Biography

Origin

Gray Fullbuster (Japanese: グレイ・フルバスター, Hepburn: Gurei Furubasutā) was a male human born on Earthland to his father Silver Fullbuster and mother Mika. The family lived in a village in the North when one day as a young boy it came under attack from the Demon Deliora who was a creature from the Books of Zeref. The entire village was devastated by the monster with all its inhabitants killed except for the young Gray who swore revenge against the demon. Around this time, an ice mage by the name of Ur arrived at the scene with her student where they came to investigate the destruction from the demon Deliora where they found Gray alive among the ruins. Ur took the young gray as her second student where she agreed to teach him the secrets of Ice-Make Magic alongside Lyon Vastia. Gray accepted the teaching given to him as he intended to use the training as a means of skills to eliminate Deliora through Ur's unorthodox methods. It was during this time that he developed the subconscious habit of stripping his clothes due to the teaching style of Ur. After learning of Deliora's location, Gray looked to confront the demon where he ignored the warnings of Ur and Lyon. However, he came to collapse from his fight against Deliora where he awoke to see his mentor Ur fight the demon. She came to urge her students to run away with Gray taking an unconscious Lyon from the scene where he came to see that Ur lost her leg in the fight which she replaced with an ice replacement. Waking up, Lyon tried to save his mentor by casting the Iced Shell spell to sacrifice himself for hr. Ur though froze Lyon in place whilst explaining how the spell was the only thing capable of defeating Deliora. She then used the spell herself causing her body to be destroyed and turning to ice to freeze the demon in place. Before her body was gone, she urged her students to step into the future whilst she sealed away the darkness thus dying as a result of this act. The next day, Lyon awoke and found the demon Deliora encased in ice thus learning of his mentor's sacrifice. This saw him blame Gray for Ur's death where the two apprentices came to part ways. Fullbuster then went to the west in search for strong wizards after following Ur's advice. This led to him encountering the Fairy Tail guild where he would ask its master Makarov Dreyar if there was a way to reverse the effects of the Iced Shell spell thus potentially restoring Ur. However, he was informed that the only spell that would reverse it would also kill what remained of Ur that existed in the ice trapping Deliora.

Gray was present when Erza entered the guild, having been told by Cana that that day would be lucky for him, though he regarded it as one of the worst days of his life, having lost his wallet and fallen in ditches. Later, when Cana pointed out Erza's loner behaviour and how she ignored Cana's own conversation attempts, Gray went over to talk to her, giving the excuse that he did not like it when new members of the guild did not introduce themselves to 'Gray the Great', but ended up arguing with her. He would constantly challenge Erza to battles after that, but was defeated each time. That is, until the day he found her crying by the riverside. He became flustered and refused to battle her. Upon questioning her about why she was always alone, she replied that she preferred being alone, but Gray retorted that she would not be crying if that was true. Gray was also present to welcome Mirajane, Elfman, and Lisanna into the guild, happily speaking with the latter two siblings who were able to fit in more readily than their older sister. Gray was present when Natsu brought the egg from which Happy would later hatch to the guild. He suggested that they all eat it together, but was astonished when Natsu claimed the egg to be a dragon's egg as the marks on it were akin to those made by a dragon's claw. He watched on sceptically as Lisanna and Natsu decided to hatch the egg together. The next day, he was as surprised as everybody else when Natsu stormed into the guild, raging about the egg's mysterious disappearance. Gray got angry when Natsu went around accusing people randomly of having stolen the egg. But everybody calmed down when Elfman returned, revealing that he had taken the egg to help warm it up in the night. Soon afterwards, the egg hatched to reveal a winged, blue cat. After the event, everybody returned to their usual jovial mood.

