Biography

Origin

Madara Uchiha (Japanese: うちは マダラ, Hepburn: Uchiha Madara) was a male human who was born in the Warring States Period in the Ninja World where he was the eldest of Tajima Uchihas five sons. During this time, he and his sibling grew up amongst the Uchiha Clan that were waging a constant war against their rivals among the Senju Clan. Three of his brothers were noted to had died young during the Warring States Period with this leaving him his younger brother Izuna as his sole remaining sibling. Their shared loss made the pair very close with them constantly competing with one another as they sought to become stronger. Possessing a naturally strong chakra, the young Madara was able to defeat adult Senju warriors in battle where he developed a reputation for being a genius. One day, he was by the river where he met another boy of his age who was known as Hashirama. The two cam to develop friendly rivalry where they often skipped stones or urinated in the river as the pair developed a kinship. Similar to Madara, Hashira was also a shinobi who had lost brothers on the battlefield with the two imaging a world where children would no longer have a need to fight one another. During their talks, the friends never revealed their family names but in time they eventually learnt that they were children of rival clans. Thus, they were bound by duty to kill each other even if they had become friends. This forced Madara to make a choice between his family and his dreams of peace. Ultimately, he decided to end his friendship with Hashirama so that he would have no reservations in killing him in the future. It was noted that his resolve was so strong that it came to awaken his Sharingan.

Over the years, Madara and Hashirama continued to battle one another. Despite his skill, Madara could never defeat Hashirama even after he attained the Mangekyō Sharingan. Meanwhile, Hashirama could not bring himself to kill someone he had considered leading to the pair engaged in a stalemate that lasted decades. In time, both Madara and Hashirama came to be leaders of their respective clans where the latter used this as an opportunity to broker peace between their clans. Madara had found the offer tempting but refused after his brother Izuna was killed at the hands of Hashirama's own brother Tobirama Senju. Despite this, he came to find that some of the Uchiha began defecting to the Senju out of self-preservation. It was in this time that Madara came to take the eyes of his dead brother Izyna in order to gain the eternal Mangekyō Sharingan thus restoring his deteriorating vision. With his new power, he waged one final attack against the Senju but came to find himself easily defeated by Hashirama. However, rather than kill Madara, Hashirama offered his own life if it could mean an end to their constant battles. Madara came to be moved by Hashirama's gesture and decided to finally accept his offer of peace.

At one point, Iwagakure sent Mū and Ōnoki to Konohagakure under the belief that Hashirama wanted an alliance between their villages. However, they came to meet Madara instead who wanted the hidden stone to completely submit to the leaf village.

The two battled to the point of exhaustion with this culminating in a final confrontation in the site that became the Valley of the End (終末の谷, Shūmatsu no Tani, English TV: Final Valley). In their fight, Hashirama in an effort to protect the hidden leaf was forced to seemingly kill his close friend Madara.

An elderly Madara later came to find the unconscious body of a young shinobi named Obito Uchiha whose body had been badly injured from a cave in. He commanded the White Zetsu to take the boy to his underground shelter where he had the entrance sealed. It was then that he replaced the damaged sections of Obito's body with parts from a White Zetsu and cells from Hashirama to promote healing. After gaining consciousness, the young Uchiha thanked Madara who revealed that he intended for Obito to repay his debt.

