Biography

Origin

Werner Vertigo

Civil war broke out in Vlatava between Count Vertigo and his government, and Muslim rebels. Spectre arrived to mete out God's wrath, and started attacking both sides. Vertigo confronted him, but was no match for Spectre's might. Spectre brought Vertigo together with the rebel leader General Hafza, and they both blamed each other for the bloodshed. For centuries, Christians and Muslims had clashed in the country. Both sides had spilled blood for years in Vlatava, and Spectre turned to the Earth to tell him who was guilty. The dead arose to fight anew, and declared everyone in Vlatava guilty. He razed the country in hellfire, killing every man, woman, and child, but sparing Hafza and Vertigo. Their punishment was to be given the gift of the destroyed land they'd fought over. A weeping Vertigo asked why his country, when all nations had blood on their hands. Spectre saw something to this argument, and decided that the world might be too old and evil to be redeemed, and in need of judgment. (Spectre v3 #13)

Director Bones found Count Vertigo battling a robot simulacra of Green Arrow, and warned him to drop his grudge against the hero or face reassignment from the D.E.O. to Task Force X. Agent Vinson wanted a sample of Arrow's DNA to prove he was a metahuman, and sent Vertigo to a south seas island where Arrow was rediscovering himself. They fought, and Arrow won, but passed out because jellyfish had poisoned him. Vertigo saved his life, felt at peace, and resigned from the D.E.O. He returned to Vlatavia to battle the fascist dictatorship that'd been put in place since he left. (Green Arrow v3 #22)

At some point, Vertigo came to join Lex Luthor's Society that saw various supervillains working together. At the time, Luthor wanted to destroy the Secret Six III who were a band of dissident villains that refused to join the Society. In response, Luthor sent Vertigo and a number of other Society members to confront the Six aboard the Petrovia, a Russia cargo freighter carrying Thanagarian weapons destined for the Society. The Society defeated the Secret Six and brought them back to Lex Luthor. (Villains United v1 #2) Vertigo was among the Society members assigned to guard the Secret Six while the Crime Doctor tortured them for information about their leader Mockingbird. The Secret Six escaped and defeated Vertigo and his compatriots, only leaving them alive so they could deliver a message to the leaders of the Society that their days were numbered. (Villains United v1 #3)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Werner Zytle

Though appearing to be a kind and benevolent monarch, he continued to be involved in organized crime, using the alias Count Vertigo. When Green Arrow traveled to Vlatava to rescue a kidnapped Shado, Vertigo challenged him to a fight. With an implant in his ear that could create unbalancing and nauseating waves, Vertigo had the upper hand until Green Arrow used an EMP arrow in his quiver. (Green Arrow v5 #22)

Count Vertigo later joined Richard Dragon's Longbow Hunters. (Green Arrow v5 #31)

He later got control of experimental Lord Tech that enhanced mental powers that was leaked to various parties. Count Vertigo came to install one such machine to hit body that increased his vertigo powers to effect not only the mind but matter as well. Thus, he was able to twist people and objects inside-out through the use of his powers which he used to enforce his rule over Vlatava. At this time, Wonder Woman along with Maxwell Lord arrived in the country where they intended to recover the stolen Lord Tech that was being used by various parties to create havoc around the world. Their plane came to crash in the nation where Diana was temporarily blinded as a result of Count Vertigo's powers but with the aid of the Lasso of Truth along with her Amazonian training managed to achieve a kind of vision. She used this to battle Count Vertigo with her destroying the Lord Tech machine attached to him thus knocking him out as well as ending his revolution. (Wonder Woman v1 #766)
