Biography
Erik Selvig
He was the chief scientist in S.H.I.E.L.D.s Kobik Program that utilized fragments of Cosmic Cubes to alter reality. (Avengers Standoff: Assault On Pleasant Hill Alpha v1 #1)
Kobik later altered his entire history and made him into a Hydra agent who was devoted to the Red Skull. After witnessing this act, the Skull had Selvig propose the Pleasant Hill initiative to Director Maria Hill. (Captain America: Steve Rogers v1 #2)
When Baron Zemo recovered the Kobik fragments, he ordered Selvig to merge the shards back together to form the Cosmic Cube. The act though would have destroyed Kobik's intelligence which was something Erik refused to do as he came to see her as a daughter. To protect her from Zemo, Selvig decided to kill himself in order to prevent the Baron's plan from coming to fruition. (Captain America: Steve Rogers v1 #16)

Films
- In Thor, the character was introduced for the first time in the shared continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he was portrayed by actor Stellan Skarsgard. Erik Selvig was a male human of Scandinavian origin who as a child grew up on stories about Norse myth of the gods of Asgard. By adulthood, he came s professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at Culver University. During this time, he looked into the nature of Gamma Radiation and met Bruce Banner who was a victim of one such accident involving it. At some point, this, he encountered S.H.I.E.L.D. when they confiscated some documents that belonged to a friend. At school, he met both Jane Foster and her father with him being a close friend of their family. He later travelled with Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis where they studied thermonuclear astrophysics. The three of them later went to study a mysterious atmospheric event occurred in New Mexico. The trio's van collided with the exiled Thor, whom they took to a local hospital after Darcy tasered him. Initially, Selvig was highly doubtful of Thor's claims of being an Asgardian god, believing him to be delusional and his stories about Mjolnir and the Bifrost bridge nothing more than old myths he had heard as a child. S.H.I.E.L.D. soon arrived and confiscated all of their research and equipment, a move Selvig reluctantly accepted, having previously had a friend disappear after an encounter with the organization. Despite his initial skepticism, he grew a grudging respect and eventually a friendship with Thor, even securing his release from a temporary S.H.I.E.L.D. compound by claiming Thor was his colleague, Donald Blake. He later shared several heavy drinks with Thor at a local bar, a night that culminated in a bar brawl and earned Selvig the compliment that he had 'made his ancestors proud'. Selvig's view of the universe was entirely changed when the Destroyer was sent to Earth by Loki to kill Thor. Selvig helped clear civilians from a diner during the attack, witnessing first hand Thor's bravery and sacrifice, which ultimately led to Mjolnir returning to Thor and restoring his powers. After Thor defeated the Destroyer and prepared to return to Asgard, Selvig said his goodbyes and later received a visit from Nick Fury. In a post-credits scene, Selvig was shown a mysterious, glowing blue cube—the Tesseract—and was asked to study it for S.H.I.E.L.D.
- In The Avengers, Erik Selvig appeared in the setting of the 2012 live-action film where he was portrayed once again by actor Stellan Skarsgard. Erik Selvig's involvement began when Nick Fury brought him in to lead the research team studying the powerful Tesseract at the remote S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. Working alongside his old acquaintance Bruce Banner and other scientists, Selvig grew increasingly concerned about the cube's volatile energy emissions and the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. was using the power to develop weapons of mass destruction. His research was abruptly halted when the Tesseract activated a portal, through which Loki arrived on Earth. Selvig, among others present, quickly fell victim to Loki's mind-control powers via his Scepter. Under Loki's complete thrall, Selvig became a pawn in the god's invasion plan. He was forced to move the Tesseract to the top of Stark Tower in New York City and began constructing a portal generator using his advanced knowledge of astrophysics and the cube's energy signature. While completing the device, he had a brief moment of mental clarity—implied to be due to his prior experience with Odin's magic in Thor or a safeguard he built into the device—which allowed him to implement a hidden fail-safe. Once the portal was opened, allowing the Chitauri army to pour into the city during the Battle of New York, Selvig explained to Black Widow that Loki's Scepter was the key to closing the portal. After Black Widow used the Scepter to reverse the portal's energy flow, sending the Chitauri armada back and ending the invasion, Selvig was finally freed from Loki's mind control as a result of the device's destruction.
