Biography
His father was a scientist where he lived with his wife and child peacefully. This was until the day his father was chosen to be a Green Lantern. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #43)
The wounded Xudarian was taken for treatment where whilst unconscious he spoke of seeking revenge against Hal Jordan for what he did to the Lost Lanterns. Unknown to him, Jordan had been reinstated into the Corps where he was attempted to redeem himself for his actions as Parallax. This saw him beseech the Guardians for launching a rescue mission into the Lost Sector of space to recover Tomar-Tu's captured comrades. The Oan's denied his request as they deemed it emotional and threatened to reawaken the Manhunters in their territory. Despite their edict, he decided to act on his own alongside Guy Gardner to rescue the other Lost Lanterns. (Green Lantern v4 #11)
Tomar and the Lost Lanterns traveled to Qward to retrieve Ion, and found Hal Jordan being overwhelmed by the Sinestro Corps. Parallax told Hal that the GLC despised him and had abandoned him, but Ke’Haan said that although they hated Hal they would never abandon a fellow Lantern. Parallax killed Jack T. Chance, and Hal and the remaining Lost Lanterns retreated to Qward’s underground catacombs. They split up, with Ke’Haan and his allies attempting to locate the imprisoned Ion, while Hal was joined by Graf Toren and Tomar-Tu in rescuing Guy and John Stewart. Tomar wanted to be by Hal’s side because his father called Hal a friend. They found their comrades, but were confronted by Lyssa Drak, keeper of the Book of Parallax, who was in the process of breaking their friends and making them give in to fear. Hal defeated Lyssa Drak, and freed Guy and John Stewart, and because his power ring was running low on energy he was forced to don a number of Sinestro Corps rings, his time infected by Parallax gave him a limited mastery over fear. Sinestro appeared and showed Hal he had no true understanding of fear, but just then the remaining Lost Lanterns returned, having rescued Ion, and saved Hal, Graf and Tomar-Tu from Sinestro, and fleeing back to the positive-matter universe. The Guardians foresaw the Blackest Night prophecy coming to pass with the rise of the Sinestro Corps, and did the unthinkable, rewriting the Book of Oa. The first of their ten new laws stated that the Corps power rings were authorized to use lethal force against the Sinestro Corps. (Green Lantern v4 #23) Tomar and the Green Lantern Corps arrived on Earth to fend off the Sinestro Corps invasion of the planet. Dozens of Sinestro Corps soldiers were slaughtered. (Green Lantern v4 #24) The Sinestro Corps War raged on Earth, and while Zreenah, the GLC and an army of superheroes battled the Corps the Anti-Monitor prepared to unleash an anti-matter wave to destroy Earth. With Earth’s destruction, the entire 52 would fall, and he would once again rule all that was. The GLC ruptured the heart of Anti-Monitor’s Warworld, the Sinestro Corps central power battery, and created a shield around Warworld and the Monitor. The ensuing blast nearly destroyed the Anti-Monitor, and he was finished off by Superman-Prime, who betrayed him for having destroyed his home, Earth-Prime. GL Hal Jordan defeated Sinestro in personal combat, and the Sinestro Corps, lacking any leadership, fled Earth. The heroes rejoiced and began rebuilding the damage the Sinestro Corps did. This saw numerous Sinestro Corpsmen arrive at the scene in order to kill Tomar-Tu for the death of Romat-Ru but they were opposed by Hal Jordan. Jordan intended for Tomar to be judged under the laws of the Green Lantern Corps. The event served as one of the points that fractured the alliance that was made between the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #24) Hostilities were stopped with the Sinestro Corps under Soranik Natu departing Mogo. Tomar-Tu was stripped of his status as a Green Lantern with him wanting to serve his sentence as penance for his actions. Jordan managed to convince Stewart that Tomar-Tu's ring should go to a sentient on Xudar to continue the line of Xudarian Green Lanterns with it selecting Somar-Le as his replacement. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #25) He remained in the Sciencells where Somar-Le would regularly visit him as she sought to understand why a hero of her people would murder anyone. Tomar during his time imprisoned had much time to think over his actions and decided that he had done a correct thing as Romat-Ru would only have escaped custody after which he would have killed someone else. Thus, Tomar came to believe that only through killing could justice be achieved and decided that this was his path. Whilst talking to Hal Jordan from his cell, a Darkstar Exo-Mantle appeared before him looking for a volunteer where it inducted him into their ranks in enforcing justice as Darkstar One. He then departed in his new armor and sought to continue his goal in eradicating evil. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #42) Tomar-Tu then came to head the Darkstars who were all linked to one another and powered by the captive Controllers as they began to target criminals for elimination throughout the universe. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #42) Among his first acts was going to Earth's Stryker's Prison where he killed Goldface for the murder of his father. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #44)
In the battle at Darkstar Central Command, Tomar-Tu fought with Hal Jordan where he attempted to force the Green Lantern's surrender or to be killed by him to prove his point that only killing could bring about a means to an end. However, Jordan managed to defeat his foe and sent a surge of green willpower into the main core thus causing all the Exo-Mantles to suffer a malfunction and disengage thus defeating the Darkstar army. A horrified Tomar-Tu came to regret his actions and in despair wondered how he could live with himself to which Jordan told him to pay his debt by serving his time in prison whereupon he should aim to be a better man. At that point, General Zod had arrived where he intended to get vengeance on the son of Tomar-Re for the perceived failure of the Green Lantern in protecting Krypton. Whilst attempting to protect Tomar-Tu, the Xandarian used the distraction to grab his Exo-Mantle's blaster and gave a mortal injury to himself. Tomar-Tu believed that this was just punishment for his crimes and in his dying moments he asked Hal Jordan to tell the others that in the end he still remained good before he perished. Overview
Personality and attributes
It was said that deep down he had never gotten over the murder of Tomar-Re with his death killing the man Tomar-Tu wanted to become when he grew up. As such, it was said that deep down he was still a scared kid who said that his father did not leave him but rather was taken from him by a killer who should have been killed first. Thus, he ultimately had held onto his fathers absence from his life and he became a Green Lantern to fix what was broken inside of him. These feelings later led to him changing his view of the universe and the way he could bring justice. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #50)
After murdering Romat-Ru, he came to conclude that his actions were righteous as he reasoned that if taken into custody that the Xudarian criminal would only have escaped and killed more innocent lives. Thus, Tomar believed he had achieved a lasting justice by eliminating the criminal in order to save more lives. As such, he stated that he came to have no regrets over the murder and in fact if faced with the choice he would have done it again. By this point, he stated that he was a killer and would kill again so that he could purge the universe of criminals. He showcased an example of his father Tomar-Re who died at the hands of the Earth supervillain Goldface after that criminal had escaped. Tomar-Tu believed that if criminals were killed then they would not escape to kill again. As such, he came to believe that if he were to join the Emerald Space afterlife for Green Lanterns that he would meet his father there with a clear conscience despite murdering criminals that surrendered.
