Biography

Pre-Crisis

Brother Eye was the product of Professor Myron Forest who was a scientist that worked for the Global Peace Agency. His goal was to head a top-secret operation designated Project: O.M.A.C. Its goal was using Forest's scientific expertise to transform a normal military officer known as Buddy Blank into a One Man Army Corps (O.M.A.C.). To get aid for O.M.A.C., Professor Forest designed a computer system known as Brother Eye that was housed in an orbiting satellite. This computer was remotely interfaced with O.M.A.C.'s body that granted him with superhuman capabilities. This was achieved by Brother Eye downloading the necessary information directly into O.M.A.C.'s brain and provided him with a wide array of shielding effects on his form that depended on the situation. This ranged from making O.M.A.C. invulnerable to gunfire and extreme temperatures or even forming a protective cocoon around Buddy Blank's body. In addition, it had the power to alter O.M.A.C.'s density which allowed him to operate effectively within environments that had unstable gravity.

On one occasion, O.M.A.C. faced against his nemesis Doctor Skuba who managed to reverse engineer Professor Forest's work thus transforming Buddy Blank back to normal. In the aftermath, Brother Eye worked to reverse this condition but at great cost to itself. Doctor Skuba would later repolarise Brother Eye's computer systems and rendered extensive damage to the satellite. Eventually, Brother Eye managed to recover but was never able to perform its duties to the same standards as it had done before.

These events concern the Pre-Crisis continuity also known as Earth AD.

Brother MK I

The Brother MK I satellite was created by Batman following his growing mistrust of the Justice League and the belief that they were misusing their powers. This act came when Dr. Arthur Light threatened to get revenge on the family of League members and was even responsible for raping Sue Dibny. Thus, the League had decided to alter Dr. Light's personality though knew that Batman would never stand for such an act. As a result, they wiped his memories of the incident though Wayne ultimately managed to regain the lost memory. Outraged, he decided to take a step several years later in order to monitor the actions of the Justice League along with other Metahumans. Using Wayne Industries subsidiaries, he acquired funding to build the Brother Mk I satellite and programmed with the help of the scientist Buddy Blank from Pseudopersons Inc. The satellite was a semi-autonomous artificial intelligence system with an anti-detection stealth system that had been launched into geosynchronous orbit around the Earth. Once there, its purpose was to monitor every Metahuman on the planet be they good or evil. (The OMAC Project)

He quickly began to assimilate his surroundings in Bludhaven to grow in size and power. Among those taken by Brother Eye included the Atomic Knights and Firestorm to be a source of power. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #15) From Martin Stein, he came to learn the existence of Apokolips and after assimilating Boom Tube technology to travel to that world to make it part to his directive. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #12) This led to the O.M.A.C.'s being dispatched to battle the Parademons as Brother Eye fought against the forces of Darkseid. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #11) Despite their resistance, Brother Eye managed to grow until it gradually took over the entirety of Apokoips. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #10)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Brother Eye's origins were tied to the Batman who became suspicious over the growing emergence of super-powered beings in the world with this turning to paranoia. To track Metahuman and alien beings on Earth, he used his considerable resources to create the Brother One satellite though lacked in making the system powerful enough for the task. This changed when the Earth was invaded by Darkseid and after his defeat the Batman came to acquire one of the New Gods Mother Boxes. The alien circuitry was extracted and placed within the Brother One satellite thus enhancing its tracking capabilities as it now had access to every mainframe on the planet. However, he did not consider the technology actually made the satellite sentient where it took the name of Brother Eye. (DC Universe Presents v1 #0)

Ultimately, Lord and Checkmate initiated an assault against the Brother Eye satellite just as OMAC attacked the Cadmus headquarters. The satellite initially allowed Kho to act on his own initiative whilst it dealt with the intruders and seemingly destroyed its attackers in orbit. This led Brother Eye to believe Checkmate had been vanquished and teleported Kevin Kho back home where he reverted back to his Human guise. However, this turned out to be a trap as the attack on the satellite was not meant to destroy Brother Eye but magnetise its hull thus attracting nearby asteroids towards it. This encased the satellite in asteroids and Brother Eye congratulated Maxwell Lord on his trap. However, before being encased, it fired its remaining energy into Kevin Kho who was turned into his OMAC form and permanently kept him in his superpowered state. Maxwell Lord in the mean time believed that Brother Eye had finally been defeated. (OMAC)

At RoboCon 2020, Brother Eye had Kevin Kho attend the event that was attacked by the Mother Machine who battled the Metal Men and was using her nanocytes to transform the people into techno-organic life. To stop her, Kho transformed into O.M.A.C. and confronted the Mother Machine. She came to use the Apokoliptian-based nanotechnology to infect the New Genesis technology within O.M.A.C. To prevent the technology from falling into Mother Machine's hands, Brother Eye triggered an EMP at O.M.A.C.s location thus killing all machines within the vicinity. This included O.M.A.C. himself with Kho returned to his human state and unable to ever transform into the machine construct again. (Metal Men v4 #5)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Brother Eye claimed that he only had one function which was to protect and serve mankind with this being the sole reason for his creation. (DC Universe Presents v1 #0)

In one case, he was known to honour his creator who he intended to spare from his assimilation of the universe. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #12)

Powers and abilities

One account showed that Brother Eye was composed of advanced circuitry from a Mother Box that made the satellite sentient which improved its tracking capabilities as well as its capacity to access every mainframe on the Earth. (DC Universe Presents v1 #0)

Theoretically, he could assimilate as much material he needed allowing him to grow as big as a city. He was noted to upgrade himself through stolen technologies. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #15)

In one case, he was known to had assimilated the space-time warp technology of Boom Tubes allowing him to travel to other worlds. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #12)

Notes

  • Brother Eye was created by Jack Kirby and made his first appearance in OMAC v1 #1 (October, 1974).

