History
Origin
The Licensed Extra-Governmental Interstellar Operatives Network (L.E.G.I.O.N.) was an interstellar law enforcement body that was created by the Coluan Vril Dox. It was created after his incarceration by the Computer Tyrants of Colu who had sent him to the Alliance. Dox later returned to his homeworld and freed his people from the tyranny of the artificial intelligences that ruled it. At this point, the Green Lantern Corps had disbanded and Dox came to conclude that order was needed in the universe to prevent tragedies from occurring in the future. Thus, he sought to create an interstellar police force to manage dangers in the cosmos.(L.E.G.I.O.N. v1 #4) When Dox was incapacitated, his comrades led by Lyrissa Mallor continued in the formation of the galactic police organization with the people of Cairn heralding Vril as a hero and signed up to sub-let his policing units. (L.E.G.I.O.N. v1 #9)
L.E.G.I.O.N.
Dox, the son of the Coluan tyrant Brainiac, was a prisoner in the intergalactic detention center known as Starlag. While there, he gathered together several other disparate prisoners and led a jailbreak and escaped from Starlag. These volunteers assisted Dox in overthrowing the computer tyrants of his home world Colu. Their success inspired them to liberate other worlds. Along the way, they partnered with the galactic bounty hunter Lobo and together they overthrew the cartel of drug lords that dominated the planet Cairn. It was here that Dox's L.E.G.I.O.N. was first established.
His fellow outcasts formed the elite inner circle and the military arm was made up of dedicated officers from Cairn's security forces. L.E.G.I.O.N.'s influence quickly began to grow. However, their services did not come free of charge. They established an ever-growing network of client worlds that desperately needed help and did not have the benefit of assistance from the Green Lantern Corps or even the Darkstars. As the L.E.G.I.O.N.'s power base increased in size, so too did it's inner circle. New members included the likes of Earth adventurer, Captain Comet, the time-displaced Phase and the warrior-like Lady Quark.
At one point, L.E.G.I.O.N. member Stealth fell victim to a violent mating urge - one that resulted in the (temporary) death of her commanding officer Vril Dox. Dox's consciousness was preserved however and implanted into a clone fetus. Stealth gave birth to Dox's child, Lyrl.
Dox and his compatriots came to shut down the largest criminal organization in the spiral arm of the galaxy leading to the reconstitution of L.E.G.I.O.N. (L.E.G.I.O.N. v1 #39)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
