Metcalf in the hospital.

Metcalf was a co-worker of Arthur's at Worldwide Fishladder and Sons. Like Arthur, Metcalf dreamed of being a superhero. According to Mr. Fishladder, Metcalf quit his job, cashed in his life savings, and bought a jetpack. Somehow or another he ended up in a horrible accident that left him unable to go to the bathroom without the aid of a machine. Metcalf's story was known as the 'Lesson of Metcalf,' and used by many as a warning against becoming a superhero.

As for Metcalf himself, Arthur visited him in the hospital following his and the Tick's first battle with the Terror. Surprisingly, Metcalf was cheerful, and determined to go right back to being a superhero as soon as he got out of the hospital, and his words inspired Arthur. Metcalf was briefly endangered when the Terror unplugged his machine, but Arthur saved him by plugging it back in in the nick of time.