Return

Kabuto Yakushi came to find the remains of Madara Uchiha where he used the reanimation jutsu to return him to life in an undead state. This revealed to Yakushi that the person leading the Akatsuki was in fact not the real Madara thus securing an alliance with Tobi. Working together, the pair arranged for events of the Fourth Shinobi World War with reanimated ninja being sent against the Allied Shinobi Forces. As the conflict continued, a number of Kabuto's pawns were defeated leading to him deciding to field Madara on the battlefield. Awakening, Madara at first mistakenly believed his plan had been enacted and that the Rinne Rebirth jutsu was used to bring him to life. He was quick to learn though that the reanimation jutsu had been used instead and met Kabuto who was operating through a reanimated shinobi's body. Seeing the Allied Shinobi Forces, Madara decided to unleash his power to test his abilities after all this time where he easily overpowered them. Realising his enemies were too dangerous for him to hold back to basic ninjutsu and taijutsu, Madara pulls down a meteorite from the atmosphere. When the Kazekage and Tsuchikage successfully stop it, Madara adds a second meteorite to his attack, both of which fall upon and devastate the Fourth Division. With most of the Fourth Division dead, Madara questions Kabuto about just how far off-plan Tobi has gone. Because Kabuto doesn't actually know much about the plan, Madara is left to check things for himself and tries to summon the Nine-Tails, only to discover it's sealed in a jinchūriki, specifically Naruto. Despite knowing the current Naruto was a clone, he decided to delay his plans to test out his new powers, namely, the Wood Release: Nativity of Trees which Naruto's clone barely countered. He then moves in to finish off the remainder of the Fourth Division but is repelled by the arrival of the Fifth Hokage, the Fifth Mizukage, and the Fourth Raikage. In response, the five Kage decided to take to the field and to collectively fight against Madara Uchiha. By the time he returns, Naruto's shadow clone is gone and the five Kage remain his only opponents. They battle for some time, with Madara equaling and besting the Kage's efforts. When he is hit with the Tsuchikage's Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique, Madara's armour is torn away, revealing the implant of Hashirama's face on his chest. Madara laments Hashirama's legacy that these Kage have inherited, having been completely unimpressed by their attacks, particularly those of the Hokage, Hashirama's granddaughter. Madara then creates twenty-five copies of himself and has them each activate their Susanoo. By nightfall, the Kage are still alive and are able to pool their efforts so successfully that he is nearly sealed. Finally impressed by their display, Madara responds by summoning his perfected Susanoo. Before he can use it to kill the Kage, his Susanoo starts to fade and Madara is engulfed in light. Madara realises that Kabuto has elsewhere released him from the Impure World Reincarnation and his soul is returning to the afterlife. Madara responds by performing the hand seals to rescind the Impure World Reincarnation contract that Kabuto has over him, enabling him to return to his immortal body without further interference from a summoner. Now able to do whatever he likes and bored with the Kage, Madara decides to go find Naruto and reclaim the Nine-Tails with the Kage trying to block his escape.

After defeating the five Kage, Madara finds and reunites with Obito while he's engaged in combat with Naruto, Killer B, Kakashi Hatake, and Might Guy. Madara notices the Demonic Statue undergoing a premature transformation into the Ten-Tails and scolds Obito for being too hasty. After Obito returns Madara's gunbai, Madara creates a wood dragon in an attempt to capture Naruto and Killer B and complete the Ten-Tails. He at one point manages to restrain and drain B of his energy but is overwhelmed by Guy's Daytime Tiger. The Ten-Tails is revived before he can recover, forcing Madara to make do. He and Obito leap onto the Ten-Tails' head and connect themselves to it, granting them control of its actions. Their four opponents put up a resistance but are no match for the Ten-Tails' power. Before the Ten-Tails can finish them off, however, the combined Allied Shinobi Forces arrive to join the fight, with Ino managing to control Obito into redirecting the Ten-Tails' attack. The Allies are able to immobilise the Ten-Tails, making it an easy target. The Ten-Tails undergoes a new transformation before their attacks can connect, freeing it and letting it block the incoming attacks. Though the immediate problem is solved, Madara realises there's another issue: the Allies are being coordinated too effectively. He and Obito direct the Ten-Tails to attack the distant Allied HQ, something that takes several Tailed Beast Balls due to their lack of control, which Madara attributes to Obito's failure to revive him correctly. Although the Allies' 'brain' was killed, the Allies are given one final battle plan in the time it takes the Ten-Tails to hit its target. Obito and Madara try to thin the Allies' numbers before they can get into position and, when that fails, block against the oncoming attack, but the combined forces manage to break through and separate Obito and Madara from the Ten-Tails. With the Ten-Tails now out of their control they must fight the Alliance directly. Obito eventually disappears to the other dimension, forcing Madara to fend for himself. During Obito's absence, Madara senses that Hashirama has elsewhere been brought back to life. Excited at the prospect of fighting his rival again, Madara eagerly awaits his arrival. When he arrives, Hashirama sends only a wood clone to face him, being too busy restraining the Ten-Tails. Madara decides to sit out the fight until the real Hashirama is ready. When the wood clone persists, Madara easily defeats it. Madara later senses Obito's return to the battlefield and decides to make use of one of his fail-safes, activating black receivers planted in Obito to force him to finally revive Madara. Obito came to resist and instead sealed the Ten-Tails into himself. Though he's frustrated by this setback, Hashirama is no longer preoccupied, so Madara forces him into a fight for two reasons: his simple desire to fight his rival once again and he also plans to oppose Obito and take his place as the caster of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. To accomplish the latter however, Madara needs senjutsu chakra, which Hashirama has. As their battle rages, Hashirama tries to convince Madara to postpone, but Madara repeatedly refuses. Nevertheless, he keeps track of Obito's progress and growing control of the Ten-Tails' power.

