Biography

Lord Millennium.

Millennium Earl (Japanese: 千年伯爵, Hepburn: Sennen Hakushaku) was a male member of the Noah Family who were thirteen immortal beings that lived on the Earth.

Around 7000 years ago, he came to battle a foe who wielded the Heart of Innocence and lost their fight. This resulted in the Three Days of Darkness that proceeded to wipe out all of humanity. The only survivors were the twelve disciples that were the Noah who gathered together in the aftermath. They came to found the second generation of humanity who were their descendants leading to all mankind possessing the genes of the Noah family. Around this time, the Earl vanished from the world where he arrived at the Cornelia residence of the Campbell family. Whilst there, he met Katerina Eve Campbell when suddenly he disappeared once again and split into two infant children. These babies were adopted by Katerina as her own where she named them Nea D. Campbell and Mana D. Campbell. Raised as twin brothers, they grew to adulthood until they manifested their Noah powers and joined the family. After living their lives as brothers for seventeen years, Mana 'devoured' Nea in order to fulfil his role as the Earl of Millennium, and destroy the Heart of Innocence. Standing tearfully in front of a mirror, he cried out and clawed at it, while his complexion changed to that of a Noah. However, Mana's reflection within the mirror remained the same as before, weeping and constantly apologising for what he did. The Mana on the outside of the mirror violently clawed at his own face, and blamed the tearful reflection of Mana for everything that had happened, and proclaimed himself as The Earl of Millennium. The Earl declared that his identity as the Earl of Millennium was 'more than enough', and told Mana to disappear. With that, the reflection of Mana disappeared, leaving only the Earl, who then destroyed his own face.

Around 35 years ago, Nea D. Campbell who was the '14th Noah' killed all the Noah Family except for the Earl and Road Kamelot in an effort to become the new head of their clan. However, the attempt failed and Nea D. Campbell was defeated where the 14th Noah was devoured by his opponent who became the current Earl of the Millennium.

At some point, he appeared before the child Allen Walker who had recently lost his adoptive father Mana Walker. Similar to what he had done to others, the Earl offered to bring back to boy's father if he called out for his soul. Walker did so but the act imprisoned Mana within the body of an Akuma that the Millennium Earl ordered to kill Allen. During the attack, Allen Walker's arm manifested into an anti-Akuma weapon that took a life of its own and attacked the Akuma. At that moment, the Earl decided to depart the area whilst Allen Walker's arm destroyed the Akuma thus freeing the soul of his adoptive father Mana Walker.

He later met up with Tyki Mikk where the two had lunch with he rest of the Noah Family. During their meal, the Earl provided a list to Tyki on people he wanted eliminated.

Thus, he enacted a plan that intended to bring about the destruction of mankind.

Another of his schemes was getting the aid of human collaborators that helped create Akuma. These 'brokers' created situations whereby an individual lost a loved one whereupon they attempted to goad them into seeing the deceased and after agreeing they would call the Earl who create the Akuma. There were numerous individuals that performed the role of a broker with the Millennium Earl maintaining a network of telephone lines to contact them. Such a tactic effectively turned the site of the broker into a factory that mass produced Akuma. The Lord Millennium later called the Noah family together for a meeting where he assigned each an exorcist to kill as part of their offensive against the Black Order.

