History

Deadman Wonderland was a privately operated prison that was created in Japan falling the Great Tokyo Earthquake at ground zero. It was funded by Rinichirō Hagire and run by Tsunenaga Tamaki who served as the warden for the prison. The purpose of the site was to gather prisoners from all around Japan that were kept in an amusement park setting that was open to the public. Finances raised from the public tourism was used to aid in the revival of the destroyed metropolis in Japan. As it was open to the public, daily tours were presented with the visitors watching the events at the park-like facility run by the prison population. Unknown to anyone, the true purpose of the prison was to house the Deadmen that were individuals infected by the Nameless Worm and gained the abilities to manipulate their blood to achieve a variety of feats.

The prison was rocked by a devastating event involving Nagi Kengamine and a violent confrontation with the Undertakers. While imprisoned in the G-Ward two years prior to the main storyline, Nagi had entered a relationship with a fellow female Deadman, and the two were eventually expecting a child. This hope was shattered when the promoter, Tsunenaga Tamaki, forced the couple to face each other in a Carnival Corpse match. Nagi intentionally threw the fight to protect his pregnant wife, an act of 'dishonesty' for which Tamaki punished him by surgically removing his vocal cords. In a further show of cruelty, Tamaki reneged on their deal and ordered the Undertaker Azuma Genkaku to kill Nagi's lover. Witnessing the murder of his wife and unborn child triggered a 'bloody rampage' in which Nagi, driven by a fit of insane rage, slaughtered 22 Undertaker soldiers almost to the last man. To preserve his remaining sanity after this trauma, Nagi repressed the memory of his child's death, convincing himself that his infant daughter was still alive in a hospital on the surface. This delusional hope became the foundation upon which he founded Scar Chain, a rebel group dedicated to exposing the prison's atrocities and achieving the 'freedom' he believed his child was waiting for.

In the year 2023, Ganta Igarashi's ordinary life at Nagano Middle School was shattered when a mysterious, floating entity known as the Red Man appeared outside his classroom window and massacred his entire class, leaving Ganta as the sole survivor. Before vanishing, the Red Man implanted a crimson crystal shard into Ganta’s chest, an act that unknowingly granted him the ability to manipulate his own blood. Despite his innocence, Ganta was subjected to a fraudulent trial orchestrated by his own lawyer, Tsunenaga Tamaki, who used doctored video evidence to secure a death sentence. Sentenced to the privately run Deadman Wonderland prison, Ganta was fitted with a lethal collar that constantly injected poison, requiring him to consume 'candy' antidotes every three days to survive. His initial entry was marked by confusion and brutality; he was forced to navigate the prison's internal economy of Cast Points and survived a lethal Dog Race amusement game only by the intervention of a mysterious albino girl named Shiro. It was during a subsequent attempt on his life by prison thugs that Ganta’s desperation finally awakened his "Branch of Sin" power, allowing him to destroy a falling projectile and inadvertently revealing his status as a 'Deadman' to the prison's hidden observers.

Around this time, the Forgeries were introduced. The Chief Guard, Makina discovered Tamaki's plan and attempted a coup d'état. She succeeded with the help of Ganta Igarashi and the other Deadmen. Tamaki commits suicide and the prison was closed for good. Toto Sakigami later surfaces and assumes complete control over Deadman Wonderland. All Deadmen were later retried and the regular prisoners were transferred to another prison. After Makina's explanation, a mission to return to infiltrate Deadman Wonderland was installed though they all perished at the hands of Hagire and the Wretched Egg.

Makina and Karako later establish a plan to return to Deadman Wonderland alongside other Deadmen with the purpose of defeating Hagire and stopping the Wretched Egg. The mission succeeds and Deadman Wonderland was destroyed in a battle between Ganta and Shiro.

Overview

As it was a private institution, Wonderland was subject to government inspection in order to ensure it complied with all regulations. Unknown to the general population, the primary attraction of the prison was a cruel game of survival whereby many inmates lost their lives or were badly maimed simply for the entertainment of a largely oblivious public. Within Deadman Wonderland, the prison guard staff were given full autonomy on how they punished the prisoners that often resulted in bloodshed.

Prisoners were outfitted with a collar that served multiple functions from being a life monitor, locator and stunner. Those on death row received poison injections through the collar and were required to take a special antidote masked in candy every three days. The collars had a countdown timer that warned the prisoner through blinking and beeping when time was running low. If the timer reached zero, than the display on the collar read "DEAD" and killed the inmate. There were only two ways through the collars could be removed; either they killed the prisoner whereupon they unlocked or through the use of key cards carried by the prison guards.

Within the prison, the majority of prisoners enjoyed a great deal of freedom and made use of it unique form of currency known as Cast Points. Through these, prisoners could purchase a wide variety of items ranging from ordinary lunches, luxurious furniture for their rooms or even taking years of their sentence. Those on death row were also able to use Cast Points for the purchase of candy that was essential in extending their life due to the collars. In the case of Deadmen, Cast Points could not be used for them to gain their freedom.

One system based in the prison was the Mother Goose System that was a device created by Sorae Igarashi in order to seal the Wretched Egg. The Mother Goose System was positioned in the center of Deadman Wonderland. It was first built in the Medical Center, but when it was destroyed by the Great Tokyo Earthquake, Deadman Wonderland was built over it. The Mother Goose System is made out of two main parts: the Center Part and the Chorus Blocks. The Chorus Blocks are composed around the Center Part in the formation of a circle. The Center Part transmits the Lullaby to the Wretched Egg, so its powers will be sealed. The Chorus Blocks enhance the Lullaby, making it have a broader range. When Shiro can't hear the Lullaby anymore, the Wretched Egg takes over. When the volume of the Center Part is put to maximum, the Wretched Egg is completely sealed. Inside the Chorus Blocks, there is a dark, red liquid. In the notes of Sorae, Makina discovered that the liquid is in fact flesh from the Wretched Egg herself.
