History

Origin

The Gil'Disphan were a methane breathing race of aliens that came from a gas giant in the ellipitical galaxy 0-749. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #307) Beneath their homeworld's frozen exterior resided methane oceans that were teeming with life. As a result of being cut off from sunlight, the Mother Ocean of Gil'Dishpan saw the rise of a food chain that started with anaerobic bacteria that bubbled from the volcanoes of the sea floor. The apex creature was the sentient Gil'Dishpan race who became their quadrant's only aquatic species of interstellar conquerors. (R.E.B.E.L.S. v2 #7)

Due to their highly organized nature, they were put in charge of the supply lines of the Alliance. (Invasion v1 #1) Atlantean forces under Aquaman alongside the Sea Devils and Doom Patrol were noted to had fought against the Gil'Disphan invaders. The aliens were responsible for dispatching their mutant creations and though defeated the battle led to the first casualty in the invasion when Celsius of the Doom Patrol died. (Invasion v1 #2)

During the Starro invasion, Vril Dox was responsible for containing the alien horde within a quadrant of the galaxy by utilizing a powerful shield over a large region of space. Among the worlds trapped within this sphere were the Gil'Dishpan who happened to had been the only race to escape the shield due to the natural teleportation abilities of some of their kind. As a result, several factions attempted to court the Gil'Dishpan to join them with Starro seeking them in order to continue his invasion of known space. Vril Dox attempted to enlist the Gil'Dishpan's aid but they refused as they intended to give the Coluan to Starro in exchange for their world being left alone. However, Starro's forces invaded the planet where they took control of a large number of the population. In order to end Starro's new advantage, the Dominator Admiral left his vessels FTL behind on Gil'Dishpan where it ignited the methane and seemingly killed the entire population. (R.E.B.E.L.S. v2 #7)

The New 52

Kyle Rayner saved the crew of a Gil'Dishpan vessel that had come attack from a group of space sharks. (Green Lantern: New Guardians v1 #21)

30th/31st century

First recorded contact with the human race came in 3753 A.D. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #307) The race of Gil'Dans were admitted into the United Planets only because they seemingly renounced the depradations instigated by the Brain Globes of Rambat. (Legionnaires v1 #62) The political position of the species was neutral at all times and in fact served as frequent meditators of dispute between sentient races. This primarily stemmed from their disinterest in oxygen/nitrogen biospheres. A leading diplomat of the Gil'Dishpan was involved in negotiations to resole the dispute between the Khunds and United Planets. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #307) At some unknown point, Zymyr was banished by his kind due to what his people considered to be unethical and tasteless experiments on other species. (Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes v1 #4)

A Gil'Dishpan was as a member of the Dark Circle that operated in the shadows. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #107)

Overview

They breathe highly flammable methane and in other environments they kept this atmosphere within sophisticated containment bubbles. (Invasion v1 #2)

Gil'Disphan had a natural internal defense system that was deadly to their enemies. This took the form of pod-like protuberances that were able to shoot an acid-like liquid that was fatal to humans and even super-beings. (Invasion v1 #2) They were also considered telepaths and thus able to communicate mind-to-mind with others. (Legionnaires v1 #63) Certain members of their kind had the ability to open dimensional warp gates with these individuals known as Warp Weavers. (R.E.B.E.L.S. v2 #7)

Their race was noted to hold a disinterest in airbreathers who they perceived as lesser animals. (Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heroes v1 #4) Psychologically, the species claimed that they were bred to be devious. (Invasion v1 #2) They were also noted for being superbly organized. (Invasion v1 #1) They held a great reverance to the body of water where they resided on their homeworld which they called the Holy Mother Ocean. (R.E.B.E.L.S. v2 #7)