With Obito defeated, Madara decided to finally act where he had Black Zetsu take over the Uchiha's body. This prevented him from using the Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to restore the slain ninja of the Shinobi Alliance and instead use it to restore Madara fully to life. With his body restored, he came to be at the full height of his powers though his reanimated eyes came to wither away. Despite being blind, he was more than powerful enough to deal with his opponents with White Zetsu providing him one of his original Rinnegan eyes that Obito had kept hidden away. Looking to recover his other eye, he made a desperate move that led to him stealing the Sharingan from Kakashi Hatake. With it, he was able to teleport himself into the Kamui dimension where he arrived just in time to prevent Sakura Haruno from destroying the Rinnegan in Obito's eyes. In desperation, Obito had sent Sakura back into the normal world leaving himself at the mercy of Madara. Madara then reclaimed the eye thus restoring himself to the height of his powers where his body healed from all his recent injuries. With its power, he came to drain the sage chakra from the reanimated Hashirama and badly injured Sasuke Uchiha when the young shinobi attacked him. It was then that he looked to acquire the Tailed-Beasts again who resisted him though Madara came to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and unleashed chains that began to consume the creatures. Madara goes after the freed tailed beasts so that he can revive the Ten-Tails once more. He attempts to take on all nine at once, failing and losing his right arm in the process. While he regroups, a White Zetsu clone brings him one of his Rinnegan that Obito kept in storage. Madara takes this and one of the Zetsu's arms, allowing him start round two. He summons the Demonic Statue from Obito's body and uses Limbo: Border Jail to repel the nine beasts. Before they can recover, he seals all of them into the Demonic Statue, including those sealed in Naruto and B. While the Statue undergoes its transformation into the Ten-Tails again, Madara asks the Zetsu clone how Black Zetsu is faring with taking his remaining Rinnegan back from Obito. Tobirama Senju, having been reincarnated alongside Hashirama, attacks Madara immediately afterwards, but is restrained after failing to deal any damage. Sasuke also attacks Madara but is immobilised in midair. Having already warned Sasuke once, Madara turns Sasuke's own sword against him and stabs him in the chest. With nobody left to oppose him, Madara seals the Ten-Tails into himself once its resurrection is complete. Pleased with himself, Madara sets off to regain his other Rinnegan. Along the way he spits out the Benihisago and Kohaku no Jōhei, Obito having used both as part of his premature revival method.

When he arrives at Black Zetsu's location, he discovers that Obito has regained control of his body. Madara tries to reason with Obito, reminding him of all they planned and insisting on the impending effectiveness of the Eye of the Moon Plan. Rather than be convinced, Obito stabs Madara and manages to steal fragments of the One-Tail's and Eight-Tails' chakra from him before using Kamui to escape with Naruto. While Madara contemplates his next move, he is confronted by Might Guy, a master of taijutsu, which is one of the only effective attacks against Madara in his new form. Guy opens all Eight Gates and hits Madara with the Evening Elephant. Madara is taken by surprise and tries to defend himself, but other Allied Shinobi are able to reduce him to a single Truth-Seeking Ball, leaving him wide open. Madara is thrilled at the prospect of such a challenging fight, and visibly battered but not beaten, forcing Guy to use Night Guy. Madara is nearly killed by the attack, which obliterates the entire left side of his body. Thanking Guy for giving him such an entertaining battle, and acknowledging him as a worthy opponent, Madara decides to show him the ultimate respect by killing him instead of letting him succumb to his injuries. However, the Truth-Seeking Ball that Madara launches at Guy is kicked back at him by a revived Naruto, whom Madara notes has somehow gained power similar to his own. Naruto sends Madara crashing through the recreation of the Ten-Tails in its giant tree form, a remnant of Obito's earlier battle. A voice speaks to Madara, telling him to absorb it. Madara does so and becomes stronger, but is met with a new problem: Sasuke, also healed from his injuries, has joined forces with Naruto and is also in possession of new abilities. Despite Madara's efforts, he can do nothing against them. Knowing he needs his other Rinnegan if he's to end the fight, Madara steals Kakashi Hatake's Mangekyō Sharingan and uses it to go after Obito. He stops Sakura Haruno from destroying the Rinnegan, to which Obito responds by sending her back to the real world before Madara can kill her. However, Obito himself is too weak to fight back. To give Obito some final words, Madara first congratulates him for removing the Forbidden Individual Curse Tag he had placed on him. He also reveals his role in the death of Rin Nohara, in doing so admitting that he's been manipulating Obito from the start. With that, Madara takes back his Rinnegan, returning to Obito his left Mangekyō Sharingan. Black Zetsu uses Obito's body to perform Kamui and return them to the real world. Naruto and Sasuke move to attack him as soon as Madara appears, so Madara delays them with multiple Chibaku Tensei. Madara gains proximity to the moon, awakening the Rinne Sharingan in the process, and succeeded in casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

