History

The Brotherhood of the Shield was a secret society that operated for many years on Earth. Its origins were dated back to the dawn of civilisation in 2620 B.C. when Egypt was invaded by the Brood that crashed on the primitive world. The Queen came to infest the Pharaoh Khasekhemwy Khasekhemui and using him looked to expand until the world fell under their control. During this time, Imhotep emerged here he rallied others behind him to prevent the extinction of the human race and he succeeded in killing the Brood Queen thus saving the world. Since then, the Brotherhood of the Shield was formed with Imhotep's golden shield becoming their symbol. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1)

In 200 B.C., the Greek inventor Archimedes used his intellect to build the Colossus of Rhodes that was a giant mechanical construct where he used to defend Rhodes against a Kree Sentry where he managed to defeat the Kree machine but at the cost of his creation. (S.H.I.E.L.D.: Infinity v1 #1)

An ally of the brotherhood named Zhang Heng managed to convince the Celestial Madonna from implanting her child into the Earth which would be an act that would destroy the planet. Instead, he had the cosmic being use the sun to birth her offspring thus saving the planet. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1)

In 1582 A.D., Galileo constructed a device that was used to fight off the arrival of Galactus. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1)

At some point, the ancient order took custodianship of the Terranometer world machine's global system. Furthermore, an interface was established with this being an artificial intelligence modelled after Nikola Tesla when he was alive. (Red She-Hulk v1 #60)

Whilst in New Guinea, the Red She-Hulk was in the Forbidden Forest when she encountered ruins of a pyramid that had ties to the Brotherhood of the Shield. Upon gaining entry, she unwittingly stumbled on a port to the world computer that informed her that the current optimal receiver was a girl named Eleanor Bennett. With this information, the Red She-Hulk journeyed to that location and met the nine year old child where she gained contact with a vision from the Terranometer that showcased a great coming catastrophe that would spark a human versus superhuman war. This led to Betty Ross moving to try to avert this dark future and prevent it from coming to pass. (Red She-Hulk v1 #61)

The Order of the Shield were responsible for restoring the Abomination as part of a back-up plan in case the Hulk survived the assassination attempt made against Bruce Banner. (Hulk v3 #8)

Overview

In appearance, the Brotherhood of the Shield was a secret society that protected the world from dangers and expanded their knowledge of the universe. They protected humanity from threats known and unknown. Their symbol was the golden shield of Imhotep who founded their order. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1) The Order of the Shield was dedicating to stopping the end of the world and their existence was not widely known to the public. (Hulk v3 #8)

A leadership body within the secret society was the High Council of the Shield. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1) The leader of this group held the title of Grandmaster. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #3)

Originally, there were very strict rules on the recruitment of members into the Brotherhood. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #3)

The secret knowledge of the organization stemmed from the Five-Fold Understanding. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #3) These were; the Greater Science, the Quiet Math, the Silent Truth, the Hidden Arts and the Secret Alchemy. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1)

It was shown that they also used mystical artifacts such as a small statue consecrated to Ikonn that blocked all psychic and remote viewing. (Immortal Hulk v1 #14)

A device utilised by members of the Brotherhood was the Terranometer that was designed millennia before computers were first imagined with the organization maintaining it. This world computer consisted of a superstructure that was the Earth itself and was powered by its endless rotation. It had the ability to predict human history with great accuracy with this power growing even more precise as more landmarks were developed around the world with power pyramidons. Through this machine, the Brotherhood's private interests were kept in power. Certain humans were born that had an innate connection toe Terranometer and served as part of the great machine with them being able to show the visions it predicted. People were able to converse within the confines of the device's machine-space. (Red She-Hulk v1 #60)

Their original headquarters was located beneath Rome in a place called the Immortal City (Urbis Immortalis) that was said to be an eternal place. It was a perfectly preserved subterranean city located a quarter mile underground that was the home of the undying ones and immortals of the Brotherhood. Within the city, there resided the Iter that was a door that could not be opened and had been locked for centuries with the key missing. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1)
