Biography

Origin

Blaze in Superman v2 #47.

Lady Blaze was a female demon who was the daughter of the champion Vlarem and an unknown demon from Hell with her being the sister of Lord Satanus. Vlarem had been empowered by the Gods to fight injustice in the lands long ago where he performed many deeds that got him the praise of the people. One such night, he met a woman where he was blinded by lust and slept with her only to realise too late that she was a demon from the netherworld. Taking her true form, she fled back to Hell and had become pregnant with Vlarem's children that were Lady Blaze and Lord Satanus. The gods banished the demoness and her spawn, but punished Shazam for his hubris, reminding him that although he had the power of gods he still had the failings of a mortal. The aged Shazam traveled to Egypt during the reign of Rameses II to find a successor. He chose the pharaoh's son Teth-Adam, impressed by his strength and decency. Shazam gave him his powers, but unbeknownst to him, his daughter Blaze conspired with the Egyptian deity Set, and Adam’s powers were stolen from the Egyptian pantheon. Despite Blaze’s interference, Mighty Adam turned out to be a worthy champion and successor. Shazam left Egypt, secure in his choice. Many years later Blaze seduced Adam, convincing him to take over as pharaoh. Shazam realized that his protégé had become corrupted, and confronted him. He drained the power of the Egyptian gods into a scarab, and the depowered Adam died due to accelerated natural aging. Shazam came to bury Adam and the scarab at Abu Simbel. (Power of Shazam! v1 #10)

Lucifer came to assemble the lords of Hell which included Blaze in order to show them the work of Spectre, the Wrath of God, and said his mission of bloody vengeance was nudging humans to stay on the straight and narrow out of fear. He told the lords they each got a chance to destroy Specter, with whoever succeeded being elevated in Hell's hierarchy. (Spectre v3 #25) Many years later, Shazam came to move to America with Blaze following his trail where she planned to negate any good he did as she'd been trying to do for millennia. She posed as a human criminal, and rose up in the ranks of the underworld. Shazam vowed to fight back by brining back Ibis from the grave to combat her. Blaze unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins on Fawcett City. Shazam combated them with his heroes Spy Smasher, Minute-Man, Mr. Scarlet, Bulletman and Bulletgirl. Shazam used a spell of containment to trap the Sins inside ridiculous statues, and he kept them for safekeeping at the Rock of Eternity. Ibis cast a spell of protection over Fawcett City to keep all demonic influence out. Blaze was an up-and-comer in Hell, asserting her absolute dominance of the Netherworld, and ignoring the presence of other royal members of Hell's Hierarchy. She was the self-proclaimed 'ultimate deceiver', and enjoyed nothing more than manipulating and corrupting mortals, sometimes giving them dark gifts, but always claiming their souls when they died. (Power of Shazam! v1 #12)

Lady Blaze first appeared manipulating events from the shadows, presenting herself in the guise of a nightclub owner in Metropolis while secretly using her establishment as a front for her infernal schemes. From this position she gathered souls, ensnaring mortals through temptation and vice, drawing them deeper under her control. Blaze exerted influence over her patrons, subtly binding them to her will and feeding her own power by harvesting their corruption. Her activities were revealed when Superman confronted the disturbances connected to her nightclub, forcing Blaze to reveal her demonic nature and engage him directly, employing hellfire and sorcery to battle him. (Action Comics v1 #655) Blaze escalated her activities, openly challenging Superman by threatening the souls of Metropolis’s innocent citizens. She conjured illusions and crafted hellish constructs to disorient her foes, attempting to trap Superman in a realm of her own design. Blaze summoned lesser demons under her command to attack him and struck at his vulnerabilities by targeting civilians, testing the limits of his ability to protect others while fighting her directly. Her actions revealed her penchant for mixing psychological torment with raw supernatural assault, leveraging both to exhaust her opponent. Despite her power, Superman was able to resist her manipulations and repel her attacks, forcing her to retreat back to her infernal domain. (Action Comics v1 #656) When Blaze resurfaced again, she expanded her influence beyond Metropolis, seeking to draw greater power from her connections to Hell itself. She manifested in a blaze of hellfire, physically clashing with Superman while also attempting to drag him into her realm. Her attacks consisted of waves of magical flame, demonic strength, and an array of conjured minions to keep him off balance. Blaze also attempted to bargain, offering Faustian deals in exchange for compliance, demonstrating her preference for manipulation as much as brute power. Ultimately, her activities in this appearance cemented her as both a mystical adversary and a direct physical threat, capable of confronting even Superman on both magical and martial levels. (Superman v2 #48)