Fairy Tail

He was present at the guild when Natsu and Happy brought Lucy Heartfilia to Fairy Tail. Sitting in his shorts, having forgotten to wear his clothes, and immediately gets into a fight with Natsu. He stopped when Makarov orders them to do so and he gets scolded by him about his accidental nudity during his missions. Gray finds out the reward for Natsu's latest mission and he quietly wishes him luck, saying things were going to be interesting. Later, he is attacked by Natsu while he is coming back from a job, finding out that Natsu and Lucy are also returning from a job and their paths just happened to cross. He tells Natsu, Lucy, and Happy that Erza Scarlet was coming back, making them uneasy. They decide to head back, but are ambushed by a band of Mages that kidnap Happy and plan to eat him. The team manages to defeat them and rescue Happy, when they hear one of the defeated Mages mention 'Lullaby'. As Gray is about to get into a fight with Natsu yet again, hearing about Erza's arrival from Loke makes him stop. Later, he is forced to go on a mission with Erza along with Natsu, Happy, and Lucy, much to his chagrin. On their way to their mission, he shows Lucy his abilities as an Ice-Make Mage. Lucy then mentions that Gray's ice abilities and Natsu's fire abilities are probably what causes their quarrels. When they get off the train, they continue to discuss the mission, only to realize that they forgot to bring the motion-sick Natsu with them. After they are reunited with Natsu, they learn that Natsu had a confrontation in the train with a member of Eisenwald, Kageyama. Natsu states that he had a strange kind of flute with three eyes and a skull. Lucy then pipes in, saying that she had only heard about it in books, but that it might be 'Lullaby', the flute of death. Eisenwald takes over the Oshibana train station, forcing the five of them to make their way in, quickly encountering Eisenwald's Mages and fighting them. Erigor, the Ace of Eisenwald, however, has other plans and flees the scene with Gray and Natsu in hot pursuit. However, the two decide to split up and Gray runs into one of Eisenwald's elite members, Rayule.

While the two are fighting, Gray learned about the plan to kill all the guild masters who are at their regular meeting. Gray promptly freezes Rayule's face, ending their fight. He then informs Erza of this and they go to find Kageyama, so he can dispel Erigor's wind wall. Kageyama, however, was stabbed in the back by Karacka, a fellow Eisenwald guild member, before he can help them. After Lucy summons her new Celestial Spirit, Virgo, Gray compliments Virgo for being cute and as they escape, Gray is the only one to notice that Virgo and Lucy's skirts are flying up due to the wind. They then realize that Natsu and Happy are missing again. As they chase Natsu and Happy with the injured Kageyama, Gray gives him a speech about life and death, but the atmosphere is ruined when Lucy yells at Gray, asking him to kill Kageyama after he harasses her. They catch up to Natsu and Happy, only to see that Natsu has beaten Erigor. Gray, as usual, insults Natsu for having difficulties in the battle and insults him for his choice of clothes. As Erza congratulates the group for a job well done, Kageyama grabs the Lullaby flute and uses the Magic Four Wheel Drive to get to Clover Town, much to everyone's surprise. Chasing after him, they arrive and see Kageyama with Makarov, and are about to go to their master’s aid, but are stopped by guild masters Bob and Goldmine. They then see that Makarov has persuaded Kageyama not to use the Lullaby's Magic. Suddenly, the flute itself starts to talk and transforms into a giant demon. Gray teams up with Natsu and Erza to defeat the demon. When it attacks Natsu, it misses and heads for the guild masters instead. To protect the masters, he uses Ice-Make: Shield, and is complimented on how fast he can create the shield. He then proceeds to attack the Demon with his Ice-Make: Lance. With the three's combined efforts, Lullaby is defeated. However, they wind up accidentally destroying the Guild Masters' Meeting Building in the process, forcing the team and Makarov to hastily escape. After their return to Magnolia, Gray arrives in Lucy's apartment, much to her dismay, to remind her that Natsu and Erza are about to begin their fight. As he watches, he was shocked to hear that Erza was to be arrested for property damage by the Magic Council.

