She would later travel to both England and America where she continued her education. (X-Men: Blind Science v1 #1)

At some point, she was noted to had attended a cloning seminar in Berlin where she met Hank McCoy. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #2)

During Rao's study of the Mutant gene, she came to conclude that it did not represent the next stage of evolution but rather was more akin to a disease. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #1) This led to her believing that there was a way of curing the affliction and turning Mutants back into normal humans that could have a second chance at life. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #2)

Kavita dedicated herself to curing the Legacy Virus, a lethal disease plaguing the mutant community, but failed despite being close to a cure. The disease was cured by Hank McCoy. A few weeks later, the alien Ord of the Breakworld who came to her and offered her significant amounts of data, that could have helped her cure the virus, had she received it in time. Rao attempted to direct him to Hank McCoy, but since McCoy was a mutant, Ord did not believe that he would be objective in achieving Ord's supposed goal which was 'curing' the mutant gene. Alongside Abigail Brand of S.W.O.R.D., he presented her the case of Tildie Soames. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #6) The mutant girl whose power to physically manifest her own nightmares had inadvertently caused the death of her parents and a police officer. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #2) The case convinced Rao to aid accept Ord's aid and begin work on developing a mutant cure, under the understanding that no one would be hurt in the process. Unbeknownst to her, Ord's true motives were to remove mutantkind from the equation, due to a prophecy predicting that a mutant, most likely an X-Man, would destroy Breakworld. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #6)

Old Man Logan and his team of X-Men captured a Weapon X scientist named Doctor Alba who was creating living weapons designed to kill Mutants with her being left in the care of the X-Club. (Weapon X v3 #11)

Personality and attributes

When she was younger, she had a passion for knowledge, a talent for hypothesis and a youthful certainty that she would change the world. (X-Men: Blind Science v1 #1)

She came to be regarded as a renowned geneticist. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #1) Hank McCoy regarded her as one of the greatest geneticists alive and not one prone to making pranks. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #2)

Rao at first did not see Mutants as the next step in evolution nor were they the end of mankind. Instead, she viewed the mutant gene as a corruption of healthy cellular activity and as a disease. Thus, she believed that Mutants were simply afflicted with such a condition that needed to be cured. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #1) Dr. Rao believed that the Mutant strain could be eliminated in a safe and irreversible manner thus giving the bearer a second chance at life. Kavita held no malice towards Mutants as she believed that there were people whose lives were destroyed by unwanted mutation and she intended to give her life to helping them. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #2)

Powers and abilities

The 'cure' came in a liquid form for intramuscular injection. A single use or injection provides permanent effects. The cure appears to suppress any effects of the X-Gene. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #4)

For a time, she came to work at BeneTech Laboratories that were looking to provide a cure to the Mutant gene. (Astonishing X-Men v3 #2)

  • Kavita Rao was created by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday where she made her first appearance in Astonishing X-Men v3 #1 (July, 2004).

Television

  • In Wolverine and the X-Men, a Dr. Rao made an appearance in the episode "Battle Lines" where she was voiced by actress Susan Dalian. She was shown as being a scientist in the employ of the Mutant Response Division and assigned to one of their facilities where she worked at a highly classified laboratory holding the Mutant Tildie Soames. Mystique disguised as Colonel Moss entered the laboratory and attempted to forcibly get Dr. Rao to open the stasis tank holding Tildie. However, Dr. Rao stated no one had clearance to do so whereupon Mystique knocked the scientist unconscious.
