Biography

Origin

Joanna Cargill was a female Mutant born in the modern age who was born the daughter of a soldier and a church going woman. She was the second child of the family with her having an older brother named Gareth who her father proud of to carry on the legacy. Joanna's father was noted to had been a soldier and it as known that he never wanted another child especially a daughter. Thus, she was considered an accident who was born premature and was too sickly and weak to help around in the house. During her childhood, her father would always hit her and be abusive to her with Joanna's mother never stopping him. Her brother joined the military but died in service with this causing Joanna's father to lash out at his daughter in a drunken rage where he blamed her for his son's death. In one such incident, he nearly beat her to death where in fear she begged him to stop which was when her powers first manifested causing her to punch back where the strength of her blow killed him. Accidentally murdering her father, she decided to flee from the family home rather than be caught in the act. (X-Men Legacy v1 #268) During an assignment early in her career, she crossed paths with the mutant thief called Gambit. The two fought and though details of this run-in have not been revealed, like many Joanna developed a love-hate relationship with the charming Remy LeBeau who she encountered professionally on several occasions. (Gambit v3 #20)

After Cargill witnessed Magneto chained and put on trial by humans, she became outraged and joined Apocalypse in the hopes of getting even with humanity. (X-Men: Legacy v1 #252) Frenzy joined Apocalypse's other lackeys as the field leader of the Alliance of Evil. When one of her teammates, Tower, failed to capture the young pyrokinetic mutant Rusty Collins under Apocalypse's orders, Frenzy decided to do the assignment herself. By contacting and trying to recruit Collins, Frenzy attracted the attention of his protectors X-Factor, who in turn forced her to flee after being overwhelmed in a heated battle. In order to keep the Alliance under his ruthless command, Apocalypse made them dependant of an external source of power. (X-Factor v1 #4) This came to be a mutant with boosting abilities called Michael Nowlan. The Alliance kept track of Nowlan's whereabouts, and Frenzy decided to kidnap his ex-wife in order to blackmail him into enhancing their powers. X-Factor, as a result of their misleading activities as mutant hunters, got involved in Nowlan's situation and attempted to rescue him, but were defeated by Frenzy and the Alliance of Evil. (X-Factor v1 #5) As Nowlan's powers were not able to disrupt Frenzy's physical abilities in the way her teammates' energy-based abilities were, she was able to subdue him easily and hand him to Apocalypse. However, after X-Factor recovered, they led the battle to Apocalypse and the Alliance of Evil were defeated and sent to prison as their employer escaped. (X-Factor v1 #6)

Frenzy and the Alliance remained in jail for several months, during which time they all had to deal with painful withdrawals. When the United States government enacted the Mutant Registration Act, Frenzy and the Alliance escaped from jail and took to the streets of New York, creating mayhem to send a message to the authorities that mutants couldn’t be contained much less forced to register against their will. Their attack was captured by the media and Frenzy spoke on the group’s behalf. She boldly added a public challenge to X-Factor to try and stop them. X-Factor and their students rose to the occasion and confronted the Alliance. Frenzy used the opportunity to once more try to recruit young Rusty Collins. Collins turned her down once again and helped X-Factor defeat the Alliance. Frenzy and her colleagues were taken into custody by Freedom Force. (X-Factor v1 #33)

After the establishment of the nation of Krakoa, all Mutants were given a home on the living island that was to be the home of their people. During this time, they were responsible for heading a reconstituted S.W.O.R.D. program that was funded by them and staffed by Mutants. Among them included Frenzy who was to serve as an ambassador in dealing with various alien races. Those she dealt with included the Skrull Paibok with the two regularly sparring with one another. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #1)

Though enveloped by Symbiotes, she was able to fight their attempt to control her and broke free from them. This came at a critical time as a Symbiote-infected Cable was under the control of Knull where he was using his powers against Eden Fesi. Frenzy freeing herself allowed her to catch Cable by surprise where she ripped off his cybernetic arm thus preventing him from using his bodyslide ability. This allowed Manifold to perform a powerful attack involving a small piece of the sun against his opponent thus freeing Cable from Knull's control after destroying the Symbiote that was corrupting him.