Sub-Zero Emperor Lyon

Gray waits for Erza's verdict like everyone else, but he learns that it was all a hoax and he voices his displeasure about that. Gray then falls prey, like everyone else, to Mystogan's Sleep Magic as the latter walks in. After Mystogan leaves and lifts the Sleep Magic, Gray explains to Lucy about Mystogan's actions. When Natsu, Happy, and Lucy take the S-Class request to lift the curse of Galuna Island, Makarov orders Laxus Dreyar to go after them, saying that he is the only one who can force them to come back. However, Gray stood up and volunteered to get them back instead. Gray catches up with the three in Hargeon, who are looking for a boat to take them to the island. Gray tries to persuade them to go back, but when Natsu resists, Gray tries to use Magic. Bobo, the boat owner, then spots them using Magic and tells them that he will take them to the island. Natsu sees this as an opening and knocks Gray unconscious, ties him up and brings him along. On their way to the island, Bobo shows them the effects of the island's demonic curse. Bobo then vanishes, and although Happy checks to see whether he has fallen into the water, he is nowhere to be found. All of this is rendered irrelevant when a large wave hits their boat and washes them ashore. Gray, now agreeing to help, goes with Natsu, Lucy, and Happy towards the island's village and meets its mayor, Moka, who asks them to destroy the moon and lift the curse. Deeming such a task impossible, they instead investigate the island's forest, getting attacked by a gigantic mouse which they defeat. In the process, the team manages to locate an abandoned temple. Natsu, commenting on the decayed floor, begins to slam it with his foot, causing it to crumble and hurtle them downwards into a cavern, also making Happy almost swallow a bone he had found. Lucy saves him from choking by pulling it out of his throat. In this cavern, they discover the frozen Demon Deliora along with three Mages: Sherry Blendy, Yuka Suzuki and Toby Horhorta, who converse about Angelica's defeat. Gray explains to the others what Deliora is: an immortal Demon that destroyed Ishban 10 years ago, and was sealed by his teacher, Ur, at the cost of her life.

The group decides to wait for the moon to come out to observe its involvement with the frozen demon. Lucy brings out her Celestial Spirit Lyra to pass the time. Happy wants her to sing a fish song, but Lucy tells Lyra to sing anything she likes. Her ability to sing songs reflecting what one has in their heart moves Gray to tears, much to the surprise of the others. When night arrives, they discover that the moonlight is hitting the Demon via the ritual Moon Drip which would melt the ice. As the team is hiding, Reitei Lyon, Sherry, Yuka and Toby arrive. Reitei Lyon inquires about the Moon Drip ritual, and, upon hearing that there are some intruders, orders the other three to obliterate the village as they are the only humans on the island. Enraged by the order given by Reitei Lyon, Natsu jumps out from hiding and attacks alongside Gray. Natsu is quickly frozen, and Gray tells Happy to escape with Lucy while he continues to fight Lyon. After Happy and Lucy leave, Gray kicked Natsu down the hill to protect him from Lyon's Magic. Gray then argued with Lyon about his motives, saying that Ur died to seal Deliora and that he was trying to destroy Ur's legacy. Lyon then asked him how he can live with the knowledge that he killed Ur whereupon the two then battled one another. Whilst battling, Lyon revealed that he would resurrect Deliora in order to kill the demon and by defeating that which Ur could not and allowing him to surpass her. Gray told him it was impossible, but Lyon reminded him that that was what they said to him, but he challenged Deliora anyway, resulting in Ur's death. Overcome with grief, Gray lost the battle and fell unconsciousness. When he woke up, he saw Natsu, who carried him back to the village. On their way to the village, Natsu comforted him for losing, saying that they were from Fairy Tail, a guild that did not know when to stop.

Alvarez Empire

During this time, he was approached by Erza where they received word that the destruction of the Dark Guilds saw the rise of a new group of Zeref cultists called Avatar. This group was gathering in secret and planning a purification ritual whereby they would kill the inhabitants of a town and sacrifice them to Zeref in an effort to summon their master. To stop them, Erza asked for Gray to infiltrate the cult and keep this a secret from everyone which included Juvia. Though reluctant to do so, he agreed as it meant that his cover would be maintained and the dark wizards of Avatar came to accept him into their ranks.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Gray Fullbuster was a young male human with dark blue eyes, a toned muscular body and his prominent feature being his black-coloured hair.

Generally, he was shown to hold a laid back personality but became serious when the time called for it.

Gray had said that he cared not if his opponent was a woman or a child as he would not go easy on anybody that hurt his comrades.

Powers and abilities

As a wizard, he was able to tap into his magic power and was trained in the use of Ice-Make magic (氷の造形魔法, アイスメイク Aisu Meiku) that was a form of Molding Magic which allowed the user to create ice and shape it according to their will.

