Jason Wyngarde was a male Mutant who came to live at some point in the modern age. (X-Men v1 #4)

He came to be a recruit in Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. (X-Men v1 #4)

Mastermind accompanied Magneto when the Master of Magnetism had detected a magnetic pulse from a plane crash. The only survivor was a young Lorna Dane who was in reality the daughter of Magneto. The early manifestation of her powers caused the plane to crash and killed her parents. Feeling she needed to live a normal life, Magneto had Mastermind use his illusions to alter Lorna's memories to prevent her remembering this tragedy and the fact that Magnus was her real father. (X-Factor v1 #243)

Using his powers, Mastermind created an illusory army allowing the Brotherhood to easily capture the South American country of Santo Marco. Whilst there, he came to observe Magneto's tyranny over the population with amusement. He later used illusory flames against the X-Men when they looked to stop the Brotherhood. During a battle with the X-Men, Magneto chose to abandon the country and set a nuclear bomb to explode in hopes of killing the X-Men and everyone else left behind. Mastermind fled with his teammates, but the bomb was secretly disarmed by Quicksilver. (X-Men v1 #4) Afterwards, Magneto Mastermind with locating the X-Men where he came to track them to Westchester County, but reported that he could find no trace of them. When giving this report, Mastermind was actually standing outside Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Magneto recalled him back to the Brotherhood's own headquarters located in orbit on Asteroid M. In combat with the X-Men, Mastermind used illusionary duplicates of himself to surround Iceman but was shocked when Marvel Girl levitated him high above the ground, and his illusions faded away. He was released when Marvel Girl's attention turned to a nearby struggle between Cyclops and Quicksilver. In the next battle between the two teams, Mastermind used his handgun in an attempt to shoot the Beast. The Beast used his acrobatics to avoid the bullet forcing Mastermind was forced to run to Magneto for help. (X-Men v1 #5)

Hellfire

Part of the Hellfire Club in Classic X-Men v1 #31.

Later, Mastermind was invited to apply for admission to the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. To prove his worth, Mastermind sought to use his mutant powers as well as artificial means to psionically alter the personality of the X-Man Jean Grey. The Inner Circle hoped she would willingly become the Inner Circle's new Black Queen. Unknown to Mastermind or anyone else, his victim was not the real Jean Grey, but the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force, which had duplicated Grey's form and personality. Mastermind succeeded in causing the false Grey to become the new Black Queen, but unintentionally triggered the process that would soon transform her into the insane Dark Phoenix. Before the latter transformation was complete, the false Grey broke free of Mastermind's control and opened his mind to all the psionic sense impressions she received from the cosmos. Unable to cope with them, Mastermind fell into a catatonic state. (X-Men v1 #134)

House of X

After the establishment of Krakoa, Mutants from around the Earth gathered to the living island that was to be their new homeland. Jason Wyngarde was one of many deceased Mutants that were brought back to life through the Resurrection Protocols with him being part of the Hellfire Trading Company. Secretly, he made a deal with Arcade to deliver Mister Sinister to him where he had tea with Essex only to poison it. Wyngrade then smuggled Sinister off Krakoa to Arcade where he then used his illusions to trick the Hellions to go on a recovery mission only to capture them as well. (Hellions v1 #9) Mastermind had reluctantly agreed to helping Arcade as the villain had taken Jason Wyngarde's daughter Regan a hostage due to unpaid debts. The captured Mister Sinister was then being used to establish a clone farm for Arcade's use where expendable clones were to be killed for entertainment in Murder World. Whilst this was happening, Mastermind used his powers to keep the Hellions trapped within highly realistic hallucinations. (Hellions v1 #10)
