History

The Destiny was a large interstellar exploration vessel that was constructed by the Ancients long ago.

It was believed to had been launched hundreds of thousands of years ago. (Episode: Air, Part 1)

As part of their effort, they launched a number of unmanned seed ships ahead where they were programmed to gather data, resources and to manufacture Stargates that were to be placed on inhabitable worlds. All the information that was gathered by these ships was then relayed back to the Destiny in order to help plot its course. Afterwards, the Destiny itself was launched but was unmanned with the Ancients planning to use the Stargate to travel onto it once it had reached far enough into the universe. This project was eventually abandoned with some suspecting that the Ancients left it in favour of Ascension. (Episode: Air, Part 2)

In 2009, the personnel of Stargate Command's Icarus Project managed to unlock the Stargate's ninth chevron. At the same time, Icarus Base came under attack by the Lucian Alliance and they were forced to evacuate through the gate to Destiny. (Episode: Air, Part 1)

Overview

Control of the ship was achieved through a Chair interface that was an earlier version of the technology developed by the Ancients. (Episode: Life)

A subspace link connected the Destiny to the forward seed ships where their data was transmitted to it. (Episode: Life)

For travel, the ship journeyed through conventional space using its 12 faster than light engines. A pre-programmed course was followed by the ship though it was able to stop to meet the survival needs of its crew. The ship will also drop out of FTL whenever it needed to recharge its reserves by traveling through the corona of a star. (Episode: Air, Part 1)

The ship was equipped with a Stargate consisting of 36 symbols though these were not represented by constellations as the Destiny travelled across galaxies. Its own range was fairly limited though if supplied with enogh power then it was able to connect to a gate in a distant galaxy. Hand-held remotes were used to activate the gates to newly deposited Stargtes that had been dropped by the seedships. (Episode: Air, Part 1)

The Destiny was stocked with small handheld spherical floating drones that could transmit their footage to a terminal. (Episode: Air, Part 2)