A more advanced level of this was Ice Magic (氷の魔法 Kōri no Mahō) which allowed him to manipulate or create ice. It was this that allowed him to be able to use Iced Shell (絶対氷結 アイスドシェル Aisudo Sheru) that was a forbidden and extremely dangerous form of magic. Among the techniques he developed using this spell included:

  • Ice-Make: Sword : using Ice-Make, Gray was able to create a variety of swords composed of ice that he could use for melee combat. hese were highly durable with them able to cut through a target and parrying other weapons even those made of metal. A variation of this was Ice-Make: Cold Excalibur (氷聖剣コールドエクスカリバー Cōrudo Ekusukaribā) whereby he created a massive great-sword out of ice for melee combat that in addition to its slashing damage was capable of leaving large wakes of ice which can damage an opponent. Gray could use use Ice-Make: Ice Bringer (氷魔剣アイスブリンガー Aisu Buringā) whereby he made two swords of ice in his hands and rapidly moves them forward in an X motion to slash his opponent.
  • Ice-Make Unlimited: One Sided Chaotic Dance (一勢乱舞 Issei Ranbu) :
  • Ice-Make: Lance (槍騎兵ランス Ransu) : a powerful ranged attack whereby Gray extended his arms forward thus creating long, curved ice lances that he shoots toward his enemy in order to impale them.
  • Ice-Make: Wall (壁ウォール Wōru) : using only one hand, he could create a small or a large wall of ice in front of him that shielded everything behind it.
  • Ice-Make: Shield (盾シールド Shīrudo) : a large shield made of ice in front of Gray whose shape was vaguely reminiscent of a flower which shielded everything behind it.
  • Ice-Make: Hammer (大槌兵ハンマー Hanmā) :
  • Ice-Make: Ice Geyser (氷欠泉アイスゲイザー Aisu Geizā) :
  • Ice-Make: Prison (牢獄プリズン Purizun) : using his magic, Fullbuster was able to create a square cage out of ice to trap opponents.
  • Ice-Make: Clone : Gray was able to create copy of himself made out of ice that was identical to him and its true nature was only revealed on close careful inspection. He could use this to avoid enemy attacks or create a distraction to give Fullbuster an opening. He had shown to the capability of creating at least two such ice clone copies at a time.
  • Ice Blade: Seven Slice Dance (氷刃・七連舞 Hyōjin: Nanarenbu) :
  • Ice-Make: Death Scythe (大鎌デスサイズ Desu Saizu) :

He later came to enhance this with Lost Magic he learnt whilst operating as part of Avatar with this leading to Lost Iced Shell (消失絶対氷結 ロスト・アイスドシェル Rosuto Aisudo Sheru).

It was shown that his powers worked well with those of Juvia whose water abilities he could use to help make into ice-make creations.

From his father, he soon grew stronger through the use of Ice Devil Slayer Magic (氷の滅悪魔法 Kōri no Metsuaku Mahō) with the sigils appearing on his right arm. His powers were stronger to the point that he was able to freeze even Magical Barrier Particles (魔障粒子 Mashōryūshi) in the air thus making them harmless. Similar to other Slayers, he was able to consume external sources of ice in order to replenish his strength and enhance his own power whilst also being immune to its effects. It was sown that this form of magic was extremely powerful and effective against demons.

Techniques he gained as an Ice Devil Slayer included:

  • Ice Devil's Rage (氷魔の激昂 Hyōma no Gekikō) :
  • Ice Devil's Zeroth Long Sword (氷魔零ゼ口ノ太刀タチ Hyōma Zero no Tachi) :
  • Ice Devil's Zeroth Destruction Bow (氷魔零ゼ口ノ破弓ハキュウ Hyōma Zero no Hakyū) :
  • Ice Devil's Zeroth Destruction Fist (氷魔・零ゼロノ破拳ハケン Hyōma Zero no Haken) :

He was able to combine his magic with that of another to perform a Unison Raid (合体魔法ユニゾンレイド Yunizon Reido) that resulted in an extremely powerful attack.

As a wizard, he came to join the Fairy Tail (妖精の尻尾フェアリーテイル Fearī Teiru) guild from a young age.