For a time, she coveted the Rock of Eternity as she wanted its dimensional access to increase her reach. However, she embarked on another plot in gaining control over the Tower of Fate. (Power of Shazam! v1 #10) Sinclair Batson came to Fawcett City to rebuild the skyline, and Blaze could not let that happen. In her human guise, she hired Ibac to blow up his new WayneTech facility. Ibac succeeded, but she was disappointed because an officer died in the blast, and she had told him no one was supposed to die. Ibac tried to hit on her, and she reminded him that he was taking liberties with his better. (Power of Shazam! v1 #1) Blaze sent Captain Marvel a vision herself in full demonic glory, and all of all the people he had failed to save. Billy had long agonized over his fear that as a child he was not ready for the manly job of superhero. (Power of Shazam! v1 #2) Miss Sarah Primm, the nanny of Mary Marvel, died, and was sent to Blaze’s netherworld. Blaze expected her to beg for mercy, but Sarah said the bad she had done outweighed the good, and she accepted her punishment, which Blaze found refreshing. Blaze set some winged demons upon her, and schemed of a way to use Primm to get her brother Black Adam into her schemes. (Power of Shazam! v1 #5) In her human persona Blaze met with 'Muscles' McGinnis, the new leader of Fawcett’s underworld. He was actually an undercover agent, and he was excited but somewhat frightened at getting to meet someone as high up as Blaze, and his fear increased when he caught a glimpse of her in her office mirror, and for a moment saw her true form. She showed him a picture of Sinclair Batson, who was building a casino in Fawcett, and told 'Muscles' that if he killed Batson she would make his wildest dreams come true. (Power of Shazam! v1 #6) Theo Adam broke out of prison, and Blaze approached him, twelling him she could restore his voice, and thus his ability to transform into Black Adam, for a price. (Power of Shazam! v1 #8)

After Blaze restored Black Adam’s powers, she took him to the Rock of Eternity, having retraced Shazam’s route when he visited her brother Satanus. Blaze and Adam easily defeated the wizard. Blaze wanted to destroy Shazam’s beloved Fawcett City, so she freed the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man that Shazam trapped decades ago, allowing them to once again roam the world. As Blaze dragged Shazam to her realm he tried to cast a spell, and she mocked him for his feeble state. (Power of Shazam! v1 #9) Blaze tortured Shazam, and mocked him for giving the wisdom of Solomon to Billy Batson. He knew that Shazam was in Hades, and when he heard Earth’s superheroes were battling Neron he joined them, assuming Neron was Shazam’s abductor. She had only hatred for her father, his human blood kept her from the upper echelon of Hell, but she wanted the Rock of Eternity for its dimensional access, and she planned to free the Three Faces of Evil. Blaze soon grew tired of hurting Shazam, and left to tend to other affairs. (Power of Shazam! v1 #10)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Blaze

Overview

Personality and attributes

Lady Blaze and her brother Lord Satanus in Reign in Hell v1 #6.

In appearance, Blaze was a red-skinned humanoid female demon, with flame-colored hair that cascaded wildly, horns protruding from her brow, and glowing eyes that burned with an infernal light. Her form was statuesque and imposing, a mixture of alluring beauty and monstrous dread, often adorned with flame-like garments or demonic ornamentation that emphasized her infernal origins. (Action Comics v1 #655)

Blaze’s personality was marked by sadistic pleasure in manipulating and corrupting mortals, deriving enjoyment from the suffering of others and the bending of their will. She was cunning, preferring to ensnare through temptation and deceit before resorting to brute force. At the same time, her arrogance and relish in displays of power revealed her pride as a demoness of high standing. Blaze thrived on confrontation, enjoying the contest of pitting her schemes and sorcery against her enemies, though her reliance on trickery showed that she valued manipulation as much as domination. This combination of cruelty, intelligence, and pride defined her earliest portrayal. (Action Comics v1 #655)

Blaze considered herself as being the ultimate deceiver. (Action Comics v1 #656)

Her biological father was the champion Vlarem who had taken the name of the wizard Shazam by the modern age. (Power of Shazam! v1 #10) She said that unlike her brother that she genuinely hated her father. This was because she believed that his taint had been an impediment in her attempt at being the sole ruler of the realm of Hades. (Power of Shazam! v1 #10)

Powers and abilities

A Lady of Hell in Secret Six v3 #33.

Blaze was a demon from Hell, and as such, she possessed formidable physical and mystical abilities. Her body was superhumanly durable, capable of withstanding Superman’s attacks, and she wielded immense physical strength beyond that of mortals. She commanded hellfire, conjuring it as blasts of flame, barriers, or engulfing infernos, and she could summon lesser demons to fight on her behalf. Her sorcery extended to creating illusions, binding souls, and drawing power from corruption. These feats placed her as a significant supernatural force, a being whose very presence in the mortal realm destabilized the balance between Earth and Hell. (Action Comics v1 #655) Time was said to have no meaning to a being such as herself. (Powers of Shazam! v1 #10)

Blaze could heal others, having healed Black Adam of his muteness from an injury. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #9)

Blaze's magic can obscure certain events from other beings with scying, mystical awareness, and precognative abilities; she was able to obscure Mary Marvel's whereabouts from the Wizard Shazam. (The Power of Shazam! v1 #2)
