History

Knowhere was a giant space station that was actually the severed head of one of the Celestials. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1) Its origins were traced to the beginning of the universe when life first began to form with this being spearheaded by the efforts of the Celestials. Their activities though drew the ire of a primordial being known as Knull who sought to end this new existence and thus waged a war against the light. He came to slay one of the cosmic beings and used its head as a forge which he used to fashion the Necrosword with this leading to the creation of the parasitic Symbiotes. (Venom v4 #4)

People came to Knowhere to study and inspect in order to observe the end of the universe from the closest available platform. (Nova v4 #8)

Currently, the station was being used as headquarters for the Guardians of the Galaxy and was facilitated by both Cosmo and Richard Rider. (Inside Look: Guardians of the Galaxy #1 by DnA, Broken Frontier, May 21, 2008])

During the Skrull Secret Invasion, a group of them struck at Knowhere where they detonated a bomb at the Continuum Cortex leading to the death of several beings along with damaging the teleportation mechanism. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #4) A Shi'ar warbird was docked at Knowhere when a fight broke out in Starlin's Bar with the Guardians of the Galaxy during the War of Kings. The Guardians later intervened in the conflict in order to stop the fighting between the Shi'ar/Kree as it threatened to damage the fabric of reality. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #13) During the War of Kings, the Inhumans pursued the Guardians of the Galaxy to Knowhere where they attacked after Crystal was taken hostage by Phyla-Vell. At the same time, the Imperial Guard arrived as they were in pursuit of Adam Warlock with the Kree and Shi'ar forces battling one another. After Crystal was recovered, the Inhuman Elite retreated back to their homeworld whilst the Shi'ar decided to take over Knowhere. Before they could fortify it, the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy arrived back at the station forcing the Shi'ar to flee back to their own territory. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #15)

Around this time, the Universal Church of Truth were allowed a mission to be held on Knowhere. Despite agreements in place, the Luminals dispatched one of their own into the Fault to investigate it where Massdriver became infected by a creature from the Cancerverse. The parasitic entity burst from her body on Knowhere where it attempted to find a new host. The Guardians and the Luminals sought to destroy the creature but adherents from the Universal Church of Truth arrived who sought to claim it as they thought it was a god. Afterwards, the Matriarch and the U.C.T. arrived to claim the creature who was residing within the body of Moondragon. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #21) To rescue Moondragon, Star-Lord used Cosmo's tesseract storage space to transport the stations entire population into it allowing him to commandeer the facility. He then had it teleport over the U.C.T. world of Orison where Moondragon was being held allowing the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Luminals to stage a rescue. The Church was driven off the planet and Moondragon was rescued whereupon Knowhere was returned to its previous location. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #22)

Knowhere was later taken over by Hela and the Black Order who used it as a staging area to attack Sanctuary II. The ship was being used by Starfox to dictate the will of his brother the Mad Titan Thanos who recently been slain. (Guardians of the Galaxy v5 #1)

Overview

Knowhere's location made it a perfect location for an interdimensional crossroads as well as an observatory for the End of the Universe as it bordered along The Rip. It also served as a port of call for various intergalactic travellers and has since been protected by its chief of security, Cosmo the Spacedog. In addition, it possessed minor facilities for closer observations of the end of the universe as well as a main hall, marketplace, and a bar called Starlin's. Travellers at the station were required to wear Cosmo's special "passport" bracelets which allowed instant teleportation to and from anywhere in the universe. This was accomplished through the Celestial heads "Continuum Cortex" that was located near its brain-stem through which sensors detected subtle disturbances in space-time that occured in the vicinity of The Rip.

People came to the Knowhere due to its location being by the Rip and was where space as well as time met along with all the dimensions of reality. It meant that people came from all of space and time along with all kinds of species. (Nova v4 #8) As such, it served as an interdimensional crossroads that was a meeting place or nexus that was adrift in The Rip on the outer edges of space-time. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1)

Though deceased, the Celestial's cerebellum contained a dormant brain core with certain ghost functions still maintaining it. It was able to keep aware of events within itself which could be sensed through its thoughts. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #5) Through the Continuum Cortex, rapid transit was capable of going anywhere in the universe through the use of the wearers 'passport' bracelets. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1)

It was headed by an administrative council headed by an elected chairperson who was supported by a deputy and had its own laws. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #4) A group of vigilantes called the Knowhere Corps operated who sought to ensure order was maintained. (Guardians of the Galaxy v4 #5)

Knowhere was held as being a scientific community with delegations from hundreds of races gathering at the place. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #4)

We run with these things and develop them together. It's hard to pin down where exactly they originate."
  • In regards to history of the floating Celestial head, it was said in Lost In Space: Nova #9 "A mystery that will have to wait for now, but it's a biggie!"
