Biography
Stel was a artificial being from the planet Grenda which was a world where robots ruled the world. At some point, he was inducted into the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps. (Green Lantern v2 #11)
He was among the Green Lanterns on Yquem that served as a jury of peers and equals to decide upon Hal Jordan's abuse of his Power Ring's abilities. Initially, they came to a verdict of innocence but upon Jordan's insistence of being stripped of his position then Stel believed the human had a reason for the decision and that the jury should not go against his wishes. It was later discovered that the reason was because Jordan was being secretly targeted by the renegade Sinestro and sought to uncover the person responsible for controlling his mind. (Green Lantern v2 #11)
Stel was destroyed in battle with Krona.
After his death, the people of Grenda came under attack from the Krydos who believed the robotic inhabitants were an affront to their creator. In this time, a Grendan named Yron showed nothing but scorn towards the deceased Stel and viewed him with contempt for dying as well as blamed him for not defending their world or his love Elga. At that moment, a Green Lantern arrived to defend Grenda but Yron attacked the Corpsmen and forced him to take him to Oa to meet with the Guardians of the Universe. He arrogantly made his case to the Guardians to showcase his power and stated that only he was worthy of being a Green Lantern. The Oans reluctantly decided to give him a Power Ring in order to allow him to defend his homeworld from the Krydos. Despite his efforts, he ended up making the situation worse as when he countered a Krydos weapon it created an effect that became to harm the Grendans. (Green Lantern v1 #182) Rather than admit failure, the arrogant Yron decided to take the fight to the Krydos outpost on his world and engaged them in a foolhardy manner that brought even more danger to his people. The Krydos in the mean time were planning to deploy a poison to wipe out the mechanical lifeforms of Grenda and purge it of what they deemed as mockeries of life. Despite his efforts, Yron was overpowered and fatally wounded where in his final moments he realised how much of a hero Stel was as a Green Lantern. Yron's will infused his ring and it assembled Stel's broken body back together and restored him back to life where he defeated the Krydos. The resurrected Green Lantern was hailed a hero by the Grendans who dismissed Yron but Stel cautioned his people stating that his successor had died a hero with him creating a tomb to honour his sacrifice. (Green Lantern v1 #183)
He continued to serve with the Corps through the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The Sinestro Corps War raged on Earth, and while Stel, the GLC and an army of superheroes battled the Corps the Anti-Monitor prepared to unleash an anti-matter wave to destroy Earth. With Earth s destruction, the entire 52 would fall, and he would once again rule all that was. The GLC ruptured the heart of Anti-Monitor s Warworld, the Sinestro Corps central power battery, and created a shield around Warworld and the Monitor. The ensuing blast nearly destroyed the Anti-Monitor, and he was finished off by Superman-Prime, who betrayed him for having destroyed his home, Earth-Prime. GL Hal Jordan defeated Sinestro in personal combat, and the Sinestro Corps, lacking any leadership, fled Earth. The heroes rejoiced and began rebuilding the damage the Sinestro Corps did. (Green Lantern v4 #25)
The Guardians accused Gorius of interfering with the Psions, who the Guardians avoided since their initial ill-advised attempt to evolve a sentient race from reptiles created them. A curious Stel and Salakk listened in to the proceedings. Gorius revealed that she'd been following R.E.B.E.L. Starfire, who she felt kinship with because she'd suffered at the hands of the Gordanians much like Psion females suffered at the hands of their males. Females were used as breeding stock, and she and Starfire killed a number of Psions before destroying their breeding nexus where females were kept prisoner. Gorius said what she did was deal justice, and helped her fellow Psion females. (R.E.B.E.L.S. v1 #22)
