Biography

Origin

Nebiros was a 10,000-year-old demon who escaped from Hell through sacrificial offerings. Nebiros' empire grew and threatened other great powers of the day like Lemuria, Mu, and Atlantis. The great sorcerers of Earth banded together to destroy Nebiros, and banished him to a dark dimension.

Father Jonathon Bliss’ congregation left him, and he went mad when he could not force them to behave as he believed good Christians should. He entered the world of black magic, and summoned up Nebiros, who promised to start a war that would bring about Armageddon and force people to turn to god for help. Bliss believed god would surely return to save his people, but Nebiros knew he was playing Bliss for a fool. Nebiros’ otherworldly form had to be stored in a transcendental globe pending a suitable host to inhabit. Bliss befriended Swamp Thing, and lured him into a false sense of security, and then performed a spell that let Nebiros inhabit his body. Nebiros, in Swamp Thing’s form, captured Swamp Thing’s friends Abby Arcane, Matt Cable and Luke, and ripped out Luke’s soul for fun. Matt made Bliss see the error of his ways in playing god, and Bliss tried to exorcize Nebiros, but the demon was too powerful. Matt escaped his bonds and destroyed the transcendental sphere, casting Nebiros from Swamp Thing’s body. Nebiros and Swamp Thing fought, but Nebiros’ otherworldly form could not sustain itself on the earthly plane without a host. Bliss offered himself up, but he was too weak a vessel, and was incinerated. Bliss knew full well what he was doing, and Nebiros’ consciousness was scattered across the universe. (Swamp Thing v1 #15)

Around 6,000 years later, Nebiros came to possess the body of the Swamp Thing with the aid of the deluded priest Jonathan Bliss. When Abigail Arcane and Matthew Cable destroy his globe vessel, Nebiros was exorcised from the Swamp Thing's body and takes over the priest's body, which withers under the power of the demon, sending him back to the Netherworld.

The explosion of the Tower of Fate caused a dimensional rift. In this time, Nebiros was seen battling Nekron the Lord of the Unliving for control of this opening, but neither achieved their objectives. (Fate v1 #12)

The combined efforts of Etrigan the Demon and Asmodel had caused the Spectre to merge with the fallen angel Asmodel. As one of the side effects, the fires of Hell had gone out, Hell had frozen over and all the demons had invaded Earth-all except Nebiros. He stays behind in the City of Dis, armed with what he claims to be the trident of the King of Lies himself. A small team of heroes ventures into Dis in order to restart the fires. Sebastian Faust is part of the team. Faust has gained powers from Nebiros himself in a deal gone wrong, powers intended for his father, Felix Faust.

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Nebiros

Long, long ago, the demon named Etrigan cut off the skin of the demon Nebiros. His skin ended up in the hands of the Cassidy family, who protected the world from evil by sucking the belief out of dangerous artifacts. Liam Cassidy, the grandfather of Daniel Cassidy also known as the Blue Devil, had this legacy passed to him, and to cheapen the artifacts, he made silly horror movies with them so that people would laugh at them. Nebiros himself ended up trapped in one, a golden chalice that was used in the movie The Demon Chalice, where to work, the chalice needed blood. Tobias Whale got a hold of it, and exposed it to the blood of one of his men. When he did, Nebiros was set free. He teamed up with Whale to capture the Blue Devil and Black Lightning, since he discovered that the Blue Devil Suit is actually his long lost skin, and also because he was promised an endless supply of souls. He and Whale spreaded a new drug to the streets, a drug that sucked the soul of the one who took it and brought it straight to Nebiros. He was eventually trapped in Tobias Whale's body by the Blue Devil and Whale went into a coma. (DC Universe Presents v1 #16)
