History

Origin

The Darkstars was an intergalactic law enforcement body that was created by the Controllers. They lived in quiet contemplation on their world and did not want their society interrupted by disturbances from the rest of the universe. As such, they sought to end threats when they emerged but over a thousand years they came to determine that they needed to be proactive in ending dangers before the emerged. Thus, they formed an organization called N.E.M.O. that managed these agents called Darkstars. In time, they came to be rivals of the Green Lantern Corps in the role of galactic enforcement. (Darkstars v1 #3)

With the Controllers gone, their support along with their power being cut off from the Exo-Mantles with only those containing the upgraded uniforms still operating due to those suits self-contained energy units. Around this time, Grayven and his forces began ravaging worlds from the outer rim of the galaxy with them killing nineteen Darkstars alongside billions of beings. Their path led them to Rann with John Stewart leading the Darkstars in the defence of that world with Kyle Rayner and Adam Strange standing alongside them. (Green Lantern v3 #74)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different timeline of events.

From their secret base, the Controllers prepared their legion of new Exo-Mantles that were designed to take over their wearers and enslave them to their control in bringing order to the cosmos. However, one of the mantles activated with Darkstar One seeking a volunteer to pilot it and it turned against the Controllers before going into deep space to find an operator. It found one on Mogo where it appeared at the Sciencells before the captive Tomar-Tu who accepted the mantles offer in being its user as they sought to enforce justice in the universe. Equipped with its power, Tomar-Tu then departed the Sciencells and headed towards deep space to bring about his goal of eliminating criminals. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #42)

Overview

In appearance, the Darkstars were an interstellar law-enforcement organisation designed to keep the galaxy's worst elements at arms lengths. (Darkstar v1 #0)

Leadership of N.E.M.O. was headed by a figure who held the post of Administrator. (Darkstars v1 #4)

Darkstars were agents that would operate at great distances from the Controller's world and thus at no great expense to the organisation. Each were expected to give their life if need be so that the Controllers could maintain order. (Darkstar v1 #0)

Under N.E.M.O. regulations, a Darkstar was permitted to pick two deputies chosen from the native population of a patrolled world and appointed them to the jurisdiction of protecting the planet. These junior operatives wore weaker versions of the Darkstar suits. This was because regulations forbid a true Darkstar suit being given to a native deputy as it was believed that primitive races could not handle the great power given to them by the advanced technology. Salary was provided to officers that was given once a lunar cycle with it being offered either in the form of gold or Rigellian credits. (Darkstars v1 #3)

Their ships were able to transmit a narrowcast signal on a variety of frequencies. (Darkstars v1 #4)
