History
Origin
The Digimon Sovereigns (Japanese: 四聖獣, Hepburn: Shiseijū?, lit. "Four Holy Beasts") were a group of Mega-level Holy Beast Digimon.
The Sovereigns have reigned over and protected the Digital World since the age of myth, and have passed into legend as beings which are extremely difficult to track down.
Due to Lucemon, Huanglongmon was sealed in the deepest, darkest place within the earth. This caused the Sovereigns to lose their rule and struggle for hegemony, but an equilibrium was established that was still maintained.
Digimon Tamers
Born from the chaotic data streams of the burgeoning Digital World, the Digimon Sovereigns were among the first primitive artificial lifeforms to achieve their ultimate Mega forms through the sheer accumulation of vast information. In the era known as the Age of Myth, they recognized that the rapid expansion of the digital network had awakened the D-Reaper, an ancient, mindless deletion program designed to purge excessive data. To safeguard their world, these four powerful beings—Azulongmon, Zhuqiaomon, Baihumon, and Ebonwumon—claimed dominion over the cardinal directions and ascended to the deepest, sixth layer of the Digital World to serve as its self-appointed gods. In a calculated attempt to distance themselves from their human creators, whom they came to view as a chaotic influence, they ironically adopted the forms of ancient terrestrial deities found in human mythology. For ages, they maintained a delicate equilibrium, managing the Shining Digivolution as a source of growth for all Digimon while successfully suppressing the D-Reaper's periodic resurrections. However, as human technology advanced and data surged, the Sovereigns were forced into a desperate stalemate with the encroaching 'Wicked Wind', eventually leading Azulongmon to take the radical step of transforming the very essence of Digivolution into a living creature, Calumon, to hide it from the D-Reaper's hunger.
As the digital world matured, the Sovereigns faced their greatest existential threat when the D-Reaper reactivated in response to the explosion of global data, forcing the four gods into a brutal, multi-front war for survival. During this desperate conflict, the Sovereigns focused their divine energy on sealing the deletion program within the deepest recesses of the network, an act that required nearly all their focus and left the physical layers of the Digital World vulnerable. It was during this volatile era that the Sovereigns felt increasingly betrayed by their creators, as the human-led Hypnos project began utilizing the Juggernaut program to delete Digimon, which the Sovereigns perceived as a coordinated genocide alongside the D-Reaper's assault. In a bid to bolster their defenses, they recruited and empowered the Twelve Devas, divine servants tasked with retrieving the Catalyst and purging any human "intruders" who dared to cross the digital threshold. This period solidified the Sovereigns' transition from distant guardians to active, often antagonistic combatants who viewed the Real World as a direct catalyst for the encroaching apocalypse.
After being separated, and a long, difficult trek across the Digital World, the Tamers arrive at Zhuqiaomon's domain. As they battle him, Azulongmon makes his appearance. Meanwhile, Ryo Akiyama encounters Ebonwumon and Baihumon in the latter's domain, and soon, they all gather in Zhuqiaomon's area, just as the D-Reaper begins to make its appearance.
Here, a compromise is made, and the Sovereigns implore Calumon to release his power so Digimon can digivolve and fight back. Thus, it is Zhuqiaomon's plan that prevails in the end, even though that does not excuse his methods in attacking the Tamers. The Sovereigns lead their new army of Mega Digimon to fight the D-Reaper in the Digital World. Later, they travel to the Real World and help the Tamers by dragging the Cable Reaper back into the Digital World during Operation: Doodlebug, removing it from the battle.
Ryo Akiyama and Cyberdramon encounter Ebonwumon in Baihumon's territory, which he guards while Baihumon fights the D-Reaper, but then Baihumon returns, wounded. Later on, Baihumon and Ebonwumon meet with Azulongmon and Zhuqiaomon on how to handle the D-Reaper situation and helps Calumon release the Shining Digivolution, which digivolves every Digimon in the Digital World to their Mega forms to help the Sovereigns. In the final battle against the D-Reaper, Ebonwumon assists Azulongmon, Baihumon and Zhuqiaomon into dragging the Cable Reaper back into the Digital World during Operation: Doodlebug, thus saving the Tamers from having to defeat it all over again.
Overview
In appearance, the Digimon Sovereigns were a group of four Mega-level Holy Beast Digimon. They each represented and ruled over the cardinal points of the compass. These colossal, ethereal entities that loomed as the massive, living anchors of the digital firmament, embodying the forms of the Four Holy Beasts from ancient legend. They manifested as a towering azure dragon, a multi-headed black tortoise entwined with a serpent, a majestic white tiger clad in golden armor, and a fierce vermilion bird wreathed in perpetual flames. Each possessed a staggering physical scale that dwarfed standard Digimon, with their bodies radiating a shimmering, data-saturated aura that signaled their status as the ultimate authorities of the Digital World. Despite their biological appearances, they were clearly constructs of advanced information, often surrounded by floating magical orbs or digital sigils that hummed with the power of the Catalyst. They existed as sentient landmarks of power, their very presence warping the reality of the sixth plain and commanding absolute reverence from any lesser being that stood within the shadow of their gargantuan, divine silhouettes.
Unlike normal Digimon, the Sovereigns had twelve DigiCores that composed their body whereas others of their kind only had one. These cores floated outside their body where it channelled their immortality and tremendous power.
Chief among their servants were the Deva (デーヴァ Dēva?) that consisted of twelve Ultimate-level Holy Beast Digimon with each Sovereign having three such followers.

Television
- In Digimon Tamers, the Digimon Sovereigns appeared in the setting of the anime television series. The Digimon Sovereigns live on the sixth, deepest plain of the Digital World, along with the Catalyst, or Shining Digivolution. They were some of the first Digimon to reach their highest form, and in an attempt to distance themselves from humans, they ironically took the appearance of the humans' gods. When the D-Reaper begins to re-emerge, the four Sovereigns cannot agree on a strategy. Zhuqiaomon believes that they should use the Shining Digivolution to allow Digimon to digivolve and fight back, while Azulongmon believes that it is the Digimon's ability to grow in strength that brought the D-Reaper out in the first place. He has the DigiGnomes transform the Shining Digivolution into Calumon. With the loss of the power to digivolve, Zhuqiaomon, thinking that the Digimon can instead grow stronger by defeating humanity, send his Deva into the Real World. Soon, his servant Makuramon discovers Calumon and attempts to return him to Zhuqiaomon, causing the Tamers to follow him in an attempt to rescue their friend. Makuramon, however, loses Calumon, and the Tamers find him, but Caturamon recaptures him.
