History

Origin

The Legion of Doom were a team of supervillains that were gathered together by Brainwave. He brought them together in order to battle Extreme Justice. The team was defeated after Maxima used her mental powers on Brainwave.

Post-Flashpoint

After the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Lex Luthor was shown to had assembled his Legion of Doom after the Source Wall was ruptured during the crisis against the Dark Multiverse. (Justice League v4 #2)

After Black Manta departed the Legion of Doom, the team of supervillains began a recruitment drive in order to replace him. They required someone of equal stature as him to show that they were not losing the battle against the superheroes. The gathering was sabotaged when the Joker had Joker Toxin released into the central hall after feeling that Lex Luthor had betrayed their deal by freeing the Batman Who Laughs. A result of the spread of the gas caused the various supervillains to run amok as they turned on each other. The Joker then captured Luthor where he revealed that he had only joined Lex on this mission to ensure him and his compatriots failed as part of a grand cosmic joke. However, he then decided not to kill them as that would let them off easily and instead wanted them to suffer the consequences by working with the Batman Who Laughs after which the Joker departed the Legion. The new recruits decided to abandon joining the supervillain team where some believed this was a serious blow to their image. However, Luthor decided that they still had the upper hand and had Professor Ivo re-double his efforts in repairing Brainiac to be the Legion of Doom’s newest member. (Justice League v4 #13)

They attended the funeral of Deathstroke that was being held by the supervillain community where they sensed potential in Slade's son Jericho in being his successor. (Deathstroke v4 #44)

To claim final victory, Perpetua required the remaining fragments of the Totality scattered in the past and future. Thus, the Legion of Doom was dispatched to acquire them with the majority of the team journeying into the past to acquire it from the Justice Society of America whilst Brainiac sought to claim one from the Justice Legion A after having bottled various future timelines. (Justice League v4 #32)

Overview

It was said that part of the purpose of the organization was to strike fear into the hearts of superheroes. (Justice League v4 #13)

Notes

  • The Legion of Doom was an original creation created by Hanna-Barbera for the Super Friends cartoon.
  • In DC Nation v2 #5 (2018), writer Scott Snyder commented, "The Legion of Doom is dangerous because it's our deadliest villains working together in new ways, helping one another as a team like they never have before. For so long their goals have kept them in one another's way, but now, with their plans aligned, they're a threat the Justice League isn't ready to face."

Alternate Versions

  • In Old Lady Harley v1 #3 (2018), an alternate version of the Legion of Doom was shown to had operated in a post-apocalyptic future where they were said to had conquered Mexico.
  • In Future State: Justice League v1 #1 (2021), an alternate future version of the Legion of Doom appeared in the possible timeline of Future State. By the mid-21st century, they were led by T.O. Morrow and Professor Ivo where their numbers included Amaz-X, Cobalt Blue, Despera, The Flood, the Screech Owl and the UltraViolet Lantern where they battled the new Justice League that consisted of the children of their predecessors. To defeat them, the Legion orchestrated the release of the Hyperclan from the Phantom Zone but the White Martians ended up murdering them instead leading to their bodies being found by the Justice League.

Television

  • In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, the Legion of Doom made a number of appearances in the animated series. In the episode "Triumvirate of Terror!", the first story had them involved in a baseball match against the Justice League International where they lost the game.
  • In Legends of Tomorrow, the Legion of Doom made a number of appearances in the live-action television series set in the Arrowverse. This group consisted of the Reverse Flash, Malcolm Merlyn and Damien Darhk who went through time to find the Spear of Destiny to change reality.

Film

  • In Justice League: Doom, the Legion of Doom was assembled by Vandal Savage who assembled the group with the goal of eliminating the Justice League. Its members consisted of Cheetah, Star Sapphire, Bane, Metallo, Mirror Master, and Ma'alefa'ak who were all offered a large sum of money for their aid in eliminating the League members. This was with the goal of Savage causing a planetary disaster so that he could rule over the survivors.
  • In JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time, the Legion of Doom featured in the animated film where they consisted of Lex Luthor, Gorilla Grodd, Toyman, Captain Cold, Black Manta, Cheetah, Solomon Grundy, and Bizarro. They assembled under Luthor who intended to conquer the world by freezing the polar ice caps and create a global crisis only to be opposed by the Justice League who destroyed the majority of the freeze satellites in orbit. During the battle, the villains were defeated leading to Captain Cold overloading the orbital satellites that were freezing the Earth. This caused the satellite to explode with it expanding the freeze beam that froze Luthor in ice. After their defeat, the Legion of Doom escaped in their craft and it was believed Luthor was dead. In the 31st century, the remains of the Legion of Doom were kept in a history museum that celebrated the accomplishments of heroes such as Superman. Luthor was, however, not killed but frozen in ice till this time where he was accidently freed by Karate Kid and managed to gain the Eternity Glass that bond the Time Trapper to his service. With the Time Trapper, he returned with some of the returned Legion of Doom members who went back in time to send Superman's pod back into space to prevent him from being adopted by the Kents thus even preventing the formation of the Justice League. Dawnstar and Karate Kid created a paradox that brought the League back only to fight the freed Time Trapper. After the Time Trappers defeat, Gorilla Grodd decided to regroup the Legion of Doom after Luthor was sent to Blackgate prison in order for them to get their revenge.
  • In Justice League vs. Teen Titans, the Legion of Doom made a brief appearance in the animated film as antagonists that attacked the Justice League. Their ranks consisted of Lex Luthor, Cheetah, Toymaster, Solomon Grundy and Weather Wizard who were all defeated by the League.
