History

Original

Enforcement Droid 209 (ED-209) was a bipedal robotic construct designed for urban pacification and intended for use as law enforcement. It was created under the direction of Omni Consumer Products Senior President Dick Jones. He intended to deploy them on the streets of Detroit and use them for law enforcement with one such unit being brought for a live public demonstration in the board room. A junior executive named Mr. Kinney was told to hold a gun at which point ED-209 demanded that he put the weapon down. The demonstration was supposed to had been completed when he dropped the weapon but the robot initiated a countdown before it opened fire. Despite attempts at stopping it, ED-209 opened fire and killed the defenseless Mr. Kinney who was desperately trying to save his life. The technical staff managed to pull the wiring that resulted in the enforcement droid shutting down but the tragedy led to the robot being considered a failure. However, it served as the impetus for the RoboCop program that was being spearheaded by corporate executive Bob Morton.

When RoboCop attempted to arrest Dick Jones for collaborating with Clarence Boddicker, Jones deployed ED-209 to oppose the cyborg police officer. After taking severe hits, RoboCop escaped down a flight of stairs which stumped the droid, whose huge feet couldn't support it's weight on the small steps, causing to slip and land its 'back' on the next landing. The droid squealed loudly, helplessly banging it's legs on the landing. After its scuffle with RoboCop, Dick Jones took the opportunity to give the ED-209 project the green light, with RoboCop seemingly gone. An ED-209 was posted at the entrance of OCP, where it spotted an approaching RoboCop, who had reaffirmed his original identity as Alex Murphy. The large droid was destroyed with a single shot from a Cobra Assault Cannon Murphy had taken from Clarence Boddicker. Murphy fired a 2nd shot at the disabled droid that likely wasn't necessary but provided the coup de grace.

Attorney General Marcos later approved the 209 series for deployment in five American cities, including Detroit. Despite widespread complaints of malfunction, one of which getting its foot stuck in a manhole, the 209 series continually stayed in service even when OCP was taken over by the Kanemitsu Corporation. They were rarely seen on the streets and usually used as guards near OCP buildings.

Overview

The ED-209 was armed with three automatic cannons, two on the left platform, one on the right platform with an auto-shotgun and a rocket launcher capable of firing three rockets. It also had additional combat programming, enabling it to perform melee attack at closer ranges. Its speech center could synthesize human voices for peacekeeping matters, or animal-like sounds when injured or angry.

Notes

  • ED-209 was created by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner where they featured in the setting of the RoboCop universe.

In other media

Television

  • In the RoboCop: The Animated Series, the ED-209 series was developed by Dr. McNamara who intended them to be the latest in crime prevention machines that were to be produced by OCP. However, due to the existence of Robocop, the need for ED-209 robots was dropped. The newer ED-260 models were more advanced but still had several defective elements within its personality. One element of its programming was not being programmed for failure making it persistent in its operations. Similar to the ED-209, the units contained blasters in its arms which were used to destroy its targets. (Episode: The Man in the Iron Suit) The ED-260 possessed a track based system allowing it to drop on its legs and drive through the landscape to search for its target. When reaching its destination, it returned to walker mode. In addition to the arm blasters, the unit was capable of launching the arms at a target which was propelled through a rocket. (Episode: A Robot's Revenge)McNamara developed a new improved ED-260 model, however, there was still personality problems which made it ineffective in combat situations. This unit was tested against McNamara's new OCP Powersuit being piloted Lieutenant Hedgecock who defeated the ED-260 in combat training. (Episode: The Man in the Iron Suit) The doctor produced at least three more ED-260 units which remained at his personal lab. These were reprogrammed by a Middle Eastern terrorist cell which attempted to assassinate a rival. They activated one improved unit which was sent against Robocop but was destroyed. When the cybernetic detroit cop arrived at McNamara's lab, he had to face two more ED-260's which he managed to defeat. (Episode: A Robot's Revenge)

Video Games

  • In RoboCop Versus The Terminator, ED-209 appeared in the crossover run and gun video game. An ED-209 unit reprogrammed by the Terminators came to serve as a boss enemy that was defeated by RoboCop.
  • In Mortal Kombat II, ED-209 made a cameo appearance as a fatality move for RoboCop who was introduced in DLC in the fighting video game.
