History
The Empirikul were an organization traced to another dimension where a world fell under sway to the demon god Shuma-Gorath. In time, adherents of the being formed the Blood Monks where they fanatically enforced devotion in their deity with them taking over the planet. This saw science being outlawed and regarded as heresy with only a few practitioners of the art remaining in hiding. Among these were Lord Hieronymus Hellgore and his wife Abaddona Hellgore who resided on Tentacle Hill. The two intended to flee their doomed world with their son when the Blood Monks arrived to execute the heretics who believed in the laws of order practiced by science. The father was killed and the mother made her last stand where she was fatally wounded but not before she had the Eyebots take her son to an escape ship that was launched into space where they believed he would grow up in safety and away from harm. In time, the child grew him among the company of the Eyebots where he used the super science of his parents to empower himself as the Imperator where he began a crusade to scour the universe from the dangers of magic. (Doctor Strange v4 #7)
All sites of magical significance then became targets of the invaders. Thus, the Empirikul struck at the underwater Temple of Watoomb where they destroyed all magic animating the site. Whilst investigating the temple, Doctor Strange came to learn that the Empirikul invasion of Earth had already begun and he sent out a distress call on mystical wavelengths warning the planet's magicians. Among the locations targeted were Wundagore Mountain, Weirdworld, the Florida Everglades, Machu Pichu, the skies above New York, the hidden tavern called the Bar With No Doors and Doctor Strange's secret temple in the Himalayas. Doctor Strange was forced to use black magic against the initial wave of attackers which helped defend his Sanctum Sanctorum from them. However, the leader of the Empirikul personally intervened in order to deal with the Sorcerer Supreme himself. (Doctor Strange v4 #5) The Imperator came to overpower the weakened Doctor Strange whilst the Empirikul's Eyebots attacked other magic users around the planet during a time when magic was dying on Earth. (Doctor Strange v1 #6) With magic destroyed, the Empirikul's main task was complete with the few magic users on the planet going on the run and in hiding. During this time, the Empirikul began to burn all the arcane tomes in the Sanctum Sanctorum where a group of Eyebots went to investigate a hidden chamber where they accidentally freed the Thing in the Cellar. (Doctor Strange v1 #8)
