History
The Endless were a group of entities that embodied powerful forces and aspects of the universe with them being a family of seven siblings that included; Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Destruction and Delirium. (Sandman v2 #21)
Following his escape from decades of human captivity, Dream traveled to the gateway of his domain to seek passage back into his kingdom, confronting the gatekeepers who guarded the boundaries of his realm. He encountered the three mythical sentinels—the griffin, the pegasus, and the wyvern—who initially failed to recognize their severely weakened master due to his diminished state and lack of traditional vestments. Upon proving his identity, Dream was granted entry and discovered his palace had crumbled into a state of severe decay, with the infrastructure ruined and the vast libraries largely emptied during his long absence. To assess the damage to the infrastructure of the Dreaming, he summoned his faithful royal librarian, Lucien, who revealed that the vast majority of the realm's inhabitants had abandoned their posts and vanished into the waking world when the kingdom fell into abandonment. Weakened and exhausted from the journey, Dream collapsed onto the floor of his ruined throne room, realizing he would have to expend his remaining strength to initiate the restoration of his realm. Having spent centuries in isolation following his escape from human containment, the weary Lord of Dreams, Morpheus, experienced a deep existential crisis regarding his baseline purpose and planetary duties. Death established a brief, localized intervention inside an ordinary urban park sector, confronting her brother to pull him out of his severe apathy. Seeking to remind Morpheus of his responsibilities to the living world, she brought him along on her regular daily rounds across Earth, demonstrating how she gracefully accepts the souls of dying humans.