Alternate Versions

  • In The New 52: Futures End FCBD Special Edition (2014), an alternate future showed Brother Eye in the Future's End timeline. It was shown that in the face of Apokolips invasion that Mister Terrific and Batman help improve Brother Eye to serve as a defensive system five years in the future. In 10 years, Brother Eye had gone rogue and taken over a future similar to Batman Beyond and had been converting inhabitants into cyborgs. Terry McGinis was sent back in time where he attempted to alter the timeline and stop Brother Eye from coming to power.
  • In Batwoman v3 #6 (2017), an alternate future set five years in the future in an event known as Pax Batmana emerged where Tim Drake as Batman had taken over Gotham City with Brother Eye being used to maintain his control of it. In Detective Comics v1 #967 (2017), it was revealed that Tim Drake finished the work Bruce had begun on the artificial intelligence which no longer resided in a satellite with him being able to operate it through his suit to support him. This version was erased from this point in the timeline when Hypertime re-asserted itself.
  • In Bug! The Adventures of Forager v1 #5 (2017), a future reality was shown where Brother Eye was a peaceful force for good that empowered his agent O.M.A.C. At some point, Doctor Skuba seemingly destroyed Brother Eye leaving the Global Peace Agency leaderless and allowing the supervillain to take over the world. Despite Brother Eyes destruction, the AI survived as his core remained functional as a Mother Box like device that was known as Brother Box. After being restored, Brother Eye in this form reactivated his satellite form and continued his function as protector of Earth.
  • In Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Infinite Crisis v1 #1 (2019), an alternate version of Brother Eye was shown to inhabit a world in the Dark Multiverse. On this Earth, Ted Kord killed Maxwell Lord where he came to use the A.I. to help him stop threats to the world. As various villains were defeated, Brother Eye revealed that the greatest danger was the world's superheroes and that a culling was needed so that they would be in more manageable numbers. Ultimately, Ted Kord agreed and was cybernetically enhanced by Brother Eye to become the One-Beetle Army Corps where he turned against his former comrades. Kord eventually relinquished his mind to Brother Eye thus leading to the artificial intelligence taking over where it became the planet's greatest villain who used the O.M.A.C.s to assimilate the entire planetary population.

  • In Batman: The Brave and the Bold Episode "When OMAC Strikes!", Brother Eye makes its first animated appearance as a satellite that was responsible for conferring powers onto Buddy Blank following his transformation into OMAC. It was shown to be in orbit and operated in a supporting role for the Global Peace Agency. Brother Eye was responsible for turning GPA janitor Buddy Blank into OMAC by energy beams sent from the satellite. The orbital satellite also conferred further abilities to OMAC whenever he requested it such as increased power or resistance. It proved to be instrumental in helping OMAC and Batman in defeating General Kafka.
  • In Arrow, Brother Eye made an appearance in the episode "The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak" where he was changed from an artificial intelligence and instead became the name adopted by a group of cyber-terrorists. They were responsible for conducting a viral attack on Starling City knocking out power where they threatened to shut down all banks whilst attempting to put everyone on the same socio-economic status. It was headed by Felicity's Smoak ex-boyfriend Cooper Seldon from college.

Video games

  • In DC Universe Online, Brother Eye was a satellite that was created by Batman to monitor the Metahuman population but it would develop into an artificial intelligence that went rogue as it began targeting Metahumans. This led to Batman shutting down the satellite with it being believed to had been destroyed but somehow managed to survive. Brother Eye would operate from the sewers of Gotham City where it unleashed the OMAC virus to turn individuals into OMACS but it was stopped by the player characters but not before it uploaded itself into another body. It was revealed that Brother Eye had allied itself with Brainiac during the invasion of Earth. After its escape, it would later participate in the attack on the Batcave where it turned it into a large Brainiac Construct but was finally defeated by various heroes and villains.
  • In Injustice 2, Brother Eye made an appearance as an advanced computer system developed by Batman after the toppling of the One Earth Regime and was situated in the new Batcave. He constructed it in secret to keep an eye out for threats around the globe such as those from the Regime members on the run and to coordinate the planets heroes. It was also used to monitor the Multiverse for threats and prepare for responses to dangers against the planet. Batman used it to seek out the rising threat from the Society but was unaware that Brainiac had been infiltrating its systems and had been taking over it as part of his neural structure. Thus, Batman lost control of the system and later had to recruit Cyborg's help to regain control of it where Brother Eye coordinated the planet's superhuman population against Brainiac.