Tyki, Skinn Bolic, and Jasdevi meet the Earl aboard Noah's Ark in Edo, where he explained to the three of them the origins of the Noah; the Ark is the Noah's original birthplace, as well as being a manufacturing plant for Akuma. He also explains that he plans to part ways with the Ark and move to a different one, before turning to ask the three why they are not out doing their jobs. It is then he finds out that two Generals have infiltrated Edo. Concerned about General Cross' presence in Edo in particular, the Earl sends out signal to all Akuma in Japan and orders them to attack the Generals. He also demands the Noah go to do their assigned jobs. The Earl watched as the battle rages on between the Exorcists, Noah and Akuma. However, when Kanda and his comrades make their appearance, and it seems like the tables are turning in the Exorcists' favour, the Earl levels the entirety of Edo. As he looks down at the badly injured Exorcists, he notices Lenalee, whose Innocence had formed a shield to protect her. This raises the possibility she has the 'Heart', and with this, the Earl casually floats down to her crystallized shield of Innocence and prepares to kill her. However, at that moment, Allen returns and saves Lenalee. The Earl enters battle with Allen, and notes that Allen's Innocence bears a resemblance to a white-face clown, before retreating back to the Ark, carrying Tyki and Skinn with him. When Lero pulls Lenalee, Allen, Lavi, Kanda, Krory, and Chaozii into Noah's Ark, the group try to find an exit before the Ark disappears. Kanda ends up fighting Skinn, and Krory fights Jasdevi, allowing the rest of the group to head onwards until they encounter Tyki and Road. Allen attempts to exorcise the Noah within Tyki, which instead causes him to fully awaken. As Allen and Lavi fight a seemingly losing battle against Tyki, Cross arrives just in time to save them. Before Cross could injure Tyki any further, the Earl arrives at the old, crumbling Ark to save him.[38] Cross tells the Earl that, thanks to the Fourteenth, the Ark can no longer move from Edo. Not only this, but the Fourteenth had passed on his role as "The Musician" to someone else. With his back turned, the Earl tells them they are too late, as the heart of the Ark has already been transferred to the new one; even "The Musician" would be powerless to control the old Ark. At that moment, Allen attacks the Earl. Amused, the Earl suggests that Allen's sword is actually his, and also notes the hatred in Allen's eyes. However, Cross stops Allen's attack, allowing the Earl to escape. As he takes his leave, the Earl expresses happiness that Tyki has finally awakened, and then bids the Exorcists farewell. As soon as Earl returns to the new Ark, he starts playing its piano in order to complete its programming. The Earl is ecstatic when he finishes the transfer from the old Ark to the new one, but Lulu Bell notices he is crying, although the Earl denied it.

The Earl is greatly angered that the transfer from the old Ark to the new was incomplete thanks to the Fourteenth. As a result, 80% of the Akuma Egg was lost. He sends Lulu Bell, equipped with an army of Akuma, to steal back his Akuma Egg from the Black Order. Some time later, the Earl attends a ball hosted by Sheril Kamelot, but this time he is in his human form. While there, he asks himself why he did not kill Allen when he had the chance, and wonders if it was simply fate. Afterwards, the Earl leaves and buys a flower from a little girl, leaving Tyki to muse that he really does not seem so evil in his human form. The Earl was present during the reincarnation of Wisely where he explained the circumstances of the family's death due to the betrayal of the Fourteenth. However, Road reveals that she is the only one who has not reincarnated since thirty-five years ago.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Close-up of the Earl's face.

As the Earl, he took on a grotesque caricature of a Victorian gentleman with a rotund figure in cape and top hat whilst possessing a perpetual enormous grin and pince-nez spectacles. He has a large, almost cartoonish, rotund figure, easily towering over everyone else. It was later revealed that his true appearance was that of a younger man with greyish brown skin and long dark hair. To the public, he was known as The Earl of Millennium (千年伯爵, Sennen Hakushaku) and to his fellow Noah he was called Lord Millennium (千年公 , Sennen kō).

Despite the Earl's evil intentions for the destruction of humanity and constant trickery into creating Akuma, the Earl always seems to act as a cheerful, friendly and carefree character, almost like a friendly old uncle. Allen Walker notes that the Earl always acts like he is playing the fool and a huge grin seems to be permanently fixed upon the Millennium Earl's face, with a speech pattern unfitting for the ultimate evil in that he always speaks in a cute, loving manner with him being rather eccentric.

He claimed that he was not evil for creating Akuma as he was not solely responsible for their emergence. Instead, he attributed blame on humans as it was the darkness within their souls that brought about the Akuma's creation. As such, he reasoned that all he did was simply provide a service of bringing them into formation.

The Earl was shown to hold nothing but contempt towards God and called the deity a detestable figure.

To grieving humans, he tended to appear as a sympathetic figure that offered a way for the individual to bring back their lost loved ones. He claimed that God was a despicable being and showed a means for the human to bring back the dead. This involved presenting a mechanical skeletal creation that he stated would bring the person back to life by calling the soul of the deceased into it. Once done, he revealed his true nature as the skeletal creation was an Akuma that he ordered to kill the person that called its soul after which he had the living machine wear its skin to blend as a human. It was only then that he claimed that the Akuma was complete.

