- 1884: Real World - In the United States, eight-hour workdays are first proclaimed by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions. May 1 thereafter becomes celebrated as "May Day."
- 1931: Real World - The Empire State Building in New York is completed.
- 1960: Real World - Soviets shoot down a U.S. U-2 spy plane and capture its pilot, Gary Powers.
- 2004: Real World - Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia all join the European Union.
- 2006: Real World - Opponents of a crackdown on illegal immigrants in the United States stage a nationwide boycott of schools and businesses to demonstrate the significance of illegals to the U.S. economy.
