Chitauri (Ultimate Marvel)

The Chitauri are an alien race in Ultimate Marvel.

History

The Chitauri were an extraterrestrial species that were known to inhabit the universe. (Ultimates v1 #1)

On Earth, they came to the planet when it was suffering from the events of World War II where Chitauri agents worked in secret alongside Nazi Germany. However, this attempt was thwarted by the super-soldier codenamed Captain America. Through the entirety World War II, the Chitauri were being driven out of their operations in Africa and Europe, and even from their main Japanese training camps in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Following the end of the war, the Chitauri withdrew to make new plans. (Ultimates v1 #8)

Afterwards, they engaged in more long-term methods of manipulation such as will-inhibiting drugs in many nations' water supplies, influencing the media, and R.F.I.D. (Radio-frequency identification) microchips to be implanted in schoolchildren, among other means. The Chitauri also infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., particularly the Psi-Division which could telepathically ferret out Chitauri agents. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. was able to detect some of the low-ranking "drone" staff of the aliens, disguised as common office workers, and wiped them out in an assault led by Black Widow and Hawkeye. The Chitauri planted false information through the compromised Psi-Division that led S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Ultimates into a trap on a small Micronesian island; due to the combined efforts of Iron Man and Thor, the Ultimates, Nick Fury and a handful of S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers survived, but thousands of them were killed and dozens of Helicarriers were destroyed. (Ultimates v1 #10)

The Chitauri then counterattacked by infiltrating the Triskelion and capturing the Wasp. The Chitauri leader, known only by his former Nazi identity as Herr Kleiser, took the Wasp to a hidden Chitauri base in Arizona. However, their location was given away when a fleet of damaged Chitauri starships suddenly entered Earth's atmosphere to hover above the formerly secret base, claiming that they were fleeing major defeats across the galaxy by their intergalactic enemies and that the remainder of their forces were forced to the "backwaters" of the Milky Way galaxy, specifically Earth's solar system. Disregarding Herr Kleiser's long-term efforts, the Chitauri ordered him to destroy Earth and its solar system with a doomsday bomb as part of a scorched-earth policy and retreat to the "lower fourth-dimension." The Ultimates and all available S.H.I.E.L.D. and military forces immediately converged on the alien fleet. (Ultimates v1 #11)

Overview

They claimed to be part of 'the immune system of the universe' where they wiped out disorder and free will wherever they found it. They seemed to prefer to act behind the scenes, mimicking and influencing the social and military methods of the species they are currently infiltrating. (Ultimates v1 #1)

• The Chitauri were created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch where they made their first appearance in The Ultimates v1 #8 (November, 2002).
• The species were adapted for use for the Marvel Cinematic Universe where after appearing in The Avengers, they were adapted again for the mainstream Marvel Comics on Earth-616.

Films

• In Ultimate Avengers, the Chitauri appeared in the setting of the animated film. They were shown to had operated during World War II where they were secretly aiding the Nazi's and one of their primary agents being Herr Kleiser. Though Germany was defeated, the aliens operated in the shadows until the modern age when Captain America was retrieved from the ice after facing off against Kleiser. By this point, S.H.I.E.L.D. were aware of the existence of the Chitauri and Bruce Banner along with Betty Ross were charged with finding a means of replicating the Super Soldier Serum. The aliens destroyed a satellite that was tracking their movements and attack the S.H.I.E.L.D. base which leads to Nick Fury activating Project Avenger. The heroes assembled, however, do not work well together leading to their near defeat and Banner turns into the rampaging Hulk who defeats the Chitauri before turning on his allies leading to Bruce's incarceration.
• In Ultimate Avengers 2, the Chitauri returned in the setting of the animated film sequel. Despite their defeat, the aliens continued their next offensive which sees Herr Kleiser moving to attack Wakanda so that the Chitauri can claim its stores of Vibranium which was used to create the invaders technology. After King T'Chaka was killed by Kleiser, the newly crowned Black Panther T'Challa seeks out the aid of Captain America who brings the Avengers to protect Wakanda leading to an invasion of the entire planet. The Chitauri mothership itself approaches Wakanda's capital where Bruce Banner learns that the alien Vibranium degraded upon exposure to gamma rays. This leads to a gamma ray generator being created and Hank Pym sacrificing his life in order to detonate it in the Chitauri mothership leading to the aliens being defeated.
