Biography
Pre-Crisis
Bozo was a machine that started life as an unnamed iron robot created by the crazed criminal Dr. Von Thorp. He came to send his mechanical creation who used it to commit a series of violent and destructive crimes in New York City. At one point in his crazy plan, he decided to call the police on himself where he faked his own death then un-faked it, and snuck out of his own house. To end his crime spree, the police decided to call in a private detective named Hugh Hazzard to foil Von Thorp schemes. Commissioner Hunt tried to reach Hazzard by phone all evening but could not get to him. This led to him resorting to his old trick of getting his attention which had never failed before whereby he shot a flare from the roof of police headquarters. Hazzard managed to stow himself away inside the robot, which led him back to Von Thorp's hideout, where he confronted and defeated the mad criminal scientist. Afterwards, Hugh came to learn that it was decided to dump the robot into a watery grave. Hazzard disagreed with this decision and later that night Hugh came to shadow the police boat where he snuck aboard and stole the robot. He proceeded to stow it aboard his own boat all whilst remaining undetected by the police of the town. Hugh decided to give the robot a new life where he named him Bozo who would become his new partner. (Smash Comics v1 #1) In the aftermath, Hugh Hazzard came to install a flying device onto Bozo. They were then called to the police department headquarters with Commissioner about the possession of the stolen robot. In fact, there was serious resistance from the public and police over the idea of Bozo's reactivation over the recent deadly baby-stealing rampage perpetrated by the robot. The argument was interrupted by the report of a kidnapping, of a banker's daughter. Hazzard took on the case, and impersonated Hilton's made-up nephew Percy Douglas, thus makes his way into the kidnap gang's hideout. However, he gets recognized by one of the gangsters forcing Hugh to whip out two automatics, and wounds two of them, but one gangster telephones a warning to his boss. Hazzard came to beats some info out of him thus learning that the boss was flying out from Bush Airport, in his personal biplane. Thus, the only way to catch him was with another flying machine, so Hazzard used Bozo to disrupt the aerial getaway, crashing the plane and bringing in the pilot alive. The capture of the crime boss would not have been possible without Bozo leading to the Commissioner reluctantly agreeing that Hazzard can keep the robot. (Smash Comics v1 #2)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
At some point, Bozo was acquired by a Japanese businessman who operated as a collector of the bizarre aspects of the superhero world that was burgeoning at the time. (Starman v2 #64) By the modern day, the U.S. military had acquired the Iron Man where it came to be in the custody of General Sam Lane's Project 7734 as part of its Project M Archive, Robotics. (Superman v1 #692) Later on, the Construct was accidentally brought back to life following a fight between Cyborg Victor Stone and Red Tornado. He immediately began taking control over every robotic being on the planet and had them rise up against mankind. Among those subsumed by the Construct were Bozo the Iron Man and his 'son' Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard. The Justice League of America came to help combat the machines and stop the damage being perpetrated by the Construct. (Justice League of America v2 #60)