The entire world came to be trapped in a dream state and then wrapped into Madara's God: Nativity of a World of Trees. Sasuke was able to save Naruto, Kakashi, and Sakura from the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Seeing them, Madara announced himself the world's saviour, one who has saved the world from itself by replacing the hells of reality with the heavens of dreams. While he was proclaiming his victory, Black Zetsu stabbed him in the back where his seemingly loyal ally revealed that it was not Madara's will, but rather that of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. In fact, his service to Madara had been done so that he could take advantage of the Uchiha in order to bring about her revival. Black Zetsu transferred from Obito's body to Madara's, completely covering him and forcing him to start absorbing the chakra of those trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi. After dramatically increasing in size, Madara shrank down until a revived Kaguya was revealed in his stead. Naruto and Sasuke eventually seal Kaguya in her own dimension, along with Black Zetsu, at which point she reverts into the Ten-Tails and spits out Madara. The Sage of the Six Paths summons Madara and everyone else back to the real world, but he can do nothing to save Madara from his approaching death as a result of having both the tailed beasts and Demonic Statue removed from his body. Madara uses his remaining time speaking to Hashirama, noting that his own dream for peace has died while Hashirama's lives on, and therefore was apparently the better of the two. Hashirama replies that they are still friends despite everything, to which Madara agrees as he died.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Madara Uchiha was a fair-skinned man with spiky, black hair that had a slight blue tint to it. In his childhood, his hair was chin-length that parted to frame the sides of his face. In his old age, Madara became extremely worn and emaciated, with his hair turned thin and white, and lost all his teeth. When Madara was reincarnated his body's youth was restored, albeit with the generic effect of gaining grey sclerae and minor cracks all over his body. These disappear once he was properly revived. After becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Madara gained the appearance of an Ōtsutsuki; having white hair pale skin, and he became enveloped by a cloak of chakra that manifests into physical clothing: a full-bodied black garment with black pants, gloves, and boots, over which he wore a flowing white robe with six black magatama markings across his chest and the familiar pattern of a black Rinnegan and nine black magatama markings in rows of three on his back. A grey horn-like protrusions grew out of his left temple and overlapped his forehead akin to a protector with an upward-curve on the right temple, giving him an overall appearance very similar to that of the Sage of the Six Paths. After absorbing the recreated Ten-Tails produced by Obito, Madara obtained additional black magatama markings around his sleeve cuffs and the rim of his robe. He reverts to his former appearance after the Ten-Tails is removed from his body. He came to be known by a number of titles that included the Second Six Paths (二人目の六道, Futarime no Rikudō), the Saviour of this World (この世の救世主, Kono Yo no Kyūseishu) and as the Ghost of the Uchiha (うちはの亡霊, Uchiha no Bōrei).

He was shown to enjoy fighting and took great joy in battling opponents. According to him, it was not a battle unless there was blood involved and a raging heart. As a reanimation, he showed little concern with dying as he was confident about being revived through the jutsu. After his resurrection, he became somewhat reckless in fights but this was because he was reliant on the advanced healing ability of his body.

His concept of peace was shown to had differed greatly from that of Hashirama. Hashirama was shown to had envisioned cooperation with the other newly-formed villages whilst Madara desired control so the peace could never be lost. He believed that the modern world as dreamt by Hashirama was flawed as it suffered from the paradox of people wanting peace yet desiring war at the same time. Ultimately, he felt that the world was a hell with nothing waiting for people beyond pain, suffering and despair. He felt that passion and love were the cause of endless conflict. To end this, he came to create the Eye of the Moon Plan (月の眼計画, Tsuki no Me Keikaku, English TV: Project "Tsuki no Me") whereby he looked to create an Infinite Tsukuyomi over the entire world leaving all of its inhabitants trapped in a dream state.

