Mass Driver

A mass driver can launch objects (especially satellites) into orbit from a planetary surface, or past orbit into space. It is often designed just to put things into orbit as an alternative to using expensive chemical rockets.
Mass drivers may also be orbital weapons that fire large objects- usually asteroids- at targets on a planet.

Mass driver weapons were outlawed by every civilized government, but the Centauri Republic used them anyway to bomb Narn and force them to surrender.
