History

Bubblegum Crisis

Boomers were a series of robots that were created by the Genom Corporation.

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040

Boomers were a type of synthetic life-form mass-produced by the Genom Corporation where they were advertised as being 'friends of humanity'. Genom later headlined the Boomer Project where among the scientists assigned to it being Dr. Katsuhito Stingray, Nigel Kirkland and Brian J. Mason. During the project, Galatea was created by Dr. Stingray from an 'anti-seed' implanted within his daughter’s hypothalamus. He would then harvest the resulting cell growth and create a humanoid form for it, one that was almost identical to Sylia. Dr. Stingray came to refer to his creation as the Sotai. After Galatea was created, Macky came next, and the boomers came after them. She saw them as her 'maimed' and deformed 'children', as that they possessed a small spark of her life force. Galatea would then go rogue, using her powers to kill those who had created her. To stop her from escaping the lab, an artificial earthquake device was detonated, trapping her. She would then spend the next six and a half years 'hibernating' in her containment chamber.

Overview

In appearance, Boomers came in many shapes and sizes, dependent on the jobs for which they are required. Born of the fusion of mechatronics and biotechnology, cyberdroids were hailed as a new servitor race which would liberate mankind. Commonly referred to as "Boomers", these artificial life forms ranged from simple robots to the most advanced androids, and some were even reported to have their own personalities. Although originally created to aid in the development of outer space, labor Boomers were soon marketed domestically.

Produced mainly by the Genom Corporation, Boomers serve as maids, waiters, bodyguards, store mannequins, and military weapons. Some, like the Sexaroid model of Boomer, have gained sentience and developed minds of their own, but most are simply machines. Boomers are capable of appearing human, whether male or female, but tend to 'burst' out of their synthetic skin in combat situations, revealing their true selves - giant, metallic killing machines armed with built-in lasers, machine guns, and arm blades capable of cleaving through a fire hydrant. Ultimately, GENOM also designed combat Boomers: terrifying armored monsters bristling with deadly weaponry. Boomers designed for infiltration and combat are capable of appearing human, whether male or female, but tend to "burst" out of their synthetic skin in combat situations, revealing their true selves: giant, metallic killing machines armed with built-in lasers, machine guns, and arm blades capable of cleaving through a fire hydrant. Military Combat Boomers also known as Combat Boomers, were sometimes also referred to as 'light mobile armored combat machines'. Such boomers were generally classified as C-Class Boomers.

Often, a Boomer which is running down or malfunctioning (whether by accident, or planned by the Genom Corporation) loses control of itself, and goes on a murderous rampage. Due to the heavy armour and powerful weapon systems that many Boomers carry or are able to "grow", casualties tend to run high during such incidents. To date, only the AD Police and the armoured vigilantes known as the Knight Sabers have had any luck in stopping these creatures.

In Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, it is inevitable that a Boomer will go rogue due to its very design. Boomers will break free of their programming and gain self awareness, being able to break free of their limited form as well: they had their forms and programming restricted as a way of stopping this, but it failed (revealed in Episode 19). In at least one case (a waitress Boomer in Episode 3), this appears to have occurred due to mistreatment by humans.

Some Boomers in 2040 are remotely controlled by humans rather than operating on their own, such as the Moto Slave series. These were introduced in Episode 7, here, a deep-sea Boomer went rogue after the death of its operator and, driven by his memories and emotions regarding his wife, went to his home in Tokyo. The Knight Sabers' armoured suits are also a form of Boomer, as is the second model of Priss' armoured motorcycle, also called Motoslave (and which showed sentience and communicated to her in the final episode). Episodes 9 and 10 introduced an insectoid monster that hunted and ate Boomers under the streets of Tokyo, which was the results of the early stages of the Boomer project.

In AD Police: To Serve and Protect, they are known as VOOMERS, short for "VOo-doo Organic Metal Extension Resource".

Any person who has had more than seventy percent of their body replaced with mechanical parts was classified as a Boomeroid ("a boomer dangerously close to human") and is treated as such by the law. As part of the Boomer Law, boomeroids are to be handled (often fatally) by the AD Police, as opposed to the normal law enforcement officers of Megatokyo.

Models

  • Galatea : product of the Boomer Project made as progeny of Katsuhito Stingray’s research and experiments. Physically, she was almost identical to Sylia in appearance, but with noticeable differences in carriage and mannerisms.
  • Sylvie : a Sexaroid love-doll model 33-S designed to feed on human blood as if she is a vampire and pilot "D.D.", a heavily armed mecha with a fail-safe mechanism that can be set to self-destruct with a nuclear reactor if the power runs out.
  • Anri :
  • Mackie Stingray : a prototype Boomer that has a more advanced brain modeled after Sylia's own brain functions. This version was present in the 2040 continuity of the character.

Notes

  • Boomers were created by Toshimichi Suzuki where they featured in the setting of the Bubblegum Crisis universe.