According to himself, the name 'Madara' was a term meant as a person who rejected the world. Thus, it applied to anyone who upheld this thought in their heart and strived to achieve the Infinite Tsukoyomi. He believed that the world created by the Sage of the Six Paths had failed and Madara intended to create a new world that would overcome that. The Infinite Tsukoyomi was intended to produce a dream world thus ending the constant struggles in the Ninja World. He believed that Obito shared this vision and was thus Madara as well. He believed that he was a saviour that would bring about a change in the world.

Hashirama had believed that despite being ruthless and manipulative by nature that Madara was his core was a kind man. It was said that the reason he embarked on his path in life stemmed from a deep desire to protect his family and loved ones.

Madara was the eldest of five siblings though three of them had died young leaving him to be close to his last remaining brother Izuna Uchiha (うちはイズナ, Uchiha Izuna). He and his sole surviving brother came to be close siblings due to the shared loss they had experienced in their lives. This also saw them becoming competitive with one another as they each looked to become stronger. It was said that Sasuke Uchiha came to remind Madara of his younger brother which led to him attempting to enlist the youth into his cause.

In his youth, he came to meet and befriend Hashirama Senju (千手柱間, Senju Hashirama) who became his closest friend as well as rival. The two came to dream together of a more peaceful world where they wanted an end to conflict. At first, they faced conflict due to being from opposing clans but Hashirama made an effort to help end the hostilities between them. During the course of their lives, the two often engaged in contests with one another where Hashirama was often the winner of these matches. Madara himself would admit that Hashirama was a superior shinobi when compared to himself. Despite being friends, their approach to end the cycle of violence greatly differed leading to the two eventually becoming enemies.

In his old age, he came to enlist the aid of a young Obito Uchiha (うちはオビト, Uchiha Obito) after saving his life. He came to twist the younger Uchiha's mind where the two came to share the same goals and intentions for the world. Thus, the two began to serve as allies with Obito tasked with ensuring Madara's resurrection. Despite that, he did not trust the youth and made arrangements to betray him to ensure the furthering of his own plans. He came to be prepared to battle Obito in order to depower him and also had Black Zetsu waiting to take control of him to force the Uchiha youth to bring about Madara's resurrection.

He came to be so impressed with Sasuke that a part of him wished that the youth had been born years earlier so that Madara could have recruited him instead of Obito.

He was noted for being a reincarnation of Indra Osutsuki (大筒木インドラ, ‎Ōtsutsuki Indora).

Powers and abilities

Madara Uchiha was a human born with the ability to manipulate Chakra and use it to achieve various feats. It was said that he was born with very powerful chakra with these reserves being so large that it allowed him to fight non-stop for a 24 hour period before collapsing. He was noted for being the most gifted shinobi in history and recognised at the strongest member of the Uchiha clan during his life time. This was to the extent that he was one of the contenders for being the God of Shinobi.

He had a Sharingan (写輪眼, literally meaning: Copy Wheel Eye, meaning (Viz): Mirror Wheel Eye) Dōjutsu in his eyes that were awakened in his childhood with a tomoe in both of them. By adulthood, this had fully developed into a Mangekyō Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, literally meaning: Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye) and was nearly constantly active with his mastery over it surpassing any other member of the clan. Such was his talent that with it he could tell the difference between a real person and a shadow or wood clone. Even with a brief eye contact, Madara was able to place a person under a genjutsu and either paralyse them or relay information. The strength of his Sharingan was enough to allow him to even trap the Nine-Tails and summon it as a tool in combat. Uchiha was able to also program one of his eyes to activate the Izanagi after his death thus allowing him to alter reality and resurrect himself.

The infusion of Hashirama's DNA into his body led to the evolution of his Sharingan into the more evolved Rinnegan (輪廻眼, literally meaning: Saṃsāra Eye). According to himself, he had only awakened the Rinnegan shortly before his death. This allowed him to use the Six Paths Technique (六道の術, Rikudō no Jutsu) and all its resultant techniques. Among these included using the Preta Path in order to absorb chakra which made him a dangerous opponent as he was able to absorb the energy of a jutsu thus making it powerless against him.

