorious Mr. Big was a mobster and the head of Wilson Fisk's Enforcers. He wore a business suit and a fedora hat which overshadowed his eyes. Foswell was scheming to overthrow Fisk, who he believed was not a true mobster as he did not want his "hand's dirty". Instead, he felt that Fisk decided to simply use Spider-Man as his secret weapon. The plan backfired and Fisk learned that Foswell was the one responsible for Spider-Man's assault on his office.
