Bruce McGivern was a US STRATCOM agent who was a member of their Anti-Umbrella Pursuit Investigation Team. Although he was known for acting recklessly with little or no regard for his own life, Bruce possessed a strong sense of justice and always turned in a first-class performance. When Morpheus D. Duvall took over the Spencer Rain and announced his plans to fire missiles containing the T-Virus at major cities around the world, STRATCOM sent Bruce and Bruce alone to board the cruiser and apprehend Morpheus. But little did Bruce know exactly what he was getting himself into.

No sooner had be boarded the Spencer Rain and encountered Morpheus than he'd been overpowered and had Morpheus' gun stuck to his head. But, as Morpheus prepared to finish the American agent off, a mysterious figure tossed a grenade that severely injured the villain, forcing him to retreat. Left to his own devices, Bruce began to explore the ship, encountering the passengers and crew, infected with the T-Virus and now flesh-eating zombies. He also encountered Fong Ling, who, it was revealed, was the one who'd thrown the grenade. After a rough start, the pair decided to team up.

Besides zombies, Bruce had to deal with a variety of other viral-induced horrors. First, Morpheus unleashed a pair of Hunter Elites to kill him and Ling, but Bruce managed to kill them. Morpheus then used the TG-Virus to turn himself into the female T-092 Tyrant, and after failing to harm the new, improved killing machine Bruce was forced to flee. Eventually he and Ling discovered that the Spencer Rain was headed towards a rocky island at full speed, and they were forced to jump ship, but not before tangling with the T-091 Tyrant. The island, as it turned out, was an old, abandoned Umbrella waste disposal facility that Morpheus was using as her base of operations.

Here, Bruce encountered a variety of Umbrella's failed experiments such as the super-fast, multi-eyed Glimmers, the monstrous Pluto, and the Nautilus and her ferocious "Torpedo Kids." When Morpheus captured Fong Ling and started the missile launch countdown, Bruce first had to contend with the electrified villain, and then stop the launch. The former he did using the powerful Charged Particle Rifle, the latter with Ling's invaluable assistance. Although Morpheus came back for a final time as an enormous, bloblike beast, Bruce was able to kill her and end the threat of Morpheus forever. He and Ling were then picked up from the island by search and rescue helicopters.
