History

The Grendans were a race of sentient robots native to the planet Grenda that was situated in Space Sector 3009.

Around ten billion years ago, the Grendans were in existence with the network of artificial intelligences residing in the virtual domain of the Hive. They had been constructed by an unknown race of creators and sought the meaning of their existence. This saw them dispatch one of their own named Brill who was overwhelmed by being separated from the Hive's connection after emerging in a physical shell in the real world but managed to have courage to overcome this time. It was this trait that attracted one of the seven first Green Lantern Power Rings that inducted him into the Green Lantern Corps to fight in a crisis. (Green Lanterns v1 #27)

At some point, their world came to be targeted by an organic species known as the Krydos who conducted periodic raids against Grenda. This stemmed from their hatred of mechanical life forms who they deemed to be an affront to their 'creator'. (Green Lantern v1 #182)

After the seeming death of Stel, a funeral was held on Grenda for their Green Lantern. However, Yron opposed any mourning for what he deemed to be a failure as he felt that Stel did nothing to oppose the Grendans enemies the Krydos and only ended up dying in battle. During this time, the Krydos conducted another attack against Grenda in order to kill many of the mechanical natives. At this time, the sectors chosen Green Lantern came to defend the planet but an angry Yron instead attacked the corpsmen in order to take him to Oa. This was because Yron believed himself to the greatest warrior of his world and that he should have been selected as a Green Lantern instead of Stel. He ultimately demanded from the Guardians to be given a power ring and they decided to give him one leading to his induction into the Green Lantern Corps. With a ring, Yron then travelled to Grenda to defend his world from the Krydos attack. Despite his efforts, he only magnified the problem as his attempt to stop a Krydos attack ended up slowly killing the Grendans. (Green Lantern v1 #182)

In an effort to become human again, the Cyborg Superman travelled to the planet Grenda where he used his technopathic abilities to take over its robotic population. He had the billions of Grendans displaced from their homes and hiding underground where they were to remain. In the meantime, he usurp control of the Alpha Lanterns and secretly had them follow his commands in order to capture the Guardian Ganthet. (Green Lantern Corps v2 #51) After contact was lost with Grenda, Stel was dispatched by the Corps to investigate his homeworld where he reported that the population was missing before contact was lost with him. (Green Lantern Corps v2 #48)

Their greatest enemies were the Krydos, opposed by Grendan Green Lanterns Yron and Stel.

Overview

An advantage of being a robotic based lifeform was the capacity for their bodies to be rebuilt even if they were disassembled. (Green Lantern Corps v2 #51)

Grendans utilised a vast artificial intelligence that linked their minds together on their world with this being known as the Hive. Within the Hive, they were all connected and had virtual bodies with them taking form that best represented them. They could also have physical shells constructed allowing them to interact with the physical world but could face being separated from the Hive's network. (Green Lanterns v1 #27)

They believed in a being known as the Creator who was responsible for giving life to their race. (Green Lanterns v1 #27)

Allowing him to prove himself, the Guardians complied to his wish. However, Yron's foolhardy actions caused harm to many of his people, and, eventually, his death. (Green Lantern v2 #183)