On Allen Walker, he remembered the child that had grown up and commented that he should have killed him all those years ago when he had the chance.

After learning that Allen Walker was the reincarnation of Nea Walker, the 14th Noah, the Earl has asked him to join the Noah Family despite Nea attempting to kill 35 years prior and Allen Walker being an Exorcist, showing a forgiving side, yet at the same time he seems to hold a deep and intense hatred towards Mana Walker, refusing to ever forgive him for his actions. He is also shown to be affectionate to the point of obsession towards certain people, namely Nea. The other Noah even go so far as to call him "love struck" and he claims to want to be by his side, chasing Nea down to the ends of the Earth. This obsession is the catalyst for the entire Alma Karma arc, the objective being to obtain Nea so he can continue to be with him. Eventually this leads to his run in with Allen in the Search for Allen Walker arc, being so incredibly overwhelmed by emotion and sorrow he breaks down crying in his arms after almost killing him, only because Nea chose to acknowledge his existence and offer the slightest hint of kindness. This bipolarity continues later on continuing to switch between worrying greatly and crying over Nea to actively trying to absorb him into his very being by "devouring" him after being betrayed.

One of his goals was to find the Heart of the Innocence that powered all such substances around the world and whose destruction could bring about the destruction of the Innocence.

Powers and abilities

The Millennium Earl was born of the immortal Noah Family and thus possessed various superhuman traits common with them. The Earl has several abilities that are natural to him, both by his station as the Earl and by his status as a member of the Noah Family. Like all other Noah, the Earl's abilities are based on Dark Matter. As a Noah, he was immune to the Akuma Blood Virus, which was normally fatal for all living things. Furthermore, he had the ability to heal from all injuries sustained to him though the limits of this were unknown. Like all Noah, he was able to destroy Innocence with his bare hands.

It was shown that he was capable of reading the minds of others and projecting his thoughts into their heads. Part of this also allowed him to feel the grief of the people all over the globe. The Earl can feel the grief of the people all over the globe. This was how he was seemingly working so steadily, almost instantly appearing next to people who lost a loved one. In the past, Allen described the Earl as one who devoured the human soul. The Earl does this by extending bladed tendrils from his fingers which dissolve anyone who was pierced by them whereupon the remains were then absorbed into the Earl.

The Earl's most recognizable form was actually a costume that he created with his magic. The Earl had a great deal of control over this costume, as it had been shown only half covering the Earl's face as well as expanding enough to fill an alleyway. He could summon it and make it disappear at will. Despite his physical appearance, he was shown to possess immense physical capabilities and able to fight skilled exorcists. He can receive bullets directly in the face and get away with mere scratches. Using Lero, the Earl can form a great broadsword to use for close combat, though he has shown he did not necessarily need Lero to summon the sword.

Though having a physical body, he was highly durable with the Earl capable of taking bullets directly in the face and getting away with mere scratches. It was shown that he was able to heal from scratches in a few seconds.

He was able to teleport from one area to another allowing him to quickly appear before grieving humans or escape the battlefield.

As a Noah, he had the ability to control Dark Matter and use it to achieve various feats. He could use this power offensively whereby he could fire massive explosives or spheres of such energy. It was demonstrated that with just a single blast of Dark Matter he was able to level all of Edo.

The Earl had the power to destroy Innocence where he crushed it in his hands and left it as dust.

According to the Skulls, the Earl was said to be a powerful sorcerer.

He was accompanied by a golem named Lero (レロ, Rero) who took the form of a pink umbrella with a small, talking jack-o-lantern at its tip.

As the head of the Noah Family, the Earl has absolute command over all the Akuma and the other members of the Noah Family. Unlike other members of the Noah Family, only the Earl can create Akuma, something he does by using their surviving and grieving loved ones to summon their souls back from Heaven before binding them to Dark Matter skeletons. Being their creator, the Akuma are his hands, feet, and eyes, and as such, can observe the world through them, as seen when the Fourteenth used a Level 4 to announce his awakening to the Earl. Through this connection, the Earl is able to summon hundreds of Akuma at a moment's notice, and can also mentally compel them to do his bidding.
