Ken Wheatley was the leader of the mercenaries hired by Sir Benjamin Lockwood to rescue dinosaurs from Isla Nublar before it was destroyed by the erupting Mt. Sibo. In reality, Wheatley was taking his instructions from Lockwood's aide Eli Mills without Lockwood's knowledge. His real mission was to capture as many dinosaurs as possible, transporting from the doomed island to Lockwood's estate for a secret auction. His men also recovered a DNA sample from the Indominus rex in the form of a rib bone, which Dr. Henry Wu used to create the Indoraptor.

A cruel man, he took teeth from every dinosaur he and his men successfully captured. His men tranquilized and captured Blue the Velociraptor, although she was grievously injured when one of the mercenaries she attacked shot her with his sidearm, forcing Wheatley to abduct paleo-veterinarian Dr. Zia Rodriguez in order to treat the wounded raptor. Owen Grady, Claire Dearing and Franklin Webb were intentionally abandoned by the mercenaries on the island as the volcano was erupting.

The three managed to sneak aboard the mercenaries' ship, the Arcadia, as it set sail, although Owen and Claire were captured by Wheatley once the ship docked in California. Wheatley didn't participate in the auctioning of the dinosaurs. After an escaped Owen and Claire created chaos by releasing a Stygimoloch, Wheatley saw everyone running from the auction room and went in, where he found the room seemingly deserted except for the Indoraptor in its cage.

Wheatley had been kept out of the loop regarding Dr. Wu's work with the Indominus rex DNA his men had recovered, and so he had no idea what the Indoraptor was. He shot the hybrid with two darts from his tranquilizer rifle and entered its cage, intending to collect one of its teeth. However, the dinosaur wasn't fully tranquilized. Awakening, it bit off and ate Wheatley's arm, then attacked him and tore him apart as a hiding Gunnar Eversol watched from nearby.