Among the techniques that were known to him included:

  • Summoning Technique (口寄せの術, Kuchiyose no Jutsu) : a transportation technique where he was able to summon a target to his location after a contract was formed with blood. Madara was able to use this to bring forth the Nine-Tails to him unless it was already sealed within a Jinchūriki host.
  • Fire Release (火遁, Katon, English TV: Fire Style) : Madara was skilled in the use of this technique that was one of the five basic nature transformations that was commonly made by the Tiger hand seal.
    • Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation (火遁・豪火滅却, Gōka Mekkyaku, TV Translation: Fire Style: Majestic Destroyer Flame) : the pinnacle of the Uchiha fire style jutsu where Madara converted his chakra into fire which he expelled from his mouth into a sea of flames that had a significant range.
    • Fire Release: Great Fire Destruction (火遁・豪火滅失, Katon: Gōka Messhitsu) :
    • Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique (火遁・豪火球の術, Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu) :
    • Fire Release: Hiding in Ash and Dust Technique (火遁・灰塵隠れの術, Katon: Haijingakure no Jutsu) :
  • Storm Release (嵐遁, Ranton, Viz: "Gale Style" or "Storm Style") : a nature transformation kekkei genkai that was a combination of lightning and water.
  • Wood Release (木遁, Mokuton, Viz: Wood Style) : a nature transformation kekkei genkai that was a combination of earth and water. He acquired full use of this jutsu in his reincarnated body that had Hashirama's cells within it. Madara's skill allowed him to use Wood Release on a similar level as Hashirama himself.
  • Limbo (輪墓, Rinbo, Literally meaning: Wheel Grave) : a skill that utilised the Rinnegan whereby he was able to manipulate the invisible world that coexisted with the physical realm. The Rinnegan allowed Madara to create a shadow of himself existing within Limbo that had all his abilities but had the advantage of being not being able to being touched or seen. He could only manifest a single Limbo shadow with one Rinnegan but with two of the mystical eyes he could summon four such copies. Each could strike his foes, defend him or perform any number of techniques that were known to him. After a set amount of time, the shadows needed to return to him and reform.
  • Susanoo (須佐能乎, Susanoo) :
  • Chibaku Tensei (地爆天星, Chibaku Tensei, TV Translation: Catastrophic Planetary Devastation) : he was able to create black spheres that could be sent high in the sky where it began drawing in rubble from various sources to create massive mounds of rock. Madara was shown to use them as projectiles that he sent crashing onto the battlefield to annihilate his enemies. Such was his power that he could produce multiple such massive rocks and even send them colliding into one another to generate powerful explosions.

After his reincarnation, his body was modified by Kabuto Yakushi to be beyond his physical and combat prime. Part of this involved the grafting of a pale replica of Hashirama's face onto Madara's left pectoral area. The addition of this allowed him to heal most of his injuries within seconds and allowed him to also use the Wood Release technique. When suffering from severe injuries, he could replace lost limbs with a material from a White Zetsu's body. According to him, the purpose of the jutsu was for the reanimated shinobi to die upon unleashing a powerful attack that would destroy them and their enemy. As such, he was able to release attacks that would destroy his body only for it to reform afterwards. Such was his skill that he was able to nullify the commands of the reanimation jutsu performed on him thus releasing himself from the casters control. Ultimately, he was not at his full power until he was restored fully to life through the Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique (外道 輪廻天生の術 (Gedō — Rinne Tensei no Jutsu). He had incredibly regenerating abilities as a result of the changes to his body. This meant that he was able to heal from his wounds and regrow entire limbs and even his lower body so long as he was still alive.

Using the Rinnegan, he was able to produce Black Receivers (黒き受信器, Kuroki Jushinki) that were black rods that could disrupt or conduct chakra.

A weapon of choice wielded by him was the Gunbai Uchiwa (軍配団扇, Gunbai Uchiwa, literally meaning: army arrangement fan) that was a non-folding fan carved from a unique spirit tree. The Gunbai had been passed down between Uchiha clansmen for generations. With it, he could perform the Uchiha Return (うちは返し, Uchihagaeshi) that was able to block an incoming attack where it nullified the strike by converting the incoming chakra into Wind nature transformation and reflected it back on the attacker.

Madara was a member of the Uchiha Clan (うちは一族, Uchiha Ichizoku) who were a highly skilled family of ninjas.
