League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a team of exceptionally talented outsiders organized by the British government in 1898 to deal with unusual threats to the Empire. Its members were Allan Quatermain, Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Hawley Griffin (the Invisible Man), Captain Nemo, and team leader and organizer Mina Murray.
The team first retrieved a sample of cavorite stolen by Fu Manchu, then defeated Moriarty's efforts to destroy Fu Manchu and dominate the English crime scene. They also played a crucial role in turning back the invasion of the Martians. However, the original team fell apart following the War of the Worlds, with Griffin turned traitor and killed by Hyde, Hyde slain by the Martians, and Nemo disgusted by the British use of germ warfare. Only Mina and Quatermain remained, who later organized a second League in the 1920s.
Other Teams
Similar teams were organized by Britain in other times, including an Elizabethan-era team led by Prospero and a late-18th/early-19th century team led by Lemuel Gulliver. A team was also organized in the 1950s, but no other details are known.
